Rant: Of all the ungrateful things...

How utterly annoying!

Once a year we get a bonus from our head office in the US. If our company does really well, we get a pretty fair bonus (sometimes as high as 4-5% of our yearly income).

This year, we didn't get a very big bonus, because we didn't do well on the whole. Our bonus this year is just under 2%.

What burns my butt, is the fact that some people in our manufacturing plant are griping about the low bonus. My response to anyone who whines: "Hey...it's found money! Not everyone gets bonuses!"

They think it's so low it's an insult. They have the nerve to say "I should just give it back!". I say give it back!! Means more money in the company kitty, which means bigger bonus next year.

How many of you folks get a bonus where you work? Do people usually gripe about it, if you do get them?

We have a yearly bonus that is pretty much relied on here as a big part of our salary. As long as you do decent in your reviews it is 10%, which really is nice since most of our salaries are so low.

I get $100 at christmas.... that's about it... two jobs tho so $200... meh... it helps pay for the gifts...

I guess that's what really bothers me. We have excellent benefits, and our wages (for those on the hourly scale) are pretty decent. Most people here start at about $10/hr, or higher. The average worker makes $12-13/hr. So it's really not looked on as part of our wages here....just found money.

Around here, it's pronounced "Bone Us".

When the economy fell the bonus went the way of the dodo. It was a pity to watch the people who counted on it for Christmas money that first year. Found money alright!

Luckily people in my office always plan on no bonus and see it as extra money. No complaining here. They range from 5% to 15% annual salary. (yeah, 15%, I almost passed out.)

This year it was 10% and people were dancing in the halls. Even 2% would make people happy. The benefits are great and the company is just generous and realizes the value of morale.

Athough our raise this year was only 4%. Not very exciting, especially when you calculate the health insurance cost increase. I'm still taking home the same as last year.

Techincally the company can give out SQUAT for a bonus. A bonus is a "bonus" - i.e. extra money.

Does your company have any openings?

...and yes, at most of the places I've worked, bonus was actually two words. The pricks who just fired me were so-so. The first time Christmas came around while I worked there, I was the only tech for the area, and was esentially starting this office from nothing. I got $300. This time I got $100, and I don't even remember '02.

a raise and a bonus, I remember those things. Came in a little white envelope with a letter saying how valuble you are and how you did a great job helping the company that past year. Been a long time since I have seen either of those.

hehehehe, my first xmas I was still a contract so I couldn't technically under contract rules take a bonus, they slipped me $250 under the table.

Last job though, we got a bbq dinner, luckily they had it on different days at the different sites, so our boss let us go do "work" at the other sites. Then the next year, no bbq for anyone.

You've got to negotiate those bonuses at the start of every year and get it in writting. Spell out goals and how much you expect to get for reaching them. I'm amazed how many people just walk into a job and say ok, I'll take x dollars per hour and that's that.

I used to get a bonus each year from my past employer and I never bitched about it. He made it clear it was based on performance, both personal and corporate; and I appreciated every penny I got.

At my new job no bonus, but they just completed a competitive review last year and decided they were too low compared to other employers. So I've gotten two unexpected raises in the last year and next month am getting a new retirement package with far better long-term benefits. :thumbs:

I don't get a bonus (I'm part time), but I've received plenty of raises since I've been here(going on four years in June) and I do get a gift certificate a Xmas.
This job is alot better than my other job (that's my bonus), great benefits even for part time!! :)

We OCCASIONALLY get bonuses here...based on bosses disgretion on projects and how well they went...its nice when we get em (even tho taxed at 40%)...Its still $ I didn't have/expect...just wish they were a lil more regularly...

I work out in the shop, only office people get bonuses.
No raise for the last three and a half years and no bonus at all! :(

Time to find greener pastures (too bad the job market here still sucks).

No raise? Is that even legal? Since cost of living goes up, don't they have to provide you at least with a cost of living increase?

