Ghosting? XP ?

OK Guys,, Im Stupid LOL Please, If Anyone Has An Idea As To If This Works Or Not,, And OR How To Please Feel Free To Jump In Here.

I Just Bought a new 40 gig hard drive To Replace A smaller 16 gig ibm drive, And I Thought It Was Possible To Ghost My Current Drive To The New One,To Save Time Installing A lot Of Programs And Files.
In Ghosts Instructions Is SAYS I Can Ghost To Drives Equal To Or Larger Than The Original.
SO,I Installed Ghost 7.0, Created A Bootable Floppy With Ghost.
And Booted The System Up From The Floppy.
Selected My Old Drive As Source
My New Drive As Destination
Proceed With Load "Yes"
10 minutes later,, Ghost Says Clone "Successful".
I Exit Program,Remove The OLD Hard Drive,Proceed To Boot from new Drive only to get the following message.

Windows could not start because of the following problem:
Did not generate ARC name for HAL and system paths.

Please check windows documentation about ARC configuration options and your hardware refferance manual for additional information.

I Tried This 2 Times With The Same Results.
1st try Old Drive Master, New Drive Slave
2nd try Old Drive Primary Master New Drive Secondary Slave.

Or Am I Going About This Incorrectly?? Should I Make An Image File,, Then Load From The Image Instead Of Direct Cloneing?

At the very least there is a new device in the computer. This will have to be detected and installed by WinXP.

HAL is the Hardware Abstraction Layer and refers to the makeup of the hardware on the system. By using a new, different HDD, the HAL has fundamentally changed.

It IS possible to ghost an existing XP installation and place it on a new HDD, but ALL hardware specific information has to be wiped beforehand. When you do this the Microsoft Way, you must install on hardware that is EXACTLY the same as the hardware you will deploy the images onto.

You should, perhaps, use SysPrep.

I've also heard rumblings that Ghost doesn't support NTFS, but I'm not sure how true this is.

Here's what I'd try, honestly.

1. Boot on your old HDD.

2. In Device Manager, remove the HDD specific device driver.

3. Shut down. Use DRIVE COPY from Power Quest to copy the contents from the old to the new HDD.

4. Boot onto new HDD.

This might work, but I've not tried it. I'm sure someone else has a better idea.

Yes Norton Ghost Does Work With NTFS Files,, But,, Apparently,, This Isnt As Easy As I Thought :mad:

Hmmm I'll Try It,, But Tell Me This,, Remove The Hard Old Hard Drive In Device Manager?
Will This Cause It To NOT Boot from the old drive If This Doesnt Work?
Wont It Think That The old Hard Drive Is A New One When I Try To Reboot From It,, If The Ghosting Fails again?

I Tried To Just Install XP pro From My New CD {bought bout 2 months ago} And I Keep Getting Blue Screened And Shut Down Before It Even Formats.
Yet It Installed Fine On My Old Original Drive,,, Go Figure

Once I had to copy hd to another and used Drive Image 2002 or Partition Magic, anyways it was a painful move...really painful. I got it done though, forget how and don't really want to do it again. Have fun!:D

No, you will be able to boot from the old hard drive without incident. Hard drives, boot sectors, etc., and how a computer and OS access such are all standard implementations, not specific to one particular OS or another.

What will happen is the system will boot on the old hard drive, detect a "new device," then install a driver for it.

Welp,,, It Sounded Good, But Sadly It Didnt Work.
Same Error On Loading From New Drive..
Maybe This Is A Job Better Left To The Great PC Gods In The Sky..
Think I Should Start A New Thread, Pertaining To WHY I Successfully Loaded This System On This PC With The Old Drive,, Yet It Refuses To Load On A New Drive FROM Same CD.

Try it.

What are specific models of the HDD's? Are they different UDMA (33 vrs 66)? Do you have the 80 pin HD cable?

