Games Under WinXP
I know that I've personally had to deal with Slave Zero not working under WinXP, so there must be others with similar situations.
Has anyone else encountered games which did not run under WinXP and had no official patches or updates to correct the problem?
...and does anyone have a brilliant ideas on how to go around it?

Well..I play Final Fantasy 7 in XP...after a while the textures become garbled. This is a sign that the computer is feeding bad data into the video memory(or other memory where the texture is stored). If this happens there isn't much you can do. I just restart and its good for a while longer.

i havent had any problems with any games so far.

Worst one I've seen so far is with Operation Flashpoint played multiplayer over LAN. If you have machines running both XP and 98, the OS type not running the server will dump out of the game after a period of time. It's very frustrating if you've laid heaps of mines, taken out 5 Tanks and are sitting in a nice sniper location(SVD Dragonov rocks) waiting for the enemy troops to arrive and the game suddenly quits.
I don't use Windows XP because dual boot 98SE and Win2k works perfectly for me.

I havn't had any issues with the entire line of "The Sims". I also have been able to run an old game "Dune 2000". Though it was a bit tricky, as I had to pretty much cripple my video card. :) I've also had great success with Diablo II.
I don't use my computer for gameing too much, though, so I'm probably not too much help here.

And speaking of Sims under XP. The only problem I've had with Sims and actually Madden 2002 from time to time, is the sound echoing upon launching the game. The fix seems to be [alt]+[tab] to go to Windows, and then [alt]+[tab] again to get back into the game. Echo goes away. Weird, but I've learned to deal with it. Also, Need for Speed doesn't seem to be compatible.

hey i really miss that game warcraft 2, its was a dos based game back in its time.
i tried to install it when i had win2k, my sound card wasnt detected so i got no sound and my mouse would only work on the upper half of the screen.i just updates but no luck , updates do nothing
my guess was it was dos based. now i have winXP pro.
i would really like to play that game again. im sure if i install it on my xp it would most likely do the same. would you guys know of a way to make i work or do they sell updated copies at the store?
i have warcraft2 when it first came out

I had a tough enough time getting WarCraft to work under Win98SE. It really should be run in DOS mode natively without Windows at all.

Thats funny. I am having no trouble running warcraft 2 in XP. No sound yet. But I hear about some dos sound emulators for XP are coming out soon.
-

i really want to play it, im going to try install it now and see if i can get it to work
-
HOLY SHIZZZNAZZZ i just installed warcraft 2 on winXP
and the dam game works and i got all the sound.
the only problem is the sound is choppy. i dont think i updated my sound card drivers im going to update them now and see if that helps it

well warcraft 2 works on xp, only three problems. when you move the mouse to scroll around the map it moves really fast. i set scroll to the lowest and it still moves fast.
also sound is choppy, my sound card drivers are up to date.
i get no music sound :(
warcraft 2 has some pretty good sounds i think. i'll try some things maybe i can get the music to work .
but so far its only these three problems i experience running warcraft 2 on xp pro

I love it when you keep clicking on a person or boat in the game. They start either get PO'ed or say something stupid. I may have to dig up my copy to play now.

I know Resident Evil 3 doesn't work with WinXP. It gets past the fmv's and then freezes.

I had need for speed hot 3 running fine on my cusl2 with the integrated graphics. it stopped working when I upgraded to my geforce 256. it's a tough sacrifice :( , but halflife does run a lot better so it's worth it. ;)

I tried NHL 2000, it doesnt work and no help out there from EA either(yes Im aware its an old game) Guess Im off to get 2002 now. Of course the one with Super Mario on the cover, they can keep Scott Stevens :D :D

The only game that I can think of that I haven't been able to get working in WinXP yet is TIE Fighter (X-Wing collectors W95 version). Depending on what compatability mode I try running it in, it errors entering the game either wanting me to install DirectX or it doesn't recognize my Sidewinder3dPro joystick.
I haven't messed with many DOS games yet though with XP. FIgured when I have the room to set up a second computer, I'd install them on it as I think my P4-1.7GHz would be a bit speedy for them :D

My brother got his copy for ~15 bucks at Media Play.
As far as sound goes, I thought the music came off the audio CD? If you are using midi and have a Live! card or the likes, try setting the midi and warcraft's setup to General MIDI or roland (I think).
As far as choppy sound goes, I don't think there is much that can be done, might be the sound card, I have many of those issues with my Live! Value card.
To get FM synth, or to correct some DOS programs, might I suggest VDMSound It might help.

I can't install Fleet Command under XP Pro. It brings up "Not a valid Win32 application" after double clicking setup.
However I run these with no problems