Salary raises are limited to 2% here (used to be around 5% just few years ago). :sad: So whether you've been doing extremely well or just "ok" you get about the same. Xmas bonus has been about a week's pay... Does it mean that I'm among the lucky ones? :confused:

I'd seriously look at the labour laws for your state/city to find out if not even providing a cost of living increase is even legal. Over 3 years without any increase in cash, whatsoever, sounds a bit fishy to me.

That depends.... even if there is a law saying he needs to get a cost of living increase ( As far as I know there isn't ) If he works for a small business, alot of them are excused from laws like that to help them survive...

Maybe.. but where is the motivation? I've seen people in the shop working at half their potential... "the way they pay me is the way I work" - does it sound familiar? Even myself... I could be doing some more useful things instead of wasting my time on the windrivers forum ;)

We haven't had a raise in 3 years either. It must be legal since I work for the state. It sure isn't any fun though. :sad:

Man, that's really got to suck. I guess working for a huge company does have it's advantages at times. Some people here think they're trying to keep us happy so we don't talk about unions.

I guess I'm just tired of hearing, from the people that work in our manufacturing plant, all the whining of how little we got. I look at it this way: they didn't have to give it to us, so why b!tch about it when they do give it? Any money we're given over and above our wages, since we're not on commission, is found money. If it buys me a little something nice, or even just a tank of gas, it's more than most people get (by a long shot by the sounds of things), and we should be grateful.

I have a great idea since some want to not except the "little" bonus you got tell them to send it to us at windrivers who dont' get them and we'll distribute them to people who will appreciate it...

Now for a little story...

There were some steel workers who refused to accept the "tiny" raise they were given and went on strike.... This caused the company already in a tough situation money wise to fold now those people who averaged $40/hr now make $0.... Now wasn't that better than settling for a low raise !!!! :rolleyes:

You're preaching to the choir on this. I'm all for being grateful I have a job, never mind the extra money they want to give us.

I'd love to be able to take the money, my coworkers don't want, and spread it around here at WinDrivers! How cool would that be?

I realize that but, like you, hearing stuff like that makes me rant too!!!! If it gets too bad, feel free to spread that story around... it is true by the way though all the details aren't there and/or a little messed up...

I just got a raise from $8/hr to $9/hr... first raise I ever got...

I know in the US, the yearly cost of living increase is 3%. So if you get anything less than a 3% raise, you're actually going to lose money in the coming year.
So I translate my 4% raise into an actual 1% raise.

Sunshine: It's just as Shard92 says, I work for a small, family-owned business that's not bound by the same wage laws as a large, publicly-owned company. Also no union in the shop to negotiate cost-of-living increases. No 401k, just profit sharing (which has been doing badly for the last 3-4 years making it more of a loss sharing plan).
As far as no raise being fishy, you don't know the half of it! The "people up front" are doing okay....new/nice vehicles, big houses, vacation trips out of state/country, etc. The "people up front" consist of : the owner (semi-retired and living in Florida), the company president (the owner's older son), the vice-president/purchaser (the owner's younger son) and one of the salesman (not related, but the owner inexplicably loves the guy). All the rest of us are non-family and get crap pay and p!$$-poor treatment.
I could go on loud and long about bonehead moves made by management, certain salesmen getting ridiculous commision checks in spite of the fact that their orders cost the company instead of making profit and on and on and on.....suffice it to say that it's a frickin' miracle that the company is still in business.

We have a most excellent Bonus Program here where I work. This year it payed out right at 13½%. :thumbs2: It's called Sivulliqsi, which is Inuipaq word meaning teamwork (dog-sled terminology). It's based on 4 factors...production, shipping, environmental and safety. We meet at the end of the year and set our goals based on a 3 year running average and then try improve on those #'s. With production & shipping it's based on increases. With environmental it's better performance in certain criteria like reduction in permit violations, spills and other incidents. With safety it's all accidents with particular attention to Loss Time. We made 98.8% of our goals! We would have made 100% but we ran into a shipping problem in September and the ice came into our Port Facility before we could make our last shipment of zinc and silver concentrate. Last year wasn't so bad either it paid 10¼% This year so far so good, but we really won't know anything until our shipping season starts in late June (usually runs until early to mid October when the ice floe returns, 2003 being an exception).
