ADSL modem won't set up!

I have a Conexant ADSL modem router. I'm not sure if I can give much more info about it because the manual that came with it doesn't even tell me that much - I got that from Device Manager. Ooh. It appears to be made by eTEC.
Anyhoo, I'm not sure how to get it to work. It has a crap manual which tells you how to set the router mode for static IP with DHCP function and bridge mode with DHCP function, and which wires to put in the back, but basically nothing else.:mad:

I've installed it anyway and I now have a Conexant USB Network Adapter and a Conexant USB Network Interface in Device Manager. I have also downloaded and auto-setup file to create an Internet connection file, whioch I have done but it wants to use my dial-up modem for this which obivously will not work.

I'm not sure what to do next. I seem to have hit a brick wall.

Any help HUGELY appreciated...

Thank you! It's not that exact model, but it has the same (or v. similar) config interface. Anyway, I ran the diagnostic test and it has a full connection. I foudn that I hadn't entered the PPP settings.

Now how do I get my Windows XP to recognise that I can connect to the internet through this thing?

now, if windows get's an IP without special software (meaning standard DHCP), your going to need to go through the intenet connection wizard, set your connection to internet, manual, cable/always on without password/lan. That should do it :)

if its very similar you set your IP range on the router and then enable DHCP and NAT if you use it.
Within windows set its TCP/IP properties to autodetect or manually apply an IP/Subnet/Gateway then within ICW set use local network and the browser to use the proxy server if you have one.

I'm sorry, guys but I have just got a chance to try it out nd found that I don't have an Internet Connection Wizard. I m using XP home (upgraded from ME) and I do have a connection wizard, but it tries to connect to "micro$oft internetbreferral service" and i think this is left over from ME, because I looked on another XP machine and there isn't one.

Any other suggestions? nsorry, i should have mentioned i was using xp.

umm, did you try the option to set up the connection manually? This computer is connecting via a router, therefore it is connecting via the lan, not a dialup connection as such.

im sorry, bit thick...coould you tell me how to set it up manually?
Wndoze XP is so full of wizards it;s hard to do anything using the old-fashioned Mk1 Brain. :)

Go to start/control panel/ then if you have the control panel set at category view, choose network and internet connections..if you have your control panel set at classic view, choose internet options.
If you use category view (the xp default) then choose set up or change your internet connection..if you use classic view, choose the connection tab under internet options. Either way, you're at the same place. at the top is a button for setting up a new connection. Follow the wizard through..picking the appropriate options, such as connect through a lan or an internet connection that is always on..when you are done, on your dial up connection tab, make sure the "never dial a connection" box is checked. try that
(whew;) )

Open the ms-dos prompt window, from C:\> type ipconfig so it looks like this "C:\>ipconfig" without the quotation marks and then hit enter. If you see an IP Address of 192.168.XXX.XXX and an IP Address of 192.168.XXX.XXX for the default gateway, your getting assigned an IP from your modem.

Then you could try starting Internet Explorer, let it finish trying to find a web-site and display "web page could not be displayed". Then click on tools, internet options, connections, LAN Settings then click automatically detect settings, apply, OK. Close IE and then restart IE.

XXX - could be 0 through 254

If you have an IP address assigned to your system and still cannot connect to the internet, you'll have to contact your ISP for the correct settings for your modem.

Oh yeah, if you have a software firewall enabled, disable it. Sometimes they can stop you from connecting without prompting you for permission.

At the moment I appear to be connected to the internet. However, Windows is not using any of the connections that are set up in Network Connections. Also, it seems that IE is the only program that recognises the connection.
It is also slow: about the speed of a dial-up although itb has the upload speed of 236k (i got these results from the online speed test at adslguide.org).

Strange eh? any explanations and help on how to get working properly much appreciated.

Also, I keep getting an error 678 when i try to connect by clicking on the shortcut to the connection settings i made. This was before this strange ghostly connectio to the internet appeared...That has only just started.

Does the modem give an indication of internal IP connections and external conection speeds in the explorer interface ?

Have you ticked all the "show icon in taskbar when connected" boxes on all the network connection properties?

Do you use a proxy or software firewall on your system as they can interfere with the connection if not set correctly?

Under XP pro the Network setup wizard is %SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe hnetwiz.dll,HomeNetWizardRunDll

You shouldn't have to click on anything to connect if you're using a aDSL modem. Once you power up the DSL modem it should connect automatically. Check out this link, it might help you. http://www.anzwers.org/free/xpdsl/ethernet678.htm

Not in the UK

It sets up with a dun connectoid where the number dialled is 0 and your user and password is required.

I am not sure if I can take some of the advice put on the website such as "uninstall your network card" becasue I need it to connecto the router. Just a reminder that its a router, not a straight plug-in modem. :)

OK lets clarify what exactly your getting.

You IE ADSL interface is showing an internet connection and the lights on the Modem/Router are showing a good connection?

You have set a range of IPs in the IE ADSL Interface for your home network?

You have set a static IP/Subnet/Gateway in your PCs network TCP/IP settings and ticked the show connection box ?

Does it show as per this http://www.farina1.com/amx/frontpage.jpg any connections to the router from the PC?

Does it show a good connection to the internet as per these ?http://www.farina1.com/amx/adslstatus.jpg

BTW Not meaning to be simplistic but ........you should enter the user/password in the IE ADSL inteface not on the PC the Modem/Router connects to the internet you connect to the Router.
You Dont need a dial up connection as you are essentially connecting to a LAN connection so you only need a Network connection on the PC.

In the US you set your modem to connect automatically when powered up. Usually by going into the modems setup interface through IE by typing its fixed IP address, something like 192.168.XXX.XXX. Then the modem prompts you for a username and administrator password. Once you"re into the setup of the modem you enter the protocol, for my ISP it's PPPoE/LLC then the virtual circuit IDs. which are 8 for the VPI and 35 for the VCI. Then it asks for the username and password for the ISP. Once all data is entered into the modem and saved, its stored until you hit the reset button. Every time the modem gets powered up it goes through an initiallization process then automatically connects if all said info above has been entered and saved correctly.

I think NooNoo may be confusing it with the USB version [like the BT frog] which uses a dial up connection within windows.
The ADSL Modem /Router is self connecting on reboot or by using the inbuilt interface the PC using a LAN connection.

sorry i've been so sporadic replying.... i have now reached a window in my work so will be able to devote more time to this. io have discovered that I am gettign a connection, but it has nothing to with windows... i have 'show icon when connected' selected but this doesn;t appear. it works with IE and some other apps (Half-life, winmx) but not Outlook Express...
Also, it seems slow. on my last post i got 40kbps but now im getting 75kbps (according to an online speed test). is this becasue i have the modem configured incorrectly? most strange....

check otu this from my web interface vfor the modem. i can guess what it nmight meawn but im nto sure...
but it'll probnably mean something to you guys

ok it;s too big to attach but it says 'Data Rate 588' and '288 kbps.' under adsl status

Sounds like you have 512kbps down and 256kbps upstream. If you're still having problems with bandwidth, contact your Internet Service Provider for the correct settings for your modem. Be sure to be sitting behind your computer while you're speaking with them so you can go step by step with their tech support representative. Another thing you have to consider also is how far you are from their service. If you're riding on the boarder of their "18,000 feet of wire limit"(so I've been told by Sprint), that could be causing your trouble. Or if you are living in an area where there are a lot of people using DSL, that could bog you down too. There's a bunch of variables that could be causing you troubles, but the first thing you should do if you are unsure about the settings for your modem is to contact your ISP. Your ISP can also help you configure Outlook Express, their tech support is there to help you resolve what ever issues you're having with their service.
