Hi,
I can't get java to work with IE. I downloaded sun java 1.5.0-5 and installed on windows xp sp2 machine. I have both the advanced option checked to use java and under security I have enabled scripting. What's really odd is that it works fine when I use firefox. Can anyone suggest what to do with IE to get it to work with JAVA?

What security setting do you have? From the dump, it would appear that java is installed for IE to use. But then again, installing the latest sdk did not update my java virtual machine...strange, so I verified the install here and then accepted the updated jvm download.Quote:

Here's an update on actions taken.
I removed all java from machine. I noticed that I still had a java icon in control panel. When clicked I got a popup that said could not find registryentry at local_users\javasoft\1.4.1_03. I went into regedit and found the key. The files it points to are also under c:\program files. Now the weird thing is that in add/delete programs under control panel it's not listed.
I reinstalled 1.4.1_03 and that make the icon work but all it did was install another instance of 1.4.1 under java instead of under javasoft. so I unistalled again and noticed the the c:\program files\java directory remained but was empty. so I deleted the java directory by hand. Then I tried to reinstall verion 1.5.0_05 but it doesn't work with IE or Firefox. Ideleted and then reinstalled 1.4.1_03 and that does work with firedox but not IE. I then reinstalled 1.5.0_05 but that still doesn't work with firefox or IE.
hmmm I wondering if this is because it's the "latest" java. I have some oracle problems which are java related as well... tenuous, no evidence... but I am going to try nuking java 5 (1.5) or whatever they are calling it this week and installing 1.4.2
I don't think that's the problem. Before I deleted the java directory I was able to uninstall and install 1.5 as often as I wanted and it worked for firefox. I can't get any version to work with IE

How do you repair IE? Do I have to uninstall sp2 and then reinstall sp2?
I have installed wscripts host 5.6 and also msxml 3.0. I'm told that they are suppose to fix some problems that might be related.
I really want to know how to uninstll java completely. When I uninstall everything I can see in add/remove the icon for java is still in control panel. The files are still on the c drive and I have entries in regedit. Just nothing in add/remove. I think that might be the start of my problems. Any suggestions?

Yes you can, but backup your registry first in case you make a mistake.
Uninstaller software writers are getting lazier and lazier...I'm getting peeved with the number of times I have to run through the reg deleting keys that should have been dealt with by the uninstaller.

I've only run into similar problems two or three times. If the Microsoft Virtual Machine is installed Sun's Java virtual machine sometimes won't run. Microsoft's VM can be removed per: http://java.com/en/download/help/uninstall_msvm.xml
I have encountered a computer that was infected with malware which prevented Java from running, and if you are a member of a Windows Server 2000 or 2003 Domain, check your profile to make sure you are a Power User or better. Java and Citrix both have problems if you in a more restricted group.

Thanks for the information. I've checked and under browsers I don't have MS java. I've run a complete virus scan by current Norton and also panda and the machine comes up clean. Can you think of anything else to check???

yup ... well double click.... and answer the question about whether you are sure you want to merge this into the registry. Try it with something very easy like a key which stores your last search.

So here’s where we are:
1) can install jre 1.4.1_03 in same directory as before but the plug-in still sees two versions:
a. c:\program files\javasoft\jre1.4\1.4.1\bin\javaw.exe
b. c:\program files\javasoft\jre1.4\bin\javaw.exe
the first one exists but the second one does not. I can remove the first one but the icon still stays in the control panel but doesn’t work
2) both IE and Firefox see the 1.4.1_03 as long as Norton is disabled. If Norton Security 2004 is enabled then IE will not verify but Firefox will
3) When I update java to 1.5.0_05 it will update IE (If Norton is disabled) but can not be verified in Firefox
4) Under the java control panel under advance tag support for mozila and netscape doesn’t work. It says to check installation of bowser or I (an admin) don’t have permission. Firefox use to work fine but now I can just get 1.4.1_03
I would really like to completely erase java from the system and start again. I have made a copy of regedit but I’m afraid to just blindly delete regedit keys. Do you have some program that will clean the registry of java? Can you advise on how to remove? Is the Norton conflict a known bug? Please I’m desperate.
