ATX manual on
Greetings all!
I have determined that my systme is short on wattage, and being to cheap to buy antoher PS when i hae a good one here, im gona try to make the second one run all my fans and system coolers (for the time being) but i need to know how to make it turn on with out a motherboard soft on.
-
I do not think it will solve your problem, all the Fans consumes something about 10 Watts total, and all from the same +12V channel ... :rolleyes:
Why do you think what PSU is your PC's bottleneck?
What PC and what PSU model, by the way?
-
200W
3 HDD
2 CDROM
P3 600
Radeon 7500
lots of cooling
detection of raid array seems speratic

How Big is your second Power Supply?
If it is bigger than your current(pun intended) one use it.
-
Rejectionman, thanks for listing your items. However, Ruslan is asking more for what kind of computer you have like a namebrand (ibm, compaq, hp) or custom built clone system.
He was also asking for what brand of power supply is in the case like Enermax, Startech, Antech, etc.
It would say on a sticker labeled on the power supply itself.
However, 200 watts is small for powering all your equipment and for future upgrades.
You will want to upgrade it to 300 watt or higher.

branded system (seanix)
came with P3- 600 Burner and CR-ROM, 8 GB HDD and crap video card powered by 200 W(hipro) (3 years old)
has since been upgraded to include
80 GB on promice ATA 100 controller
8 GB
Radeon 7500
3 system coolers
1 HDD cooler
1 AGP chipset cooler
1 AGP Port Exaust fan
no over clocking
System now speraticaly detects the 2 8GB Hdd on the sencond channel of the Promise card
system usaualy gets 1 of the 8 GB hdd, but they are striped together
raryly gets both 8 GB hdds:sad:
if I drop one of the CD-Roms the drive are detected more reliabley. (like always)
if i reseat the HDD concectors on the 2 8GB dirves they work for about a day then go away again:confused:
so being to cheap to buy a better powersupplie (400W) im trying to hot wire a old ATX Dell PS (140W works) to run the fans, and maby some of the hardware (a bit shady here, as if theire a voltage, or frequency descrpency it will likey blow something becasue of diffrente power sources)
-
May be it's just only flaky harddrive of Promice controller? :confused: did you try to use another an IDE cables?
I would check +5V and +12V channel's voltages of the PSU... We've had an Athlon 900 systems working fine with just only 200W PSUs (but good ones)... :confused:
-
12 V is running 11.3 V 5 is 5
New Rounded cables... work fine near as i can tell
Controller lay out
Promise1 -> 80 GB (primary boot)
Promise2 -> 8GB / 8 GB (raid 0 array... ether one is not detected)
onboard1 -> CD-ROM
onboard2 -> CR-RW
-
11,3 V ? - it's too low...should be at least 11,5V... it could be your problem... :confused:
If it was my PSU, I would definately have replaced some of components inside ... :D
-
Wasn't thtat the subject of the thread? im to cheap to do it. the voltage returns to normal with nothing but the systemboard on it.. I have 3 xtra 140 W ATX power supplies I want to hot wire one of them to make my PC dual Powered and solve the problem.
( I have since reworked everything inside the case, and have it all going again, but it will probaly come back...)
-
I wouldn't try this myself as it looks a bit risky but here is how to go about it http://www.burningissues.net/how_to/power/psu.htm
if possible test it on another mboard before connecting it to yours.
good luck!

Right ON some one actualy rad my orgianl post and answered the question you rock!

tahnks for hte help all... but dell dose it different...
the gray wire and any black one wit ha load will turn it on
-
i knew i forgot something,
Dell = Atx proprietary pinout.
-
All the best to ya, Let us know how it works, It could be that your Hipro is going bad and supplying bad current
I think I have a hipro AT psu laying around that I usse for testing
If it were my system I would get me a nice enermanx 350 watt ( Which is what I have to run my three optical drives, two 60 gig maxtors on my promise controller, My p4 runs cool enough but I have a fan on those hard drives
I hope your idea works :eek2:
-
so far so good.. they both start up when i press the button...
Hipro is now reporting 11.98 V for the 12 so it back where it should be.
if it carps out though im gona get a enermax 450
thanks all

I read the article on setting up the dual PSUs , looks interesting but it would not fit my box, It looks like your running the PSUs in parallel
Who knows maybe some bright person will mass produce that ATX extension cable , Just like you can buy some cool rounded ide cables now :)
