Annoying problem

Well I'm stummped. For ages now I've been having problems with mouse lock ups. It just stops working. I posted about this b4 and somone advised it was graphics driver related. This makes sense as it mostly happens during games. But it seems to happen no matter what drivers I use. I havnt tried all combinations but am useing latest dets from nvidia and latest via's.

Then I put togeather a unit from spare bits and it happens on this new unit. Driving me insane and I dont know how to fix?? I think I must be missing somthing.

PC's are:
kr7a raid 133 with xp1900, latest bios, gf3 original, sonic fury, 98se dirx 8.1b. Latest via/nvidia drivers.

kg7 raid xp1600 gf2 mx, cheap sound card, 98se dirx 8.1b. Latest amd/nvidia/via/bios.

Any advice enjoyed.

OK, firstly, how is your AGP configured in the BIOS?

How much RAM is in the machines, I see they are different cards, so it's probably not the cards that are at fault.

I'd put it down to possibly aperature size or IRQ's

Both PC's:
Fast writes enabled
AGP apature 32
4* enabled
acpi enabled
mmm, dont think its bios agp settings thou as I have only developed this prob 2 months ago or somthing like that and always use these settings with nvidia based cards. Perhaps irq then?

possibly, I tend to use a 64meg Aperature, maybe look into that?

mmm I said I always use these settings but actually I used to use whatever setting was half my ram or 256 and only turned down to 32 after buying Medieval TW and it wouldnt run without agp apature set to this value. Anyway problem persists on any agp apature setting it seems.:confused: :(

can you get a screen dump of your settings? I only ask so I can compare them to mine..

Just games or other stuff? Mouse the only thing not working?
Opengl drivers! When they fire up, they take 'focus' of the mouse that is they re-draw it instead of windoze as well as all the 'backgrounds' oft they forget to release the mouse, this is an IRQ issue but not in the normal sense-'conflict'- but more ownership, the opengl driver still has an open process which 'owns' the mouse, usually unpacking the appropriate ICD (Installable Client Driver) into windows\system32 or wherever yours needs to go solves it....

This is a driver issue... if the drivers put all the 'stuff' they ought to in the right place... then this wouldn't happen, but windoze doesn't really officially support opengl, natively most versions of windoze ship with a MCD (Mini client driver) which is a 'cut down' version of an ICD which supports limited opengl functions.

The latest Nvidia driver is very rarely the greatest.... try some others.....

This ain't anything to do with the mouse, if all the screen was 'misbehaving' then yes... but here no.

Thanks confused, some questions thou. Where do I find the ICD I need and if it dosnt go in system32 where would it go?? Thanks for help.

Its in the detonator drivers, geforce card drivers support both opengl & direct 3d some other cards don't & you have to get the other bit, I went a bit general, I think it allways goes in system32?, but there are newer & older versions available....

Detonator drivers are cunningly made into self extracting exe's, so you can't mix 'n' match opengl versions and drivers :mad: , so I guess your limited to what you can find to download

Try seeing if you can run the offending games with direct 3d enabled instead of gl.

You have been uninstalling all the drivers each time I've had trouble many times with 98 confusing itself with different driver versions...

How much system memory is there here? Even though I said the gart has nothing to do with it, it might if the total of system memory & gart is more than 512MB, which is quite likely...

If you install WinRar or Winzip, and right click on the exe file, and select extra to.... you can unpack the drivers to a directory from there.

One of our "bunnies" had exactly this problem in his similar spec machine. (We eventually got round it (having tried everything suggested and more plus a full re-install) by using a USB mouse instead of the PS/2. My conclusion was that the problem had to be a conflict of sorts, even though none was reported by Windows. The problem only came about after he upgraded his video adapter from a Voodoo to the G-Force.

Ummm isn't the point of a 'self-extracting .exe' that you don't need zip/rar & it extracts itself & runs when you execute it....?

No extract to option when I right click its an .exe not a zip or rar.....

Ok, its no prob to open an nvidia driver .exe with winrar. It just works. But I cant see anything along the lines of an icd file. But this is all new to me and I appreciate more help......

Yes, that is the point of a self extracting exe, but you mentioned about mixing icd's and such between driver packs, I was just suggesting a way that this was possible (and it works for me):D

Well I'm still not convinced about 'opening' .exe files so you can get to the bits inside ... but that's besides the point ... so f you can great!

Have a look on your system for files named opengl.dll or opengl32.dll, hopefully besides the one in windows\system32 you should find some others tucked away in the offending game folders, these want replacing with the one in your system32 directory, unless the offending game offers 'glide' or '3dfx' support - these use the aforementioned MCD, in which case you need to look on the game sites developers support section to see if you can find the appropriate bit..

I'm always tuely amazed when people bang on about Nvidia support being so good.... its pants :rolleyes: - how many driver revisions ?- where are the reference drivers laid out clearly, where are the explanations, where is a direct 3d only driver, etc etc .... No bloomin wonder some of the 'later' revisions of the geforce series actually support less opengl features than the earlier, the most pertinent of these being the geforce 3 and geforce 4 mx - the gf3 supports more than the 4, WTF?

I don't really want to get into all this, ALL I was saying was try some older drivers... The ones on the nvidia site are usually only the best for the most current card, the ones that give the best frame rate for quake so that Nvidia can wave that flag & shout we are fastest !! Perhaps they might try remembering all the dumb schmoes who bought their other products & would like a driver that would work all the time, first time, every time.....

Ok I dont know if I'm being stuipied or what but I cant find any files called opengl.dll only one called opengl32.dll in the windows/system folder. none in the game directories. where am I going now. May have a look on some sites devoted to nvidia drivers/cards... But anything I'm missing please post about...