You might also try fdisking the new drive even though ghost does this you could do a partition to partion copy and see if that works.

both set as master as well as the ibm
Also Tried Various Combos Of Master And Slave Setups,, In Every Case,, Cloned Successfully,, But Wont Boot To New Drive.
After Conciderable Reading Online Today At Other Sites As Well As My Favorite ( WINDRIVERS)
I Think Its Not Going To Work No Matter What I Try..
On Another Note.. When I Did Finally Decide To Give Up.
I Tryd Repeatedly To Just Do A Fresh Install From CD..
It Appears I Have Other Problems As Well.
Now If I Could Just Get The Same Error Message MORE Than Once~!

Was the image a partition image or the whole drive?

I have always had problems with entire drive images, but very very few with partition images, even when there is only one partition on the drive.

When you restore the partition image you can either tell ghost the size of the new partition - pre-partition for success, or expand the size to fill the drive.

From the sounds of things this is about how your original image was created.

If you are using Ghost - Excellent Software - then there are specific keys/ switches you have to use in order for the NTFS to copy correctly

try loading ghost by typing

ghost -ntic -ntil

I use this switches as a default

you can included -ntiid

this works for me everytime... even with 5.0

havent read everyones post so if someone already said this sorry..


after you ghost it, all you files are on the drive, whats the problem? so what if it didnt boot why not just reinstall windows over the drive?

I do this all the time at work going from one system to another. or hard drive to hard drive.

win 2k and winxp have two types of repairs, Dont use the repair that comes up first..

then hit r for repair :)

Was the orginal drive formated with NTFS or Fat32? There is a 32GB limit for Fat32 under Windows XP (even thought there wasn't under Win9x.) If your clone a system with Fat 32 to a drive larger than 32 GB before converting it you will get random errors.

wow ill keep that in mind though I have a 80 gb useing fat32 on xp.. but it shte onyl drive I could do it to since the other systems with xp running a 40gb or higher only gave me a option to format in ntfs, makes sense now.

This isn't strictly true..or perhaps i've just interpreted your comment incorrectly. Here's what Microsoft say about the 32GB FAT 32 limit in Windows XP:

"You cannot format a volume larger than 32 gigabytes (GB) in size using the FAT32 file system during the Windows XP installation process. Windows XP can mount and support FAT32 volumes larger than 32 GB (subject to the other limits), but you cannot create a FAT32 volume larger than 32 GB by using the Format tool during Setup. If you need to format a volume that is larger than 32 GB, use the NTFS file system to format it. Another option is to start from a Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Startup disk and use the Format tool included on the disk."

Thats taken from MSKB article 314463. Your post seems to indicate that WinXP doesn't support a drive larger than 32GB under FAT32 which i know to be untrue, as i'm running two 80GB FAT32 drives with WinXP@Home.

We are in the process of rolling our 200+ workstations to win 2000(ntfs) and are usining norton ghost 2002 Most shave been Imaged using a .gho image burnt to cd's, and so far and other than a bad image once in a while no big problems. So given your current woes I would give an image on cd a shot.

i have had to use a NEWER version of "ghost" to do win XP, and i used the latest version of both ghost AND "drive image" to copy XP.

i DON'T like "drive image", as it REMOVES the "active partition" setting from the SORCE drive. supposedly to "protect you" from booting from the old drive (that's what it tells you before you hit OK).

haven't any of you gone to SYMANTEC's web site and just looked it up??

Ghost is easy with XP, it requires no keys or switches or any of that.

Just set the drive up as slave and go into the XP disk manager and partition and format the drive but DO NOT assign a drive letter.

Reboot to your ghost disk and do a PARTITION to PARTITION copy, not drive to drive...

I have ghosted drives containing windows XP onto other hard drives many times with no problems. It sounds like you may either have a faulty new hard drive (not too likely because you say you used two different new drives) or you aren't using the correct type of IDE cable. I would replace the cable you're using for the new drives with a new UltraATA 100 cable. Theyre the type with 80 wires and 40-pin connectors. Make sure you plug the blue connector into your motherboard, the grey (middle) connector into your slave drive, and the black (end) connector into your master. There is no other reason I can think of that would be causing any problems for you.

You are correct. The first non-corporate version of Ghost to properly support NTFS is Ghost 2003, the new version.

I recently changed from a Maxtor 80GB drive to a WD 80GB SE drive and used Drive Image 2002 to copy the old drive to the new one.

I had no issues whatsoever.

The drive had 3 partitions on it. All were copied and sized properly.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "correctly support NTFS." Ghost 2002 and 2001 can both clone an NTFS partition without a problem, but what they can't do is save an image file onto or read an image file from an NTFS drive. Do you mean to say that ghost 2003 can save an image file onto an NTFS drive? If so, that would be great for me in my operations.

Ghost 7.0 doesn't support ntfs 5.1 correctly, im guessing thats the problem, you need ghost 7.5!

please note: "ghost7/7.5" are "corprete editions" and NOT the "retail" editions.

retail = 2002, 2003, ect.

most people do NOT have the corprete editions, or legal access to them.

True, but I am not shure that there is any of the retail versions that correctly supports win xp ntfs 5.1 partitions, and, corporate ed. 7.0 doesnt either, so I think CE 7.5 is the best way to do this, perhaps there is a way to download a trial version. :cool:

Just in case no one mentioned this yet but isn't ghosting with XP only supported by Ghost 7.5 ??

I haven't tried ghosting an XP box since October 2001, but I remember that Ghost 7.0 did not work. I had to upgrade to a newer version that handled the new version of NTFS found with XP.

Try ghosting with Ghost 7.5

I had a HDD 20Gb WD and I got a 80Gb. I download WD V.10 Ultra ATA Manager I was adle to copy all from the 20GB to the 80GB...I do not write good but I can call you if you email your number. Your you email WD for help

Maybe I missed it, But I've done this Sucessfully, but the Ghost Instructions say NOT TO BOOT UP WITH BOTH DRIVES in the system after the ghost. I'd disconnec the old drive, boot off the new drive, verify your info's intact. Then discconect the new drive and reconnect the old drive, BUT boot up with a floppy and fdisk the drive, even if the Partitions are in NFTS Fdisk will still alow you to delete non-dos partions. Good luck;)

I have had no issues with ghost 2002 or 2003 or CE 7.5 only thing is if there is to many hardware changes you have to reactivate windows and office. When I ghost I boot off a floppy disk with dos network drivers write images of partitions on server and image them to new workstation.

My first experience with Ghost was on a contract at a hospital and they had predesigned images for Windows NT. back then, thanks to Nt 4.0's lack of plug and play, the HAL had to be the same for every system meaning identical hardware that the image was designed for.
Now thanks to 2000 and the afor mentioned SYSPREP,it doesnt matter what system u reimage. I have made XP images and then when they are setup, use sysprep which removes all machine dependent drivers so that after u reimage, Windows plug and play finds the drivers (if it has them) then all is well.
We used to create Ghost images with Windows 98 that worked on multiple systems thanks to a few tricks we learned from the CompUSA home office in Dallas. If u wanna know some of them feel free to email me.

Well, that's _kind_ of correct :)

The HAL still has to be the same, i.e. ACPI or Standard PC.

However, hardware CAN be different.

2 weeks ago I've replaced an older drive with a new 80GB drive. Had dual boot XP/2000 and 3 NTFS partitions (Basic Disk). Partition Magic did the job with no problems. I took the old drive and put it into my wife's PC (2000/NTFS/Dynamic disk). Partition magic wouldn't work with dynamic disks:mad:. Latest Ghost did it though and I got a basic disk.:cool:
BTW: does your BIOS have support for 80Gig HDD's?

after all the posts i think we would all know now you need ghost 7.5 to do a win xp drive transfer which is what we use at work.

also to get back to the original posters problem the second thing you had was you could not install xp fresh from the cd this is more than likely caused from your gforce2 mx card.

what you have to do is install the os with a diff video card load the os completely then change back to your gforce2 mx card or xp will usually hang on the initial blue screen at install (generally on via chipsets more than others) believe me ive seen it.
