Rant.....Helluva scarey afternoon
I was in the supermarket earlier this afternoon getting some stuff for our evening meal tonight. When I saw a small kid around 5 years old further up the isle fall over and hit the floor. Right away she started having a convulsion.
Part of my job is to provide emergency 1st aid for the office area and factory I work at. The training was quit in depth from dealing with a nose bleed throught to using a defibulator to restart a heart. Up until now the only 1st aid I had to provide was a sticky plaster on a paper cut
I drop what I have and run over and start to check the child out. By the time I run over the convulsion had stopped but the child was unconscious but breathing OK. I asked a member of staff to call 999, And checked the kid over doing a quick head to toe check. The ony obvious thing I could find was a small bump on the side of her head. The childs mother was REALLY worried and upset [What parent wouldn't be] but I managed to get some info out of her before things got really bad. Turns out the kid hadnt had a fever or and sickness and was fine right up to her passing out, She didnt know about the bump on the head. During this time I was making sure her airway was OK and monitoring her heartbeat when she stopped breathing and turned blue, Mum noticed this and screamed. At this point all my attention turned to the kid, I rechecked her airway -it was clear I then turned her on her side to see if she would breath, She didnt. It was then decided to start mouth to mouth.
During this time I was helping the child breath the parent was screaming her head off. I really felt for this woman all through this. I tried my best to reasure her but some IDIOT that was watching spoke out loud and said "I know 1st aid that kid is a gone", This didnt help matters with the parent at all and it only caused her to push me out the way to hold her kid. I explained what I was doing and what I know about childhood convulsions [Not a lot apart from what was taught during my courses].
I told her that I was wanting to help her child and to trust me [In truth I was as scared as the mother and was wanting to leave]. This calmed her down and about another 30 secs of breathing later she was breathing on her own and opened her eyes.
She was confused and looked very scared. I asked mum to come closer and talk to her. At this point the paramedics came in and took over I told them what happened the lenght of the convulsion, heart rate, the small bump on the head I found and the length of time she had stopped breathing as well as what I dont. Paramedics thanked me and took over. I decided deal with the second patient the mother and tried to reassure her and explain what they were doing. Rant on /WHY THE HELL COULDNT ONE OF THE 7 PEOPLE WHO WERE WATCHING DO THE SAME WHEN I WAS WORKING ON THE KID????? Rant off /
I walked her to the ambulance with her kid and the paramedics, The kid was a lot more responsive and was talking to them. The mother had calmed down enough to thank me for helping but I could still see she still really upset.
I in no way blame the parent for acting the way she did, I do not think anyone would be any different I know I wouldnt be. But I am pissed off about the idoiot with the alleged 1st aid expericance telling her there a good chance the kids was dead. I went looking for him after the ambulance was away but he had left the store.   Pity I had a few things to say to him - A$$HOLE
Must admit I've never been so scared in my life during the 15 mins in that store
Cheers

PS
Paramedics said she should be OK. They were going to take her into the hospital for some tests to make sure everything is OK, but said kids can stop breating in some cases after a convulsion.
Still I hope everything is OK for the kid. My thoughts are with her and her parents
