Oh, you mean they aren't supposed to be that colour? :D :D
My fans get like that in a month! It's gonna get worse soon, will be having a nice new carpet just outside the office door.
Been there, seen that ( Too many times! )
thats not that bad, the fan probably still turns, you know its bad when the fan cannpt turn cause of the build up of dust and other crap. I should start taking pics of the crap I see
if i would have seen this thread last week i could have posted a few doozies. a few years ago i built a celeron machine, he came back in last week and said the machine was dead, it wouldn't boot anymore. i open the case and the thing is so caked with dirt, dust and dog hair that not only was the cpu fan stopped up but dirt and dust was caked in between all the fins in the cpu heatsink. it took me 10 minutes to dust the damn thing out.
Only 10 minutes??? I had a dual P133 server that was hiding from me over in another building...NEVER been cleaned. It took me a good 2 or 3 hours to clean that thing out. I still have dust elephants running around my office and outside the front door.Quote:

That's NOTHING compared to the nasty stuff you get in the POS business. Italian places are the worst...
The oil they use actually floats around in the air, gumming up fans and everything else....and you should see the kitchen printers:uke:
Pretty close to the restaraunts in terms of disgusting buildup of crap are the PC's in the tollbooths of the bus parking lot my company runs... Monitors last less than 10 months, PC fans last about the same before replacement.
The beige parts are *YELLOW-Brown* within 3 months and are permanantly that color, but the overall worst is the layers of thick grimy oily stick CRAP all over everything... Yucko!

I had a woman bring in her unit that she kept beneath her parrots cage. Dont know if she put paper down or not - what a mess. Inside and out
I told her I couldnt do anything for it.
I've found that a large fine paint brush cleans alot of crap out very well :)
I just use the good ole' can of airQuote:

I wasn't to interested in having parrot poop all over the shop - and me
Yeah but those things get damn expensive after a while ( I should look into getting a compressor so I can refill my own :D )Quote:

not really dirty, but still funny.
customer brought us a scanner that dosn't work. software gives a scanner motor error.

I'll take a pic of the keyboard on the pc in my workshop next time I'm round my folks place. Lucky I can touch type, cause you can't see anything for oil (including the LED's).
We purchased an air compressor to clean our customer's computers. Crank it all the way up and you won't have any worries.

Unless you have asthma ;)
I have the dust bunny that other dust bunnies send 15% of their income to under my raised tile.
That's funny, the place I am at now the last guy went out and bought a compressor and a reservoir tank, so he could clean PC's in quite. I never laughed so hard in my life; it was like $250+ worth of stuff. I could have had caned air for life. 6 months now, and I have never used it. I still have the same can of air from the day I started.Quote:

Wish I'd had a camera Wednesday ... a PC that bore a striking resemblance to the bottom picture GokuSS2 posted came into our shop. The user said sometimes it would boot but usually not. When we pulled it apart (horizontal desktop-style) the space between the motherboard and bottom of the case was filled with carmelized coffee (at least three creams and three sugars from the smell) that was shorting out the motherboard.
I'm still not sure how they got it in there, maybe knocked over a cup and it splashed in from the front air-vents, but they did get it in there with the expected catastrophic result.
Unfortunately corporate IS took it with them when they brought the replacement since they could salvage some of the components.
The worst one I have ever seen was from a family who smoked constantly, the fan stopped working because the tar buildup on it gummed it up. I think I got cancer from just touching it.
Dust, I have seen. Lots of dust. You couldn't tell what the components were because there was so much dust. Thick, black dust.
And smoker's PCs are a pain to clean out.
This one's not bad:

I guess you dont get very many cleaning jobs (1 can of air HA)Quote:

I can use a can cleaning out a computer without a problem and I dont waste it either.

K7SEM - no big loss :D :D
not for me or you, but when it costs the customer a motherboard, processor, cpu,cup hsf, memory (new board only takes ddr) and case fan + labour, it gets kinda expensive. about $400 type of expensive.Quote:

good thing they decided to buy a new computer rather than fix this one, they made a salesman very happy today.

i got the NASTIEST pc i have ever worked on in my life yesterday. i tried like hell to find a digital camera but no luck. Ok here it goes, i work in a hospital and i know what you are thinking, "how can a pc get dirty in a hospital, aren't they supposed to be super clean?" LOL THINK AGAIN!!!! Man this pc was a p100 back from 1995!!! i dont think this thing was ever opened up and has been sitting under this nasty desk all of its life. they started complaining saying it locked up and was slow so i checked it out and it had only 16mb of ram. so i went to upgrade it to 64mb but when i opened the case holy @#$$% there was at least 1 inch think super nasty dust covering the whole pc. and wouldnt you know it we had just run out of compressed air. After it was all said and done the pc was clean, i gagged a few times and almost lost it but the memory was upgraded and i inadvertedly transplated that dust from the pc to my clothes, every bit of it . i looked like a giant cotton ball! those clothes must be burnt now, but that pc flies :D
