Well, considering that Major Kong and I keep sidelining with discussions on Farscape and such, figgerd it would be a good idea to start a new thread.
If you have anything interesting, or just want to relay your scifi interests, den dis b de place to do it.

New B5 movie to be entitled "The Memory of Shadows"; Richard Biggs passed away on May 23rd, so don't expect to see any more of Dr. Stephen Franklin. :sad:

I was really disappointed at what happened in Starship Troopers 2. The way they made it like Alien just irked me, and took away from what I thought Heinlein's point was in the book.Quote:

Is anyone here a fan of Firefly?
If you don't know, Firefly was on FOX for all of 11 episodes in 2002 and was (unfairly) cancelled because it didn't attract that much attention.
The super simple description of the show would be to call it a 'Sci-Fi Western' but that really doesn't do it justice. It's closer to a Frontier Sci-Fi show.
I never even heard of it until after it was LONG GONE. And i had no interest in a show that was cancelled after a half of a season until some of my friends had me over to see the pilot on DVD. WOW was this a great show! After watching two more episodes i was hooked and bought the entire season on DVD at amazon.com. $35 for 14 hours of great TV + free shipping? Is there even a choice?
If you're not into Sci-Fi this show may still appeal to you, but i'd research it real fast first. On Amazon when i looked it up they had something like 600 reviews and every single one was 5 stars.... that kind of rating kind of makes you think 'This here's a spectacle that might warrant a moments consideration'.
Anyone here already a Browncoat?

Anyone remember Odyssey Five? It was abruptly cancelled by Showtime a few years back. They only showed about 12 episodes than you couldn't even find any info on what happened to the show.
Well, about a month ago INHD a high def cable station found 4 episodes that has been filmed but not shown. So out of the blue I am watching episodes I never knew existed of a long cancelled series. Sort of like them finding 4 more ST-Next Gen. episodes.
I would like to see "The Mote in Gods Eye" made into a movie.

I will watch I, Robot simply because I enjoy scifi, but from what I heard, it shares nothing with the Asimov collection of short stories that goes by that name. I don't have much hope for the movie really.Quote:

Much has been said about the boundless zest and endless generosity that was Richard Biggs.
No matter how much, how long or how hard we all try, we will never say enough to accurately describe the depth of his goodness or the extent of his compassion.
But not everything that he valued smelled of roses.
One day, shortly after Babylon 5 wrapped for good, Rick stopped by the studio. I recall that very few people were left in the building at the time. Rick stepped into my office seemingly thrilled to find a friendly face - and melancholy about the series coming to an end.
He asked me if it would be ok to go back to his beloved MedLab one last time.
It pained me to explain that MedLab had been disassembled the day before. He seemed heartbroken and rife with despair. It was as if he had missed the chance to say "goodbye" to MedLab.
Then I had a vorlonic moment - a flash of an idea - to help my friend.
I took Rick to the back of the stages where the mammoth dumpsters lie stuffed with scraps from a plywood space station. Without batting an eye, I climbed up and into the giant box of Babylon and starting digging for a memory. In short order, I emerged with two green plastic panels that made up the distinctive MedLab walls.
I'll never forget how speechless Rick was at that moment. He appeared to be filled with
a) anxiety about entering the empty stages ...
b) loss over the destruction of MedLab ...
c) elation from receiving the plastic panels ...
d) panic that Warner Bros. lawyers would come around the corner and arrest us for rummaging through THEIR garbage.
On that day - at that moment -I was able to give Rick Biggs an icon of his legacy. It was important to him, he appreciated it and he cherished all the memories it gave him.
Yep. I gave Richard Biggs a piece of trash. And he loved it.

Speaking of Farscape, even though I dont ever watch the show I got to meet that chick that was bald and blue. She was an absolute sweetheart. One of the nicest people you will ever meet. She was someone who really appreciated her fans.

Well I for one am looking forward to the Farscape mini-series. I too would like to see the Babylon 5 universe back on the airwaves.
As to the Ringworld movie I know it has been in the works for several years. If it is treated right it will be an excellent movie (as a note the newest Ringworld novel is out :thumbs: ) . There are actually several Niven novels that I think would make excellent movies:
1. Footfall
2. The Mote in God's Eye
3. The Integral Trees
4. Dreampark
I had once though that Destiny's Road would make a great movie, but on further reflection I'm not so sure.
Who mentioned the Berserker series? Oh yeah Commander Klarg. Yes I agree!!! :thumbs: :thumbs:
Another thought is for Pohl's Gateway and introduction further into the Heechee's.
Now that I'm on a roll I also nominate:

NO! I do not want those asshats in Hollywood butchering some of my favorite books. Ugh, I can guarantee the Foundation series would be rendered unrecognizable. The series might work as a miniseries on Scifi, but I wouldn't bet on it. Far too much of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress would be culled to make it movie length. Odds are they would spend 30 minutes on plot development and 90 on the part of the book that would benefit from major special effects (trying to avoid spoilers here).Quote:

A few of Niven's short stories would work, too. "Inconsistant Moon" comes to mind, perhaps even "Cautionary Tales".
Personally, I think Lucifer's Hammer would be good, just keep it true to the original story, no more Hollyweird "always a positive ending" crap. Deep Impact and Armageddon were effects movies, but story lines were hard to digest. Hard to believe in small comets that only take out a small portion of the Earth's surface.
Hey, it's brainstorm time: How about "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex" (a short regarding why Superman can't have kids)? Do it in pseudo-documentary form (hell, Moore would take that on, he's good at pseudo-documentaries :devil: ).

I can't see how Foundation would fare well as a movie or series - too deep for that little-old-aunt-in-Alabama and not enough "action".
That said, Foundation was the series that beat out Lord of the Rings, was it not?

Aw come on jaeger...Hollywood screws everything up, so why not give it a shot. I would see Foundation being more of a full fledged series. There's enough story in Harsh Mistress to make a good 90 minute fun movie.
Titan would be kewl as would Pern. How about some of the older classics:
Miller's A Canticle for Leibowitz could be doable, The Wanderer by Leiber could be a lot of fun, Way Station (Simak) would be kewl!.
Neuromancer (Gibson) would be interesting, Ender's Game I would see.
