Need some advice on drugs...

No, not THOSE drugs. :D

What I need is if anybody here has been on, or knows someone on, either Celexa or Paxil, I would very much appreciate any personal accounts of the experience, either good or bad. *EDIT* I would also now appreciate any comments from anyone who has experiences to relate about ANY antidepressant, including as well but not limited to Prozac, Wellbutrin, Zoloft, or any others, too.

Are they some kind of mood altering drugs???

I'm mostly on anti rejection drugs, blood pressure medication, kidney stone rejection treatment meds, and vitamins!!!!

Some people who have diabetes, AIDS, cancer and others can be on many different kinds of meds.

My wife tried both and she had some problems with appetite loss and sexual appetite loss so she decided to quit taking them. She's on prozac now and loves it.

Cookin Chef, they are antidepressants, some of them have other uses as well.

I was on paxil for a while. It ended up causing me to yawn excessively then shake for several second after each yawn. All in all very odd. It didn't really seem to help all that much, though I should say that I don't know what the doctors thought it would help since I wasn't depressed. He said that I showed all these signs of depression since I didn't do anything, I didn't go out with friends, I didn't go to school....but I didn't have much choice about that seeing as how I was physically ill. He never did seem to understand that whole point though.

My ex-wife was on prozac and another anti-depressant. It didn't seem to do anything for her after first couple of weeks. Sex drive went from slim to never as a result of the meds--sleep was sporadic from none to all day--spose to be common side effects. My advice is solve the problem another way if possible. Find a good counseler and be honest with them and whoever you are involved with. Course first the patient needs to be able to be honest with themselves!

My brother is on Zoloft. He doesn't think it does anything for him, but everyone around sure knows when he hasn't taken it. I've heard it can have......sexual side effects in men.......but that's not exactly the kind of thing I discuss with my brother.

Took Prozac for about a two month period, basically because I was in a state of depression that was preventing me from functioning normally and going about my daily work, etc.

Worked very well for me. I stopped it when I decided I was past the worst and could handle a bit of "standard" depression.

On the flip-side, one long-term girlfriend had been on anti-depressants since the age of 18, met her when she was 29. Not good, she was totally dependant and unable to function properly even using them as prescribed.

So, long in short of it is - I found Prozac great to get me through a short-term, very bad period of my life. Long-term I would be very wary of them.

Best of luck to whoever it is that is considering taking them. Depression and related conditions are horrible things to deal with, personally and as a bystander.

stay away from Zoloft....it is the most horrendous drug I know. It nearly killed me many many times and I have never taken it. My Ex Husband was on it amongst other varied pills and every time he WOULN"T take it, I would get beaten to a pulp within four days of him stopping. I could count it down sometimes. It also made him impotent which in turn caused other problems including incessant masturbation to the point of gravel rash all down his penis, as he could not ejaculate.

Some of you know the horror I endured and I put it down to Zoloft and other anti depressants. After a time the drugs made his brainy a fuzzy ball of fairy floss.

Stay away from the anti depressants clammie. They just mask the symptoms, they do not address the cause or cure it. They make it worse in the long run and they are extremely hard to withdraw from, not from the psychological need for more, but for the brain changes and chemical unbalances it causes when coming off it.

Celexa is the best selling antidepressant in thirteen countries, including eight in Europe. It is a newer antidepressant belonging to the SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) group. While there have not been as many reports of violent or suicidal behavior associated with this drug, discontinuation of Celexa can cause similar side affects to those seen with the discontinuation of other SSRIs. However, because Celexa leaves the body more gradually, the discontinuation side effects appear to be less severe than what is seen with other SSRIs. Discontinuation side effects of all SSRIs can include the following:
» Agitation and anxiety
» Worsening of depression
» Violent or suicidal behavior
» Aggressive and impulsive behavior
» Dizziness
» Ataxia (coordination problems)
» Parasthesia (shock like sensations, abnormal nerve sensations)

1991 FDA Antidepressant Update

Interest continues in reports of an association between the use of certain antidepressants, in particular Prozac, and suicidal thoughts and acts (suicidality) or other violent behavior. FDA's Psychopharmacological Drugs Advisory Committee met on September 20, 1991, to discuss this matter.
The following may be used to answer inquiries. In the opening public session, the Committee heard testimony from patients, advocacy groups, and other interested parties. Some described negative experiences that they attributed to Prozac, while others testified in support of Prozac and said that suicidality is a frequent finding in depressive illness, unrelated to the medication.

I took prozac for about 7 years. It wasn't for depression, it was actually to control migraines that were plaguing me 3-4 times a week. Keep in mind I wasn't on as high of dosage as someone that takes it for depression. It did help alot with the migraines, brought them down to one every 3-4 months. It didn't mess with me at all, and I actually slept alot better cuz it settled down whatever in there was causing things to wack out and create the migraines.

I have since went off it after I found out the migraines were being caused by damage in my neck from going thru a windshield at 13. I didn't really have any problems going off it, but I kinda did so gradually as I was afraid of the migraines coming back. I still get those occasionally, but an adjustment to my neck takes care of it now.

All in all my experience with prozac was positive.

I have a friend who was on Paxil to help him quit smoking. When it's a severe thing - the doctor considered the smoking an "obsessive / compulsive" thing. It worked to ease the cravings and stresses.

Zoloft is like a lower level prozak. It just took the "edge" off - but had a few side effects that were annoying.

I know people on Prozak and they're fine. One of them is a bit too "perky" but I think she's that way anyways...

Hey Paul my wife has been on low dose Paxil for a few years now with no problems (she has panic attacks - pretty much under control now). However before that they had tried her on a couple of MAO Inhibiters. Bad news them thar dugs are. She had a heck of a time getting off those buggers. + they cause a lot of side effects. :(

As for zoloft, I had a girlie on it and when she was on the correct dose she was happy and horny and I was a happy guy. Her shrink got an intern and he decided it was in her best interest to up the dose and she went wacko, crying all the time over nothing, depressed again, no horny, in fact anti horny, snappy, angry.

You probably need to find what is going to work best for you and you are going to need to find the right dose. Good luck.

OUCH!!! :(

I always understood that when someone goes through a windshield, it is usually fatal or that person is severely injured.

People, I think we are jumping to conclusions here. The clam man never said anything about these medications he was inquiring about were for him. I think he knows someone who is taking these and wishes to know more about them. If I'm wrong, then I know Clammie will correct me on this.

I too suffer from the odd depression. Mostly because of issues with my transplant. Some of you may recall what I went through a few months back, I was ready to kill myself.

I don't like taking meds. But I have too in order to keep my transplant from being rejected. There was a point they wanted me to take some prozac or another, but I refused. I don't like mind altering drugs. I know that anti-depressants are required for special circumstances like what the others have mentioned here.

I think anti depressants should be used as an absolute last resort when all other possible leads are exhausted. I think we are getting way too dependant on pills.

It's just not healthy.

Thanks chef, true they happen, they have, but not for a long, long time.

Way I see it, anti-depressants are there to help you with the symptoms while you address the causes - least that's the way I use em.

Yes Chef, I mean chiropractor, he is slowly correcting (as much as it can be done) the damage done in my neck..and all the subsequent years of letting it go (well really not knowin that was the cause) been on treatment for a year and have alot of improvement! :D

As for going thru the windshield...yeah that SUCKS< and its not something I recommend you do in your leisure time! :D

As for antidepressants, Paxil takes away your sex drive and takes 6 weeks to work. There are things out there alot better than that.

whatever you settle to take, make sure you're not taking other drugs that might make the whole thing a toxic combo. good luck.....d;)

my brother use to take paxil because he had social anxoity or something, but when he would take it he wasnt the same, almost as if he was kinda drunk and sober at the same time. not his usual self, also made bad decisions on certain situations.
try not to take paxil.

my brother is not taking it anymore thank god, my brothers shrink was a piece of sh*t , in my personal opinion

For me Paxil was evil. A very disturbing period starting out on it -- cold anger, disorientation, confusion, etc. Once stabalized I found it numbing. Going off it after a period of two years or so was even more disturbing -- severe deep black depression, disorientation, confusion.

Welbutrin did absolutely nothing for me.

For me the best is getting up out of bed and forcing myself to do things. Social contact, exercise, work, etc. help short circuit depression and anxiety. I know this does not work for everyone. But for me mood altering drugs just offered me a different set of problems.

:thumbs2: :) :) I am currently on my 2nd round of Prozac, all my experiences are good and positive when I started to take them, He put me on 2 a day but I end as high as a kite so he reduced it to one a day. :) :)

:rolleyes: At his present time I am on two a day but I personal feel that there effect has leveled off. :cool:

:devil: It is the other tablets that I have to take at this time they effect the way Prozac works. :devil:

I am often skeptical about touchy-feely self-help books that promise miracles. That said, however, I do like this book:

If you are not expecting miracles and if you are willing to put in the effort, the book can be helpful. "Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage....." Your perception of the world is of your choosing. The book can be help you win "battles" with depression and can help provide strength to continue "the war." For some, it may even help them win the war and without drugs.

Anti-depressants don't work well for me, but I suspect it has a lot to do with my altering my brain chemistry through extreme recreational medication when I was younger. Welbutrin in particular, just makes me flat. I just don't give a darn about anything. My wife has horrible side effects when she comes off Paxil. Quote, "My brain starts banging against my skull." All in all, there are a multitude of medications available and everybody reacts to them differently. If what you're on doesn't work, try something else, or try to go it cold turkey, it is all up to the individual. ;)

No one in this old old thread mentioned Diet Soda so i figured it was my duty to step up to the plate and bring this thread to the current list.

I Began drinking diet soda to try and lose weight, I'm tall and heavy set and if I wasn't the heavy part, I'd be ok looking (me thinks). So as one of my steps, I drank Coke Zero which tasted really good for diet soda, diet Dr P isn't too bad either. Then one day a client came in my office and said "Hey, you know diet soda causes depression" and in bewilderment I said I didn't know. Here's the funny thing, I'm normally not depressed and if, very slightly but during this time I was going through an increasing feeling of depression.

As she instructed, I search for Aspartame and found a bunch of sites that connected the use of dietary supplements such as Aspartame to cause depression and anxiety. I stopped drinking diet soda that day and have not felt the depression or anxiety I felt back then since.

My recommendation to anyone feeling depressed, who drinks diet soda, to stop drinking diet soda cold turkey for at least a week and increase exercise (like short walks around their block) and see if this doesn't resolve the issue with out the drugs.

I was on Paxil, Celebrex and Prozac all at different times of course for about 3 years or more for severe depression from liver treatments and once the treatment were over it took and 4 to 6 months of tapering of to get off them. They are addicting but they will tell you there not. I got terrible headaches and dizziness when I tried to quit cold. Don't get started if you don't need to.
