For those of you who know me, (you know who you are), and what I have been doing and even more recently – this should make a little sense.
I just don’t get it. As my business continues to grow, I am finding more and more customers who have had their machines serviced by another tech who leaves them - piece milled together . edited by self.
Do people not take pride in their work?

This is probably the same guy who can undercut your rates by 50% and therefore gets the call by a client just because he's cheaper.
Probably not interested in keeping his clients either.
Look at it this way Jim when people see how good of a job you do your business will continue to grow and flourish. :thumbs2:

BTW, anybody who does that kind of thing ought to be sued for malpractice....:p

Merged and tidied up Poseidon.... just enjoy the business. If you meet the guy, don't say a word, after all he will vanish under the weight of his own ineptitude pretty soon. :)
Just ran into that situation yesterday.
Friend of the wife's had a PC problem, she went to "a friend of a friend who's in the business" to get it fixed, he had the PC for a week, said it was a bad hard drive, ended up soaking her for $300, and the PC still wouldn't work right.
I decided on the spur of the moment to look into it.
Reported problem: PC runs slow, or hangs in applications.
The fix: Vacuum the dust bunnies out of the CPU heatsink, and reseat a NIC that wasn't in it's slot properly.
Total time for me to fix: 5 minutes, tops.
I'd hate to be working for THAT guy when the word gets out...
I find the cause of the problem is stupid cheap a$$ customers who take their computer problem to the newest, cheapest place in town expecting them to work a miracle. The crummy shop they take it to ends up having to cut corners because they are trying to get started in the biz and they don't want to get a reputation for turning work away because they don't know what they are doing.

At my shop, we have a slogan. 'We repair what the other guy fixes.' And we have a lot of loyal customers because we take the extra step. Sometimes we lose profit because of the extra effort we put in, but we stay pretty busy quite regularly.
One of my favorite customers is a guy who got screwed by another shop and came to us. We kept his PC running for him until the day it finally kicked of old age. And you know what? He bought his new computer from us instead of Best Buy or Circuit City. He's only had to bring it in once for a virus in the 18 months he's owned it to. More people come in on his recommendation than anyone elses that I know of.

Funny I work with a guy that, on Friday, our super took the day off for a long weekend. The whole time that he should have been upgrading users from 95 to 2000 he was showing these guys down the hall where to find porn and he wasted 30 minutes of my day discussing President Bush's policy! I finally just walked away from him.
On top of it all, he is pretty incompitent. I have been working at this place around 2 weeks and he has been there for 2 years. I am getting work over him because people don't like his work, and this fella is coming to me with questions!
Our super is constantly talking smack on him and more than 5 people have said he does mediocore work. I just grin and smile. I hate to talk bad on people in the work place. This is a good place to vent though.
My wife suggested that I should bring up the porn thing to my super, but I would just feel like a RAT. I can't do that.
As I see it, if he continues this type of work, they will eventually catch on and kick him anyway.
It's similar in the corporate world. A handful of people who help to keep the whole show running and a ton of people who glom on and do useless things.
I work keeping entire site running on frame relay circuits, fixing issues and setting up new ones. Last year we had to start using ISDN for small sites with only 1 PC. The group in charge of getting those sites up and running worked with dial up for years before so this shouldn't be such a chore, it's not sooo different. Well, nary a site gets set up now without intervention from me because I chose to go above and beyond and actually fix the simplistic issues they have rather than keep turning the issues back to the group that is supposed to fix them.
My reward is that that group things I'm a condescending ba$+ard for fixing the things they couldn't. If I tell them how to fix things properly I'm "condescending".
Actually doing a good job is it's own reward that most of folks doing those pi$$ poor jobs will never understand. That sound's elitist but I don't care. It's the damn truth.

I know exsactly what you mean, I work with a tech, %#$@ I have called them many times on this about doing a half @$$ed job working with stuff, then many times I had to talk to the customer when they picked it up and pointed out the fact it was a half @$$ job, so at that point I have to drop everything to fix what they should have done in the first place!

I definately understand what you mean, firemonkey. That is one of the hardest part of public tech work, having to look at a customer when they bring in their computer for redo's on a very regular basis. When I worked as a tech, we had 2 techs (lets call them Tatoo and "The Round Mound of Sound") that had over a 30 percent comeback rate for 3 months straight. The worst part is that it makes you look bad by association. It also sux to have to work even harder to get your workload done plus babysit them. When they are driking buddies with the managers, all hopes of them being canned are gone. :sad:Quote:
