I think if you use the manufactures utility to set it up, it should not be a problem at all and can work as a single 80gb partition (Without dyanamic overlay of course - which is bad)
Also, forgot to mention...there is already a 10GB partition...
fdisk on the 98se startup diskette, or use the drive manufacturer's drive installation utility...
The 10 gig partition already has windows on it? If so, you need a third party partitioning tool, such as Powerquest’s partition magic. Otherwise, FDisk, format, reinstall, Doodaa, doodaa…Quote:

ummm,. we talking about one 80gig drive C: ? That case you need partition magic or similar (if you cannot scrap that partition) to resize it.
Or are we talking about making multiple drives out of the 80 gig?
If there is an os, then run fdisk from start, run, command box
If there isn't run fdisk from a startup diskette
You need an extended partition first, then chop it up however many times into logical partitions - which will actually become your drives.
I tried fdisk already, but it only shows a 12GB drive...also tried from inside windows...same deal. This guy is supposed to pick up the machine tomorrow, so I am kinda in a hurry.
edit: He wants an extended partition so that he doesn't lose everything if his kids hose the system...
This is the way I usually do it, but it's been so long since I set up 98...I can't remember how to get it to recognize the rest of the drive. Should I just tell it to use the maximum available and hope that it works that way...?Quote:

It almost sounds like you have a BIOS limitation here causing this. I didn't remeber it being at 12 gig though.
In Fdisk, is it showing 100% used, and only 12 gig reported?
Well, I wouldn't expect a board with the nForce2 chipset to be limited like that...when I use fdisk it does show usage stats concurrent with a 12GB drive, but when I tried a demo 3rd-party program, it reported the unused 68GB...Quote:

Something is wrong here then. I say delete all partitions, reboot and creat one partition with a boot disk. If you have time that is...otherwise, tell them that 12 gig is all they will ever need...:pQuote:

Unfortunately he knows better...and like I said, he wants more than one partition...I know it can be done because I did it before...I just don't remember how.
Let's revisit this one more time. There is one partition on an 80 gig drive, new mobo, and the partition is only showing as 12 gig in FDISK, and it reads 100 percent utlized? So there is no room for you to add and extended partition using the conventional FDISK? Man, something is a miss...What mobo? Is it possible you need to update the BIOS? How about the drive, have you tested it for reliability with the manufactures software?
You are running out of time I gather, so you better try something quick, or tell this guy to wait a few more days…
There is a FDISK (and not only) issue with HDD's over 64GB. See this MSKB article:http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;263044
Partition Magic will do the job much better than fdisk and you can resize and move partitions... just make sure you run a scandisk and shutdown clean before playing... and if you have a spare drive make a backup copy of whatever you have.
Well...looks like I need to shell out.....probably a good idea to be prepared for the eventuality of this happening again. Thanks to all who helped (esp. Kato & CeeBee) As long as I have it done by tomorrow it should be ok...his kid's birthday isn't until friday or saturday.Quote:

Hey man, I told you in my first post about Partition Magic being a way out, I want special recognition too!!!:DQuote:

What about the downloads from the MSKB article? Can't you use those? If the guy wants two partitions anyway, leave windows where it is, update FDISK (BTW good find CeeBee, I never heard of that issue before now) and partition the extended partition...

So, all antics aside, did you try the download from Microsoft? Seems to me, if you installed in 98, then created a new startup floppy, it would copy the new version of FDISK to the floppy, if not, you could manually copy it down to the floppy. Then you could remain the cheep skating jarhead you always wanted to be!
Boy, I tell you, I wish I knew a dude in your unit. I would have him lock your a$$ on for the above. You'd be field daying the common areas of the barracks for the next 3 weeks, every night and standing JOB’s in a different uniform every night too. I would put you through the gas chamber without a filter, and make you sing two verses of the Marines Hymn. I’d use candle wax with the CS, just to make it that much more unbearable…(used to be legal in the MC, not anymore. But you might find a few salty dogs doin’ it still)…
Ahhhh, the good old days, when you could reach into someone’s chest and really make them miserable…
Who says I pay for software??? It's sometimes nice to have a legal copy...(like with Diablo II or Half-life) but I haven't bought anything for a while... and my main machine has...well, let's just say it's not out of date.Quote:

BTW - I haven't had a JOB in over 1 1/2 years...good luck trying to get me to field day the barracks(my wife would kill whoever tried that) and unless you can do better than they did in boot camp(I had a runny nose) we'll just bring the keg in the chamber and sing drinking songs all night. Sir. ;)
Oh, a P!$$!NG contest.Quote:

We used to pull guys from base housing all of the time to do field day at the barrack when they screwed up. The wife’s couldn't say a damn thing about it, because you are on duty 24/7. And just to be sure you and I are on the same sheet of music, a JOB (Junk on Bunk) inspection every night, while standing in inspection uniform minutes after having performed a barrack field day ain’t a walk in the park, especially when I am conducting the inspection!
As far as the gas chamber, when you went through boot camp, (you gotta be a Hollywood Marine to boot) the rules in the chambers had already changed MC wide. When I went through, and when I trained Marines, we used to take off our masks entirely; then on command don and seal. If you went through with just the “crack the seal briefly” routine, you don’t know what CS actually tastes like…Trust me! I once licked my bare hand after breaking a capsule into the burner. I couldn’t taste food for the rest of the day, but I was the last man out of the chamber without my mask on. Running noses…sh!t, I used to have Sergeants Major running for the door because we kept it so hot in the room. In MOPP 3 you can’t tell rank, and we stopped them all to keep them inside and finish the training. When they left, they all had their masks on right, sealed, but still crying from the residue for 10 more minutes after…
You would lose to me in a pissing contest; you’d be best to go pee up a rope!
Actually, you would have a tough time getting me to stand duty at the barracks here...there isn't one. We have a guard shack...but no real common areas.Quote:

NOW...as far as that hollywood Marine crap - BITE YOUR TONGUE. PI Bred - Through and Through. And yes, I did hold my mask out in front of my face while the DI walked around the chamber...yes I did hold the seal broken for the same length of time(I'm a tall guy, so I was at the end of the line)
And like I said, I haven't had a JOB since I was at 29 Palms...over 1 1/2 years ago...
edit: Oh, and just for example, I (a LCpl) have told LtCol's and Col's that their email could wait, I was working on something more important.
So what does all this have in common with the hdd issue??? Another hijacked thread that should be locked...:uke:

Ceebee, you never see some people sort out their credentials? :D ;)
PI, you're all good! I misjudged. And a tall guy in a gas chamber usually had it worse than the rest, especially if they used candle wax on the burner. So again, you're all right. But I would still have you doing pushups for a while...Afterwards, to the E-club to buy you a beer!Quote:
