Got a brand new 19" monitor today from a local computer show. I love it so far. HOWEVER, there seems to be some type of coating on the screen. I have seen simular coatings on Dell CRTs before. Everytime you touch it it SMEERS. I have tried to clean it but am scared to use anything on it. HOW THE H*LL DO I CLEAN THIS THING??? I have touched it to remove smudges 5 or 6 times and now where I touched it is smeered. PLEASE suggest something. I hate this:(

I just clean mine with windex and paper towels,
mine smudges too,I just don't touch it,
my kids and wife touch the monitor screens and I don't know why people have to touch the screen? WHY?
if your screen smudges when you touch it! then don't touch it! LOL

The anti-glare coating can show up smears, be careful with it - if it gets damaged it can make the image look poor.
Unfortunately some anti-glare treatments can be harmed by glass cleaners, which typically contain alcohol and/or ammonia.
See if it will clean up with a bunched soft tissue, if possible consult the supplier to see if any restrictions apply to that particular monitor.
I know Philips is one who have issued warnings about damage to coatings on CRT's from glass cleaners.

I use Endust for Electronics wipes. No ammonia.
I read this post and started thinking ( oh, thats never good) about what I use. I actually got worried that I was cleaning my monitor improperly. I checked Viewsonic's site and found the following information:
ViewSonic: Cleaning CRT monitors:
Wipe the screen with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. This removes dust and other particles.
If still not clean, dampen the soft cloth with water.
If still not clean, apply a small amount of non-ammonia, non-alcohol based glass cleaner onto a clean, soft, lint-free cloth, and wipe the screen.
Warning: ammonia/alcohol based glass cleaner will damage the ARAG coating. Always spray cleaner onto cloth, NEVER directly onto screens.
Cleaning LCD monitors:
Wipe the screen with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. This removes dust and other particles.
If still not clean, apply a small amount of non-ammonia, non-alcohol based glass cleaner onto a clean, soft, lint-free cloth, and wipe the screen with only a slight pressure. Too much pressure may damage the screen.
Warning: DO NOT use water on LCD monitor.
Cleaning monitor case:
Use a soft, dry cloth.
If still not clean, apply a small amount of a non-ammonia, non-alcohol based, mild non-abrasive detergent onto a clean, soft, lint-free cloth, then wipe the surface.
I found that I am ok, I use an eyeglass cleaning cloth and a little water if needed. I clean the monitor while it is off, as I can streaks and dirt better.

Make sure there's plenty of water in the bathtub.

I use a special screen Cleaner from 3M - it does not effect the coating.
It is however expensive.

I have 2 Compaq,and a Phillips,and a Viewsonic,I have always used windex and papertowels,and I have never noticed and kind of damage to any of my screens,but after reading these posts,maybe I will rethink my cleaning method.Quote:

There is an A+ question that deals with this issue. i have never seen an anti glare coating before and now that I know what it is I'll avoid buying those monitors. I think that may be the same stuff they use on eye glasses now and you can clean the glasses with saop and water and pat them dry with a soft cloth though they don't recomend this either.
You might want to go get a lens cleaning cloth and see if that works - it's a lint free cloth that is super soft or they make ones that are really weird feeling that you can clean things like cameras and this with.
Simple answer to anyone who insists on prodding the monitor. I switch to my old 15" Compaq screen - that thing builds up static at an unbelievable rate :flames:
I forgot about a bottle of Kensington Screen Guardian sitting next to my computer here. Says its safe for antiglare coating. Smells like alkeyhol though and does contain 2-butoxyethanol and ethanol (which is a form of alcohol). Don't know if I would use it on a screen with the antiglare coating even though it says it's safe but I'm just letting you know that it's there.
You might want to run hand or something over the surface of the screen before using flammable cleaner, static can be an ignition source:flame:
I worked as a Lab Manager for Pearle Vision for 5yrs and we always used alcohol to clean Anti-Reflective coatings on lenses. It worked like a charm as AR coated lenses are notorious for smearing and streaking. I am not sure if the coatings are exactly the same on a computer monitor. I would use a Q-tip to test a small area (perhaps in a corner) first.
i usually recomend take your monitor into the bathroom
fill the bathtub up half way
plug the monitor in
stand with one foot in the tub the other on the tile
and proceed to dunk the monitor in and out of the water several times, i find this works well.......
on a more serious note i would recomend some antistatic wipes and to quit touching the monitor

Fill up the bathtub (not too deep, just a few inches) with lukewarm water. Then your monitor can swim around in there for a while and you dont really have to do anything else. Monitors really enjoy this as it helps them go to the bathroom........though you may not enjoy having to clean it up afterwards.....but it does make for a healthy and happy monitor.
Oh, wait a minute.....monitor/computer screen.....not monitor/lizard.

One advantage I have found in having a baby in the house again is using the baby wipes to clean the monitor!!!
If these things can remove the brown stuff from a shiny new bottom without causing the delicate skin any harm, then they sure as hell are not going to harm a monitor. They make my monitor screen look like a clean bum :)
