well it could have been more, it was so stable, but spider.exe wouldn't run so I went back to xp. :p
Bah, you people are comparing apples to oranges, linux was not created to be a desktop OS (however its going towards that way) its made for server side applications such as web servers, FTP servers, print servers etc etc etc. the list goes on and on.
Linux is great, if you have a use for it (ie, webserver), if not then you are wasting your time unless you just want to learn something new.
true for most Window users.Quote:

Though I love Unix based OS's. To me its eaiser to use. I can do more in it and you can make Xwindows look like what ever you want. Xwindows looks nice.
Now if you get really good supported hardware and fast like you would with windows and run linux for the desktop it runs great. Ut2003 quake 3 run great, faster or just as fast as windows. The nvidia drivers for linux rock.
Its cool if you dont use it, but for a free OS cannot complain.
one reason I went with a new mac (jaguar 10.2) was that its freebsd w/ mac gui what can go wrong. Its stable as unix and the great look of the mac desktop. runs very fast. I can run my unix apps on it and also mac apps. Love it.
Though as a computer tech (if you want to be one) I siggest learning other os's than windows or else your not a tech you a (windows tech) nothing more. (and anyone can be a windows tech)
as of irc. ircii is installed by defualt, and if you install xwindows with gnome or kde you will have xchat and bitchx. (irc clients)
then you can always get a irc daemon which are very simple to install. Always read the README files they tell you step by step how to install programs.
Anyother thing about unix based OS's I love is the ability to compile your software, this is great it optimizes the software for your hardware and it will run better.
But hey if you tried it and found it wasnt for you, will I give you props for trying. Not alot of window techs will try it.
for a desktop OS this sure does look interesting.
www.lycoris.com I think I'm going to order a copy for $29 just to see how it is.
the biggest problem Linux will face in capturing any share of the desktop is in application, games, and drivers.
the real "tech" games like Q3 and Unreal are out for linux but most mainstream "Walmart available titles" like Madden 2003 and other EA games are only windows.
the stuff that makes linux attractive to techs like compiling your own software is one of the biggest reasons it's having a tough time getting on the desktop. it's hard enough to explain to grandma how to open an email attachment - let alone how to compile a linux program from a command prompt.
I'll be exposed to it more in the coming weeks. have a 4 hour a week class (12 weeks) in it. Hopefully I'll learn enough to be able to deal with it in a support enviroment.
hehe have you ever used evolution?Quote:

How the heck are these real "tech" games? Sorry, I got really bored with running around shooting the same people a long time ago. Everquest is fun, teh civilization line is also good, the two Age of Empires games are also fun. Are they only for kiddies? Like maybe the types that are playing the Quoted games.Quote:

And why the hell is the use of Linux or Unix the ways to tell if you are a "real" tech? Give me a break. Yeah, I am going to go learn something that 99% of the world doesn't bother to use, so that it won't help me one bit in the real world, just so I can call myself a "real" tech. I will remember that when I get my "real" paychecks, from a "real" company that hired me as a tech and administrator.
:flame: teh die11!!!!
all I meant was that games that computer technicians and other who are in the MIS/IT field seem to play a lot like quake3 and unreal seem to have linux versions available but the more mainstream games do not.
I didn't mean tech as in technological advanced. I only game with sports games from EA and my wife is addicted to the sims.
:)
see what m$ is doing to you man!!! :DQuote:

Uhm, because it takes more than 5 minutes to sit down and learn *nix OS's. Most "techs" are nothing more than glorified chimps, linux is a "test" of sorts to see if they really have the skill/heart/smarts etc to work with computers. I'm not saying that you have to run *nix to be a tech, but it shows you have the smarts to learn something that doesnt hold yer hand.Quote:

And lot of the world who wish to run servers run *nix....not windows.
Look at the job offerings for *nix based positions...
So once again, you are saying that say, the A+ certification, compromised of all the major companies as the cert for a computer Tech doesn't really make a tech, because they spend so much time on the Windows platforms rather than any others.Quote:

Look, if I was more of an Administrator to Engineer, then yes I absolutly know that I would have to have a strong knowledge of *nix platforms. But as current I am a Desktop Support Tech to helpdesk to administrator to PC Tech. How many companies are going to be running Windows compared to Apple based to *nix based for your front line "tech". On that aspect the "tech" needs Windows based, as well as the 18 million software titles that work with it and those that your own company has developed or had developed for their personal use.
Then you have to keep up with the hardware as well.
Then when you are done, you come here for some support and harmless fun, and you see some other tech say that you are a chump because you don't use nor take the time to use a technology that will not improve your work performance one bit for your current position or others that you would want. Sorry, I get enough of that crap from the users around here.
but it WILL help you get a better job!Quote:

I just installed it(Linux) to dual-boot with my Windows 2000. I can't get it to connect to the network though. Oh well, back to Windows until I have more time to play.
And once again I will state, if Microsoft or Bill Gates is listening, I will be your little bitch for some cash. I will tear down your enemies, I shall not falter, I shall not halt, for plenty of cash will be my guardian, and all other OS's shall tremble when they hear the name Cleetus uttering out his faith and devotion unto that which is known as WINDOWS!!!!
hehe though if you want alot of cash Windows platform is not the way to go due to all the techs that know windows already. A company can hire as many techs as they want and pay them crap cause they know if the tech quits they can eaisly repalce them for someone who will work for less money.Quote:

My problem with Linux is not having enough water and ice for the http://www.pssclabs.com/gif/ani_penguin.gif
Cleetus, you are very right that more people use windows than *nix, and thats because grandma dont want to compile her own programs.
As for people saying yer a chump if ya dont use it...thats dumb, some people just dont like it and thats cool. But many people knock it before they have tried it, or they knock it after playing with it for 20 minutes. Its a totally different OS, you didnt learn Windows overnight so what makes you think that you can learn unix/linux overnight?
I'll also admit its not for the desktop, its for servers, but its also gaining ground in the desktop world
Actually I was quoting you call me a chump:D :DQuote:

After spending 4 years as a corporate level tech, I think I also know that many, many companies just are not going to switch any time soon. That is why Comptia pushes Windows, that is why I study mostly Windows and windows apps. I am not saying that *nix based OS's are bad or dumb or anything else. I am just being a realist and know what the companies really use and really want at the user level. "techs" and programmers and their ilk will always take the time and explore different things, but the normal person will not. And being my job to support these people and to ensure that they get what they want and need most, I am stuck using and learning all I can of Microsofts product. There just is no competition for the knowledge.
But hey, its all good;)
if you have a broadband connection you can download the ISO of Lycoris for free...save you $30 for something you mite not want to keep.Quote:

poking around on their website don't see a download link.
When did I even remotely say anything to the effect that you were a chump? :confused:Quote:

pick CD1 from the listing.
Anyone else notice that this place is in Redmond? Are they slapping M$ or is it owned by M$?
Lycoris used to be 'Redmond Linux'...a slap at M$ i think.
Quoted it once and here it is again. And I guess I really don't know anything saying I am working out of one of the largest cities in the US, one of the most populous states in the US, I learned everything I know while working right smack dab in the middle of the telecom corridor of North Texas, vast majority of my friends are in IT from North Texas to Austin to here in Houston. You are so right, nobody uses Windows anymore, it is so dieing out. PleaseQuote:
