window protection error

i need help. when i start window 98 se en normal way, it doesnt start and appear a message: error in the protection of windows, you must re-start windows.
i change before this problem the driver of my "adaptador de pantalla" sis 730, i think that it was the problen, and in safe mode of windows i remove it, but the problem continue.
other thing, in bootlog.txt appear this
loading device=c:\windows\command\display.sys
(logo disabled)
load succes=c:\windows\command\display.sys
what's means logo disabled?
i hope you can help me

Welcome to Windrivers g_colo

logo disabled I think means that the SIS splash screen is not shown.

How did you remove the driver in safe mode?

You should look in add/remove programs for the driver and remove it

Then change your display adapter to standard pci vga adpater.

Reboot to normal mode and install the driver that worked.

well, i try to what you say , but
i recive this message: message error: error in setuplib.dll
missing in: unistall.
i look the foldre that have sis 630_730 v2.03, and i try to run the unistall icon, but i have the same message.
what i have to do now?
i remove the sis from de list of display adapter, i may wrong?

You should not remove it, change it to a standard pci vga card. Then restart, then you can install the correct driver.

before remove it from de list i change to vga standart, because i sopuse that it could be run , but not.
now i looking for the driver in internet to replace the uninstall of the sis that make the error.
what do you sugest to me?

yes i downloaded the driver from sis, but i have it in a cd, but in safe mode i can't install it.
The owner of the computer intall another that not be the one that the computer need, that makes the computer work wrong.
i try to copy the setuplib.dll , but i can't unistall the driver.
i dont know, what i have to do now.
the drver from sis is to big, and y cant use a disket.

Sis zip all their drivers - did you unzip it before burning to a cd? Can you copy the files from the cd to a folder (eg c:\video) ?

yes i unzip(in my computer) before burn the cd... but i cant use it, because the safe mode of windows
i copy in a disket the file setuplib.dll of the driver that i download, not from the driver that the owner of the computer download.
but the same problem contunue.
i replace(copy) this file in windows\system because it was the place (unic) that i find this file.

You have to install the video driver in normal mode. You only do the removal/uninstall in safe mode.

If it won't boot to normal mode, then get your windows cd and put it in the cd drive. Now click start, click run, and type in

SFC
Click ok. and follow the wizard telling it to do a full scan.

If it still will not boot to normal mode then get your windows cd and do an install over the top of the existing windows.

Hello everybody, this is my first time here I have a big problem.

I got the same message that our buddy right above.

"windows protection error. you must restart your computer".

But the problem here is that I can't run it in safe mode. I mean it doesn't
show the usual options to choose normal , safe, etc. mode.

So I always got that message.

I don't have neither CD nor floppy drive in my computers (It is a cyber-caffe), so the only way to fix this problem, I think, is reboot into safe mode. But it is apparently impossible.

(What happened was that somebody tried to install another video driver and it was incompatible with that driver originally installed.)

Any suggestions? Please, this is a cyber-cafe and I need my computers running!!

Try restarting, and holding the Shift key down until you see the splash screen. This should get you into Safe Mode. If that doesn't work, you must use the F8 key just before the BIOS hands off to Windows.

Good luck. If you can get to safe mode with networking, you should be able to get resources to fix it.

Thanks but none of that worked. I held down the shift key, ctrl key, etc. none worked. F8 gets in the screen "your computer is ready to be shut down " (something like that, because my computers are set to portuguese).

Buy the way , what do you mean by "splash screen"?

Thank you very much.

The Splash screen is the one that says Windows 98 with the clouds on it. I have no idea how to bring up the boot menu in Portuguese, unfortunately, if F8 brings you to the shutdown screen.

Ok, so it simply doesn't reach the splash screen even if I hold down the shift key.

It is weird that no keys is working to bring up the screen with the options allowing to choose safe mode...

hi, i'm Pat_001.
I just registered today, so sorry if i'm a bit confusing. My friend and I were working on his computer at my place today. After the splash screen comes on, Windows (he has Windows Me) starts loading, but right after the desktop finishes loading (It asks to restore my active desktop), the screen goes blue and in the center it is written, "Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer. System Halted." It's kind of wierd because i did almost everything (including taking the entire computer apart, seriously) and i still couldn't get that message to go away. Do you have any ideas on how i can get that to dissapear and run Windows again? And what should i do to it? Should i keep Windows Me, or put XP on instead? I prefer XP (but it doesn't dtop the message). Or should i just fix the problem then change it?
