when i open explorer it always expands my C drive so i can see all the folders. i don't want it to do this. i just want to see all the hard drives and then expand them if i want to.
how do i stop this. its only my C drive. the others don't expand. its annoying as hell...
try this:
launch explorer
contract "C" drive
click once on C to highlight/select
tools > folder options > view > click "like current folder" button > ok > ok
close explorer
open explorer and see if that worked
This ought to do it registry settings
thanks, but neither of them worked. although it seems when i put the registry edit in there it that is "thinks" about it for a minute before popping open all the folders on my C drive.
this is really frustrating, and i am sure there is probably some simple setting, but geez......

hmm...i have another computer with win2000 and it does not do this.
no idea why......
I'm not sure I understand your problem...If I launch explorer on my machine it expands my 'C' drive also.....I thought that was the point and I use it for that function.On the other hand if I want to view all my drives without expanding them I've always just double clicked 'My Computer'. :confused:
shamus, yes, that is what is happening on mine as well. i just don't want it to immediately open the c drive and show all the folders.
i just want it to list the drives. essentially what is happening is by doing that i can't see all the other networked drives i am connected to below it without collapsing my c drive. that and there are certain folders that i don't want certain people to see that i have on my drive (i know what you're thinking, and it is NOT porn, more like HR type stuff).
I guess my point was that I use explorer to search my c drive and I use My Computer to see all the drives on my network or personal 'puter. I have certain folders I don't want people seeing either ( and it's all porn :D ;)...all teh porn...) seriously...I keep them on a drive other then C. Just what I do...matter of preference. ;)
yes, that works but i guess now it is just more a matter of personal knowledge that i want to know why it is doing it and my other computer is not.
would be nice to fix as well, but the my computer option is workable.
compare the registry setting in each for windows explorer
well i included the following in the shortcut from my start menu : C:\WINNT\explorer.exe /n,/e,c:\ ,,,this does exactly what u DONT want , but i find it perfect for my use ,
instead of being compressed , with a view of doccys etc , it takes me strieght to c: (expanded) ,,,,maybe you havethis setting?

Now I'M curious how to do it! I tried the reg hack NooNoo posted and it has no effect...still opens expanded.(Win98SE) :confused:
The hack is for MAKING it expand.. I was thinking it could be set in reverse as it were...

I use this to get to a different drive expanded:
explorer /e,/root,/select,x:
what you could try is this:
explorer /e,/select,x:
X can be any drive you wish...
To make a shortcut work the way I think you want it to, put this:
%windir%\explorer.exe /e,/select,x:
as the target.

I forgot to mention, these are all command line switches above. You don't need to go into the registry.

aha! thanks. i found another way also....
i had a shortcut to explorere that i had dragged onto the quick luanch part. that was the one opening to an expanded c: drive.
when i went to start - accessories - windows explorer, it did NOT do it, it went to my documents. so i deleted my quick launch shortcut and then copied windows explorer out of my start menu to the quick launch again and WALLAH! it works. thank god.
and now when i look at the comman line parameters for it in properties, all it has is %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe.
so noonoo was right as well.

i can hardly wait for the day when i get to sit down with my kids and say "let me tell you about the time your daddy stayed up for 2 days trying to figure out how to stop the C: drive from expanding"

that friendlytree registry hack didn't work for me no matter what i set it to......

Having looked for specific settings for explorer and found nothing satisfactory, other than turning up information about how the registry is limited to so many settings and that IE adds to the confusion, I give up :D
Try this one also...
explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, c:\
Your local drive, drive connections, and other devices will be displayed, but none will show any detail.

Try going to their site (www.techtv.com/screensavers) and doing a search.
I believe it involved a Registry Entry.

Use [Windows key] + [E] to launch explorer or create a shortcut to %windir%\explorer.exe. Either way should open explorer to display all drives view.
