I'd like to upgrade my processor on my PC.
I've currently got a celeron 450. Not sure what my mobo will upgrade to though. How can I find out?

Easy! post the specs of your motherboard in this thread and wait!
Somebody should be able to tell you the 'fastest' cpu that'll run on your MB :)

Celeron 450? No such CPU my friend. Looks like you have one of the 300A celerons overclocked. Chances are good you have a BX or ZX board. If it's ZX, your out o luck, it will only support mendecino and katmai CPU's, if it's a BX board, it MAY (depends on bios rev and company) support the coppermine CPU's, if that's the case, you can go up to a P3 1000E (remember, no 133 bus)
Had a look at the board and see no serial numbers etc.
Where can I look to find out make etc.
The PC is a Compaq.
Whats the Compaqs make and model?

Doubt it....
<a href="http://www.hwupgrade.com/motherboard/slot1_comparison/index22.html" target="_blank">Celeron 450 benchmark test results</a>
<a href="http://www.stormpages.com/starshine/prothbench.html" target="_blank">more benchmarks</a>
Mind you if compaq managed a 150% overclock.... :D
Often there is info on the m/b besides serial numbers like multiplier tables and FSB speeds, contained in little tables (almost always in white) any of those....
Read this <a href="http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum3/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=001043&p=" target="_blank">Motherboard id</a>
This explains about BIOS strings, post that if you can glean no more info from the board... :)

The first link, has part of the intro, they stated that they overclocked CPU's and give a list of CPU's that they used.. 300A was there but no 450... Hmm.. you can see the list <a href="http://www.hwupgrade.com/motherboard/slot1_comparison/index3.html" target="_blank">here</a>
That second link you have, EVERY single celeron 450 is a 300A overclocked..(look in the notes colum)
Also if you look <a href="http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sspec/icp.htm" target="_blank">here</a> there is no celeron 450 accoding to Intel.
The mendecino core was a CPU the Intel NEVER released on the 100 Mhz bus. That cpu IS overclocked (or under clocked)
Agree with Matridom here. There never has been a 450Mhz Celeron mass produced by intel. There have been pre-release samples without multiplier locks and this processor could possibly be one of those. As for the board upgrade question, you should be able to put any fcpga celeron 1 in your board(533Mhz $27) but again, I recommend like many others here that you do some research on your board to find out for sure.

yup, the 533 would be the highest for sure, but a 450 overlcocked will perform almost the same (100 Mhz bus vs 66 Mhz bus). You could also more than likely go with a P3-600 (no E, no B - hard to find) I'd look well into the board and see what chipset it has... there should be two large chips on the mobo with Intel logos, just post the numbers here...
its a Compaq deskpro
there is a sticker on the mobo with a bar code of somesort.
I can read dw#010178 on it
is this any help guys

Uhm, not really.. get numbers off any of the large IC's.. also, what Model of Compaq deskpro?
doesn't say which version on deskpro it is anywhere.
it has 5 pco slots
2 isa slots
2 dimm slots
2 ide
xu1 processor socket
2 usb
where else can I try
sorry to be vague
bit more info courtesy of tweak xp
celeron 466mhz chip
original oem
stepping 5
Well i think that your Out o luck...
Unless you can get the model number, there is no way to know if there is a bios update to support coppermine. Since you can't tell, then error on safety and say a p3 -600 katmai (512k cache)
If your running at 466, you should see a good boost. Also remember that you may need to get pc100-133 ram. (your ram may only be pc66)
you mean the model number for the PC or the model number for the mobo?

Well, the model of the PC would allow you to search the compaq website for updates.... The model of the mobo would be useless
think its a compaq deskpro en or en spacesaver
ok
had a look on compaq website they have reference to a compaq deskpro en spacesaver C466/810 (think thats a 466 processor with onboard 810 graphics chip) which mine is.
Theres lots of bits of software for download including something called active update that monitors your pc and checks for updates to bios etc.
What is it that I'm looking for?

810 chipset.. Forgot about that one.. Any coppermine CPU with 100 mhz bus is good. You'll want to update your bios though. do that BEFORE upgrading the CPU.
I've looked for a bios upgrade but can't find one.
I ran a compaq util program (see below)
Product . . . . . . . . . . Deskpro EP Series
Board ID . . . . . . . . . . 55C
System ROM Info from DMI
Bios Vendor's Name . . . . Compaq
Bios Version . . . . . . . 686J1 v1.10
Bios Release Date . . . . 12/08/1999
Where can I find a bios upgrade and what do I need to do when I find it?
sorry 061070 been watching this thread continuing ,instead of playing "hunt the 100mhz" chip upto xxxmhs ,,why not just go into local dealer and buy cheapest "jetway" board -then go to "pcworld" and buy a "duron" 800 for £29.95 ,,,and transfer all your bits over.
or buy a top branded board intel/amd ,,,buy the cheapest cpu and run it till u can afford 1.9xp or simular intel.
I put "this" machine together (asus) with a duron 800 about 3 mths ago ,,,,,with the intention of upgrading the cpu (when i could afford it).
after 3 mths ive decided that the 800 is "adequate" for it,s usage , and i aint gonna change it!!!!
freddy.
061070, just updated it to the latest..
I did some diginig at the intel web site..
810 is a PPGA form factor.. meaning that if your board actualy has a sockeet type connector for your processor your are SOL.. your max will be a Celeron 533(not A). Now, i don't recall 466 celerons comming is slot A (i could be wrong) so beein a PPGA board you won't even be able to look at a P3.... (p3 require FC-PGA)
After reading this, take Freddy's suggestion and get yoruself an inexpensive duron system.
FYI, PPGA and FC-PGA both use a 370 pin socket and are NOT compatible.
