Any decent motherboard will do. See Asus, A-bit, MSI for decent motherborads though many will argure about who makes a good motherboard I'd bet few argue that Asus is one of the best. Also, AMD is a good choice as many an Adobe app will work 25% faster with them compared to Intel chips.
The thing you want to remember is that you need BIG/FAST hard drives, lots of RAM and a fast CPU. When editing the biggest killer is the speed so a nice CPU and lots of RAM is good but a video editing card will help a heck of a lot (see below). The other thing is storage space. I find that when editing that the footage and the way it is stored by the programs before you compile the final cut is a real space hog. A 5 minute video, once edited and saved can take up 20-40gb with raw footage and all the preview files that Premier generates. It's fine if you work on on thing at a time but it's really nice to save those preview files for as long as you can so that you can re-edit the file later on down the road.
A video editing card like this is a good buy too if you can afford it (It is seperate and distinct from the video card) -

What AMD chip are you looking to use anyway? XP or the 64 or the 64FX?
Werd!
xp home? spring for pro.
Also get the opteron (64bit) or a dual mp. a gig of memory is good (2 is better). But like ILTU said: BIG FAST hard drives. 3 sata's would be nice (an 60-80gb for os and programs and 2 120-250gb striped in raid 0 for performance).
I really don't want to do work today so I whipped this up reall quick on newegg. Not the biggest or the best but close enough. Hope this doesn't come off as a sales pitch for new egg or any particular product, I was just bored. I opend for a LOT of HDD space over the speed of 2 sata drives RAIDed and one 200gb IDE drive - just because. Threw on a cheap but good DVD burner so you can put your work on DVD to show people.

Now this is what I needed after a day that should have seen me following the sports and ended up working.
The basic computer is the clients and is XP loaded. I have beeen asked to update as the processor is showing its age ( thats two of us then). SO I am limited by what there is already. The client has only had XP home three months and would not bgo with an OS upgrade. So the motherboard and processor combination is where the works is. The graphics card is not wonderful but I haven't the details to hand.
Thanks for all comments so far I'm just printing things to read and I'll post with questions tomorrow.
But one to end with. What is "werd"? Its got me guessing and guessing..
I had to add my thanks to Ilovetheusers, now I'm going to sit and read it again.
The DVD drive I've earmarked already. I like the SATA but he'll go to only one drive but he's OKed a purchase. ( I should have been more specific in that I've been asked to rebuild rather than plain build the machine hence limitations)
The orignal machine is a WINME machinethat was got almost as a trial, he's got hooked and hence the need to change the machine.
My apologies, but I think you will like this small addition to your colloquial use of language.Quote:

I hope this clears that up and you were not guessing in the wrong direction! :)
Oh NO! I really am getting passed it. Balding, middle-aaged and now clueless.Quote:

PS Whatever happened to that rowdy ne-er do well Elvis-something-or-the-other?
These are designed for video editing, i wish i had the money :-)

I like the LCD displays, cool or what.....
$8000 just for the box.. the monitor(s) are extra and that doesn't include a dedicated vid editing card :eek2:
stability and the benefits of being able to plug it into a domain at some point in time. There are several other features that pro has the home does not (remote desktop is the first that comes to mind although it may not be applicable in this situation)Quote:

I have a P4 2.0ghz with 1gb ram and a athlon 1.2ghz with 512mb ram and the athlon will render almost as fast in premier 6.0/6.5 even after the patch for intel processors is put on it. Kind of ticked me off when I found out though I do love my p4 in general. If you buds having issues, have him post them, I'd bet if it's hardware it's not related to the CPU (and maybe we could help). Wait though, you're talking about video compression like Divx or Xvid aren't you? Don't know much about that or the tools for them.
bookmarkmns - the video card that is in the system is not the biggest problem with editing performance. If the card is really old then it could cause issues with the ability to render effects but if he's not complaining about it then he's probably OK.
Also, ME is a major issue, not having a stable OS while waiting for a video to render for 2 days and having an error pop up 5 minutes befre it finishes can be a real treat I can tell ya. Also limits you to FAT32 so no files bigger that 4.3gb which is also another PIA. Make sure the drives are NTFS to avoid that issue. Nothing like pulling a whole video off the camcorder instead of chopping it into 3 or 4 bits you have to hope edit together well later on. That and if the final DV file is to large it's tough S with FAT.
What type of video files does the person you are building the computer for want to use (e.g.Quote:

If all he wants to do is capture video to mp1, mp2, you should look into a video capture card that captures with hardware support.
I've tried a few of the capture cards with software rendering from avi to mpg. Those cards
tax the cpu to max.
I am currently using a Hauppauge PVR250 (a lot cheaper than the Matrox) to capture all my video from different sources (analoge only). I have also dumped all my Video software and use Ulead Video Studio.
This might seem to be crazy but it one of the fastest ways to go from capture to DVD with out all the extra steps required by Premiere or Media Studio Pro. I also have problems with the afore mentioned programs when editing or creating a DVD. They seem to lock up at various times, and there is no predicting when.
My mother board is a Asus P4C-800E Deluxe
Pentium P4 3.06 Ghz
1 Gigabyte RAM
Asus 9180 AGP Card
Hauppauge PVR250
I am very happy with the performance of the components and the speed creating DVDs. This setup is 40-50% faster than my old P4 2.4G computer. Hyperthread and hardware capture is what does the trick.
Well... for video editing I would certainly go with AT LEAST 1.5 Gig RAM, not 512MB, and the Corsair is a good choice, I have that set in my system at home. And I would go with a FX-51 Athlon, not a 2800+, just for the intensive work that is going to be done.Quote:
