LAN Party, anyone?
I've set up only 1 so far (Q3, if you really must ask  ), shortly after 9-11.
We had a blast shooting up bots with "terrorist" skins :p
A friend of mine has also invited me over to his monthly LAN parties (Ghost REcon these days) and I'll joint them next time.
Have you ever participated/hosted a LAN party?
What are your impressions?
-
I've never found any in the area, I searched in Google even :(
I'd love to go to one, they sound like fun.
-
i was invited but didnt go,
i would really like to go to one, i heard you play video games all night and get hammered ;)
-
Not that I wouldnt want to go to a LAN party.
But I would rather host one cause I wanna wear the PJs and be totally comfortable. You know using someones bathroom and all that stuff. :D
-
It has been a thought of mine for a while now, never been to one, but I would like to host one in my area. My biggest drawback is whether or not it will go smoothly....

I just set the date for my second one that I've hosted. Gonna be May 25th, if anyone around Central PA is interested, you are more than welcome.
Last one I had about 50 people here and I'm shooting for more this time around. :D
-
A couple friends of mine and I used to do that on a monthly basis.
We would never know what we were going to play until after we were all set up.
The favorites were:
Baulder's Gate
Starcraft
Doom
Carmageddon 2

Been to one lan party. I think that bad thing is bringing in the monitor...
It was my first time playing quake3 and I smooked them ahha
150-10 in an hour hehe we had some super heros mod on... was very ez with it, if you picked the right super powers (which I did)
but with everyone having broad band theres no need for lan parties anymore for me. We will just do WAN parties :)
-
Been to several. They are a blast! My college computer club negotiated bi-weekly use of the computer labs on friday nights. 40 systems in place, high speed switched network, and we all pretty much loaded the software to play in class. But since it's at the college, we really can't pull all-nighters.
There's also a group here called PCGS, what it stands for I have no idea. The guy that runs it is a network admin for the local PUD. Every month he grabs the PUD auditorium, about the size of two basketball courts, sets up tables and drops 10/100 switches all over the room. You bring your system and hook up. I think the last time I went there was about two hundred people in the room with five different massive LAN games going. Now that was intense! :D
It's always fun to snipe somebody and hear a voice scream across the room..."Who the f*** keeps doing that!!!" *snicker, snicker* :p
-
For those of you who host or used to host...do you charge?? What do you charge??
-
I would politely ask people to donate money to help supply new hardware. Cable, switches, *cough* GeForce4 *cough, cough* :D
-
You know what I was telling Taz.. Im surprise that they havent come out with something yet to make travel to a LAN party easy.. I mean the moving the monitor and case and all.
I have a huge suitcase I thought that might do it. But I think something similar to a suitcase stroller would be neat but geared for the gamers.
-
I charged $5 at the door for the last one and I think I lost money. I provided soda, pizza, and prizes for the three official tournaments.
This time around I'm gonna either have to charge $10 at the door, or not do prizes. I haven't yet decided.

A friend of mine sent me a link to a LAN party that is sponsored . 30$ CAN (~45$ US) for entering, 50 players maximum, food provided (4 meals), 18 hours of fragging, XBox to the overall best player and cash prizes to other qualifiers.
Maybe that will give you some ideas, Milenko. ;)
If you do host another one, will the Q3 server be open to the Internet as well? I think you tried to do something like that last time, no?
-
Im hoping to have one within the next 3-4 weeks.
I have several problems though. While getting some switches & networking gear together is easy (ooops.. there appears to be an empty space in my rack, where that Cisco 3000 series used to be..) but my house is just a bloody awful location. Got a big dog, and my other half doesnt like having heaps of PC's around the place.
Might have to find somewhere that will host us for a minimal fee (hell, we would only want a big-a$$ room, and power) and charge people $10-$20 (AU currency) to attend..
The last few we did, had 12-14 people attending, friends and work mates, and we all chipped in for pizza and drinks.
-
I have a small lan party at my house every tuesday night while my wife is at night class. Usually have about 5 or 6 people, but that's enough to have some descent gaming. I love having it at my house so I don't have to lug my stuff around!
-
Hold LAN parties quite often. Absolute blast. Even broadband gaming doesn't match up to fragging people who are in the same room as you. An average ping of 10 is pretty nice as well.
As for pointers:
Know how many comps are coming and plan out a good layour for them.
Have enough power. 4 comps and monitors running off one powerstrip is bad.
Have enough A/C. Lotsa comps = lotsa heat.
Pizza and subways/hoagies have always worked best as food. Both make excellent breakfasts.
Anything with lots of caffiene is a plus.
Admission is good to pay for the food/drinks. Relying on people to bring their own doesn't work.
Have an area for people to do something besides game. Sleep, watch movies, hell, at my last party, I had an NES running Duckhunt all night.
Have fun.
-
After reading all this, I really want to go to one of these...
LanParty.com says there's one in Danbury, I should try to go there sometime.
-
We used to get a case of beer and play at work after hours. Everyone had small apartments at the time. It was cool.

Why not have a WAN party? I mean with broadband (384K+(bare minimum) line speed) it seems highly doable. Yeah you don't have people sitting right next to you, but the game play should still be the same right? And actually, with IM capablilities, everyone can "virutally" be in the same room.

Thats what we do every night on Q3. :D
But with a WAP party, you can't easily talk to the other people. In a Lan party, you can all get pizza, chinese, chat (ya know, talk using your mouth) etc..
I think its more personal as a lan party, but that might just be me...

WAN would be fine if all you wanted was to game, but part, if not most, of the fun is in everyone being in close proximity. Besides, you think teamplay games are a blast now, wait until you can realtime orders to people, but you have to do it in code to confuse the other team.
excerpt from recent team DM at Lan
jaeger: ok, everybody meet up at point yellow.
((0)): WTF is point yellow? the railgun?
jaeger: dammit, people meet up at the frickin quad damage.

Hey everyone should first check out www.lanparty.com they have a huge list of lanparty's all around the world. Second if any of you are in the Eau Claire, WI area, come to my lan party on 4/20/02 @ www.northwoodspc.com Me and a friend are hosting it.

I host several large LAN Parties every year New Years is always a big one. Then Memorial day, 4th of July, Labor Day. This year I am trying to have one everyother week if I can get enough players to show. I do not charge admission to my LAN's, but everyone throws in for pizza and snacks.
Only a few rules:
There will be no fist fights. Everyone gets angry, deal with it.
NO ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES in my home. I don't care what you smoke, snort swallow or shoot up, but you will not do it in my home.
Drink as much Alcohol as you like, but you ain't driving anywhere afterwards.
I get first dibs on porn sharing. :D :D :D :D

Do you guys have any good ideas for prizes that could be given out at a big lan party?
-
I go to 1 or 2 lan parties every month. Utah may suck for drinking and partying normally (it really really does) but they know how to make lots of kick *** lans. Im thinking about going to the millionmanlan next year. Can't go this year, as I have to move to Virginia over the summer. :(

- Games (PC, XBox, PS2, etc.)
- Graphics card
- Sound card
- Processors (with or w/o motherboard)
- CD-Burner
What's your price range?
Knowing how much you're ready to spend would give you a better idea on what to get for various prizes (1st, 2nd, 3rd place, Most suicides, etc.) :p
