try opening your internet browser and click on tools> internet options> advanced. drop down to multimedia and check box for play sounds for web pages. also do you have real player or windows media player installed. you need a player to play video sounds and video clips.
This still didn't solve the problem. Do you have any other suggestions?Quote:

good point Doc. Are your speakers plugged into the right jack in the sound card?Quote:

You might also go into safe mode, press f8 when booting, and look under device manager. See if the card is listed correctly or multiple times. Just some things to check.
I didn't install the sound card drivers. I can only find one under device manager and it is called MPU-401 compatible. I don't hear sounds from within windows.Quote:

you still don't have sound card drivers installed. MPU-401 is for midi devices. You could first have windows do a seach for new hardware. If it finds your card have drivers ready. If not remove mpu from device manager and let windows find it again on restart. Have your drivers ready. It should pick up your gameport also. you know you did it right when you have the little speaker showing next to your clock.
OK we need to know your sound card to get you the right driver.
Is this a branded machine such as a compaq or hp or emachine? If so, please tell us the make and model number.
If you don't know or its not a branded machine, go to www.belarc.com and download the free personal audit, run the report and post the results here. It will also put up all your licence numbers, please remove those from the post.
When we have that information we can start on the serious help and get your sound sorted out.
Hey I ran the audit and now I just need to know what results you need me to post. Thanks for helping me.Quote:

OK Its a pc chips... Hsing Tech Enterprise Co is the holding company for these boards. There is not quite enough information here to make an absolute identification, but I am willing to bet that this is what you need if the sound is onboard. here is the installation instructionsQuote:

In order to make a better guess I will need the system model that you didn't post as well as how many pci and isa slots belarc detected.
i'm having the same problem, heres my Belarc advisor results

Links are there for all your drivers, the manual and bios updates. You dont need a bios update unless you have a problem that has specifically been solved by the update.
Hey I was just answering that ... give me a chance :D
(You got 'teh greeter' job back now .. ! ;))
Just to explain Noo's 'brilliance' she googled this bit (as I think its often a mystery to folks how she does it)..
.. but she does it so much nicer (& flipping quicker) than I do ! {hey there's no grovelling icon ! :eek2: }Quote:

thanks for the advice but i got it fixed on another kool site.
Well no doubt we are all very glad for you  .. so maybe somebody there read these symptoms better than we did (which is all we can do - if many of us were 'there' we'd fix it straight off but we are only as good as you tell us, there's probably lots of other things you think are unrelated, which we never knew about which might have helped ..)Quote:

lol, yea sure heres the site that helped http://pcpitstop.ibforums.com/index....=&#entry462576
Ta ! :) ... I see they told you to use aida32 instead of belerac advisor (to diagnose its 'inards' & find the s/c chipset) - I think/hope we caught onto the fact that belerac is only as good as the chipset info it has available, & that though it reports less aida can work without that info - so its 'better' .. we touched on that one in another thread the other day .. more proof ! ;) :)

One day when I'm not so confus-ed this might all make sense ... it is indeed a circular reference ! - awww hell its fixed ! that'll do ! :DQuote:

YAMAHA OPL3-SAx WDM Driver
This site: http://ussa.supremeserver14.com/supp...7872a5a6e7daf4 covers a similar issue with those drivers:
To paraphrase them:
Go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager, Sound Video and Game Controllers. Unless you see "YAMAHA OPL-3SAx sound systems" or "YAMAHA OPL3-SAx WDM Driver" with a "?" or "!" in front of it, the driver was installed correctly.
Go to "Control Panel, Multimedia and make sure the preferred device selected for Playback is "YAMAHA OPL-3SAx Playback" or "YAMAHA Audio."
Go to volume control to adjust the sound card's volume to the max position.
Thanks...I followed your instructions and the driver appears to be installed correctly. But under multimedia the playback function is greyed out.
When you reloaded 98, you did install chipset drivers FIRST?
Then video and then sound and internet stuff?
You didn't relocate the sound card? (if it's onboard I guess you didn't)
I haven't played with 98 for quite a while - try reading through this (the answers are wayyyy down at the bottom:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/M...l?qid=21038336
edit: other options I read about:
Try going into Add/Remove Programs > Windows Setup and remove Multimedia and reboot. Then return and re-install it.
or
Safe mode allows you to see old drivers and hardware so you can remove them.
If you are sure that you have the right driver, boot into safe mode instead of normal mode. Look at device manager and expand the multimedia/sound section. Look for any ghost devices and delete them altogether. You can opt to blow away all your multimedia stuff from safe mode and then reboot into normal mode. This will give you another chance to install fresh drivers with no (possibly old) conflicting drivers that you just removed from safe mode.
