I am getting this error on Windows 2000 machines when trying to move mp3's:
Error Copying File or Folder:
Cannot copt artist - song name.mp3: There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
I have seen this before and fix for it, but can't seem to be able to find it again.
Did you use a P2P file sharing app to download this file?
Heh, this is an easy one.
See when you click the file, a play button opens on the left hand side of the explorer window?
You just opened the file.
Don't click it, right drag it.
I know it is this "feature" of 2K that is causing this. I want to move multipe files at the same time, which involves highlighting them. There is a reg key that can be changed to shut the feature off, but in my couple of hours of searching google I can't seem to find it. I was hoping someone else knew of it and had a better memory than I do :D
Couldn't find a reg hack, but I did find this snippet -Quote:

Or change the file extension on your files to *tha4 or whatever, shift 'em and change it back

Floppy boot, COPY *.mp3 \destination, DEL *.mp3 ? Or are the machines networked?
If the problem is caused by an Explorer "feature", couldn't the files be copied as above from a Command Prompt?
renaming is no problem...It has to do with the feature of 2000 scanning the file "preview" in the left pane which causes the move error. I can copy via dos with no problem, but unfortunately I am trying to pick and chose files and the "move whatever.mp3 d:\folder" command gets tedious. I can move them one at a time by right-dragging (which is what I am cuurently doing...but it takes so long since there are over 8000 files in this folder and I want to move some and leave others :)
I guess the real question is: how do you turn off the feature in 2000 that automatically opens the file on the left side of the window?
That would be in mycomputer, tools, folder options, view.
I'm sure NooNoo is right (am not worthy!!), but I don't use the Windows Media Player as default media player, and using the third party I do doesn't recreate your problem (Sonique)
If I wanted to stop this with an image file, I'd turn off "Show thumbnails" - does this work the sound file launch too?

Have you gone
MyComputer>Tools>Folder Options and tried setting click items to>
Double-click to open an item, single-click to select
Should have thought of that earlier......

I find myself all to often doing copy, paste, delete. Instead of cut paste. Boo hoo, there is a third step in copying files.
If you're using a P2P program someone might be downloading it at that moment. Then the file is opened and of course it can not be deleted.. have seen this many times... Or if you are on a network and have it shared with other users.. the same problem. Close all P2P apps that you have, check that the file is not in use by someone else and try again.. it will work :cool:Quote:

my computer, tools, folder options,under the general tab ,look for WEB VIEW check the box for USE WINDOWS CLASSIC FOLDERS this will eleminate the section to the left of the folders (preview pane):)
I've had the same issue, but it's not copying that's the problem; it's MOVING. I just copy the file and then delete the old one, which seems to work for some god-awful reason.
Yep, that's why I asked way back if it was d/loaded using a p2p app. I have had exactly the same problem myself with WinMX.Quote:
