Just being curious...
If 2 people get married and one (or both) is under the legal age for drinking are they allowed to drink a cup of champaign on their wedding party at a restaurant??? Or do they have to stick with soda until they get home?

in the usa if you are under the drinking age it is legal for you to drink if your parents buy it and supervise the consumption of the alcohol.Quote:

The legal age for alcohol in the USA is 21 years old. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 required all states to raise their minimum purchase and public possession of alcohol age to 21. States that did not comply faced a reduction in highway funds under the Federal Highway Aid Act. The U.S. Department of Transportation has determined that all states are in compliance with this act. The national law specifically prohibits purchase and public possession of alcoholic beverages. It does not prohibit persons under 21 (also called youth or minors) from drinking. The term "public possession" is strictly defined and does not apply to possession for the following:The U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) subsequently identified 19 states which did not specifically prohibit the consumption of alcohol by persons under the age of 21. However, those states are in compliance with the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984. It would appear that such states could legally only charge underage persons with public possession of alcohol, not underage drinking.
- An established religious purpose, when accompanied by a parent, spouse or legal guardian age 21 or older
- Medical purposes when prescribed or administered by a licensed physician, pharmacist, dentist, nurse, hospital or medical institution
- In private clubs or establishments
- In the course of lawful employment by a duly licensed manufacturer, wholesaler or retailer.” 1 (Emphasis in original. Conspicuously not emphasized is the significant fact that “the law does not prohibit persons under 21 (also called youth or minors) from drinking.”)
The title of the legislation itself is clearly misleading in that the National Minimum Age Drinking Act doesn’t prohibit drinking by persons under the age of 21 (so-called “underage” persons) nor does it require the states to prohibit such drinking. In addition, descriptions of the law contribute to the false belief that it does. For example, the assertion that “the legal age for alcohol in the USA is 21 years old” clearly leaves the false impression that the minimum legal drinking age for alcohol is 21.
so it's ok if its being used for religion reasons, ie. communion
You still can't legally get a bottle for your kid and let him get tanked under your supervision!
I love how you can drink it, but you can't have it.
As I know the MIP all too well. Here is a case that I support the libertarians on. This shouldn't be a federal issue, and it should be back to 18. If these kids can vote, as well as die for this nation, they should be able to drink.
In Texas, it is legal for to serve a underage spouse an alcoholic beverage, as long as the other spouse is over 21. I took TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Comission) server/bartender classes and I tried this out when I was married, my wife was 19 and I was 22.
Things I didn't know, but glad I do now, thanks :thumbs:Quote:

So how many here had a drink under-age?
The way I understand it, the law changes to 21 started in an effort to reduce the amount of underage drinking. The thinking was that an 18 year old was more likely to have a lot of 16 and 17 year old friends, where a 21 year old was more likely to hang out with 19 and 20 year olds.
You mean people don't?Quote:

My parents let me try different alcoholic drinks, and probably would have let me drink a little of them, but everything I tried I didn't like.Quote:

1st time when I was 9 or 10 my parents gave me to taste some beer or wine I guess, tried some stronger ones later (vodka-like) but didn't like it. Also drank champaign on occasions as a teen, scotch and cognac at 15-16. But it was in a different country without all this underage drinking bull (10 yr old could go to the store and buy a bottle and a pack of cigarettes for his dad :D). And with all that underage 'drinking' I have never got drunk to this day.
At about 14 or so, I got to have a margarita with my parents when we went for our weekly tex-mex feeding
I can honestly say I didn't.....my biological father is a major alcoholic and growing up around all that made me not want to drink then, and I rarely do even now.Quote:
