It's the hits to the site, not whether we can see the adverts.
Or at least I think I'm right saying that?
no , because www.windrivers.com , is a drivers support site , that clearly says "you pay us xxx and we will locate the FREE drivers for you"Quote:

the ads have become larger and larger over the last couple of years , now bearingin mind the funds that are being raised thru driver subscriptions , you would have thought that adverts were not nessesarry , or needed because of the extra funding.
this site is no longer owned by scott , and is owned by internet.com ,who it is obvious are trying to raise as much $ as possible .
the extra banner placed at the top , has forced everything down an inch.
this site is supposed to be an international site ,,,yet i have to see an ad that relates to my location
we clearly have topics started and running about spyware and popup stoppers ,,,,this topic should stand.

Okay, I'm still looking for the darned ad. I don't see anything except the WinDrivers banner. Could be our lovely network folks are already suppressing it, just like they block us from access to streaming media, MP3 sites, etc. If so, then kudos to them for doing something useful! https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2005/03/1.gif
Yeah ta I know about hosts files ;) I just happened to be on a machine yesterday, that I hadn't updated !! .. & it occured just how large the ads were ..Quote:

ZAP is the way to go.
It might be for some, if you'd given a link :p (zap is a plugin to stop flash animations ? I think ..)Quote:

Ahh I see said the blind man ;) - this is what I meant Bookmarklets for Zapping Annoyances (there's lots of stuff makes flash animations more 'controllable' - sometimes you actually want the popup or ad!) , yeah sure lots of 'professinal' versions of firewalls come complete with their own blocklists, mind you you can add public free ones (which is all many vendors sell you) to almost all firewall products, personally I like hosts files for blocking ads, I only resort to IP block lists, for when I'm receiving random connects, like ftp servers & file sharing apps ..Quote:

Having the ads launch a video every time my mouse goes over it is still extremely aggravating.Quote:

I'm running Win98SE and did the copy & paste routine into my C:/windows/hosts.sam file. Saved it. Rebooted. Still getting those annoying ads in the top right screen. Since I'm on a slow dialup, it is really starting to p|ss me off.
Also, when I first found the hosts.sam file, Windows didn't know how to Open the file. So I just opened it with Notepad and saved it as hosts.sam.
Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?
tia
You want the hosts file, not hosts.sam Jaxson.Quote:

Make sure you use the quotes to keep the file from being saved with an extension (like .txt). If you find the file has an extension, you will need to get rid of the extension by renaming the file in Explorer to simply "Hosts".
Thanks guys.
