Upgrading Motherboard

Went to upgrade my motherboard, CPU and memory the other day, and had some weird problems. As far as I know, I did everything right. I disconnected everything off the old motherboard (an ASUS K7M), put in the new one (A SOYO KT-333 Dragon Lite), hooked everything up, and powered it up. The HDD light stayed on all the time (the cables were correct), the power light never came on (wire was correct), and no video output. This happened on three motherboards. Same symptoms. Luckily, the place I bought them asked no questions when I returned them. After returning the second motherboard, they checked out the second motherboard, and it was dead. The place hooked up the third motherboard to a mock-up, and got it to POST, with video out. Being extra careful, hooked it up, and had the same symptoms.

The old motherboard worked fine when I put it back in.

What did I do wrong ??? I've done the same thing for friends a bunch of trimes, with no problems....

Tried a new power supply?

Tried hooking it up with no drives connected at all just ram and video and the hdd led disconnected?

Tried that with the third MB. Still the same. PS is 300W, which should be more than enough. Plus, it works with the old MB.

Maybe you left a stand-off in the wrong place. :confused:

That's what the store thought, after the second board. But I triple-checked for the third board......

So, the question is: Should I try again, or has my luck run out for the rest of the year ???

How about taking it to the shop and putting it together infront of the tech there, have him check you as you go?

That's probably not an option, as it's a big store, and they're not really set up to do that.

Any other reasons can you think of that I may have done wrong (other than the stand offs). ???

try setting the board up on the bench without any screws, just a cpu, stick of ram, vid card and short the power pins - see what happens, btw does the fan on the hsf turn??

That's what the store did for their mockup. Yes, the fans turned all three times.

yes, but did you is what I'm asking. This is the type of thing I always do when I build a machine. Rare if I don't.

All three boards were taken back by the store, and my money is back in my pocket.

I was going to give the gift of smoking motherboards to someone. Any takers ???

The store did just that for the third MB, and I took it home and installed it like I normally would (after triple-checking the stand-offs), and it smoked also. Don't think the store would allow me to try it with a fourth MB. Maybe after the New Year, they'll forget, and I can try it again...... :D :D :D

The third motherboard did POST at the store a couple of times. So I presume the memory was good - a stick of PC2700 Corsair. I'm still trying to figure out how I shorted out three motherboards.

sounds like some fun I had at camp last year...took an old compy, stripped what we wanted out of it, set it outside, turned it on, and lit the case on fire. compy worked well for about 30 minutes, then the capacitors blew, PS melted, and threw the main breaker at the camp. would have been great to have sparks fly with the flames.
