Windows Fresh Install Error: PCI.sys

I found your site through googling my issue and finding this thread. I think I'm having a similar issue, but I tried what it said in that thread, and was unable to fix my issue.

I just purchaced a completely new computer(well, parts), that includes:
Pentium D 940 Pressler
ASUS p5WD2-E Premium Mobo
Kingston HyperX DDR800 1GB Ram(x2)
Western Digital Caviar 250GB SATA 3.0Gb/s HD's (x2, I want to do Raid 0 eventually).

Upon trying to install windows(off my XP non servicepacked install disk), I go through the loading drivers screen(and load the sata drivers off a floppy as well), and it errors on PCI.sys. I tried creating a slipstream disk using the latest version of nlite, but the disk I made wasn't recognized as bootable.

Here are my issues:
upon installing, I get this:
STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF748E0BF, 0XF78DA208, 0XF78D9F08)

pci.sys - Address F748E0BF base at F7487000, Datestamp 3b7d855c

Is this an issue that can be fixed by slipstreaming a SP2 install?

And, if so, is there some trick with nlite(its different now than the version that has examples that is linked to in that thread), that allows me to create a bootable image? right now all it does it create a set of files that I can burn onto a disk that acts as a SP2 install disk, but its not boot-ready.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm having the exact problem with

P-4 D 930
ASUS p5WD2-E Premium Mobo
1 GB Generic RAM
Hitachi 160 GB SATA 3.0 Hard Drive

I've done all the suggestions on the error message - no help

I even installed the XP Pro(SP1) onto the hard drive using a different computer - SUCCESSFULLY - yet when I put the drive back into the new unit I get the same error message!

I have swapped the RAM around and used only one at a time and disconnected all peripherals.

???

SOLVED IT on my system !!!

Went to:

Did the slipstream thing and was able to install XP Pro - it;s only been since Friday to fix this.

What videocard do you have ? It is your video card that is causing the problems. If you have a PCI bus card use an agp one or other way around and see if you pass the stage.

I'm using:
ASUS EXTREME N6200TC256/TD/64M NVIDEO 6200 TURBO CACHE PCI EXPRESS VGA W/TV & DVI-D

but I can't guarantee that it's the holdup, could be something new on the board, the SATA 3.0 etc.

I'll bet the SP2 slipstream does it (the disk must be done on machine with an XP OS)

Stop error dealing with pci.sys

I have noticed that everyone experiencing this problem has a SATA drive. I also have SATA with the identical problem. Please help me based on what little info I have gave?! I have a Toshiba Satellite U205. Core 2 Duo. 1024MB DDR2 RAM.

Had Windows Vista Home Prem. on it but tried to uninstall (didn't like it) to put Windows XP back on. Once the hard drive was formated using GDisk (a tool that can erase the hard drive 7-8 times over each other to dod standards).

I don't know what I lost that is making this problem consistant. I get the stop error at the beggining of the windows xp installation at the point that it has finished loading files and is "starting windows."

Did you press f6 and load the sata drivers when XP setup prompted you?

I also had this problem with a Toshiba Equium laptop. Bought brand new with the usual PC World rubbish pre-installed along with Windows Vista.
I tried all the killer disk and fdisk programs - none of which worked.
So in despiration, I inserted my old Win 2000 (SP4) cd rom and it formatted the HDD and installed WIN 2000. I was then able to use a slipstreamed WIN XP SP2 cd rom and was able to install XP as normal. (It may have even worked with a normal old edition of WIN XP PRO.)

I tried all of the steps outlined in your discussion and got as far as burning a CD. Once the CD was created, I either got an error message regarding the CD or nothing at all. I am using Roxio 9 to burn CD's as this post is a few years old now so maybe that has something to do with it. Any additional suggestions would help greatly..

Yes, slipstreaming SP2 seemed to have went well until the final product. All steps outlined went exactly as they were planned but when I put in my newly created CD I get nothing.

I do get the PCI.SYS error and yes these Dell drives are SATA.

So have you changed the bios to boot from CD? I think you can hit F12 on most dells to change the boot order.. and did you press a key when it detected a cd in the drive and prompted boot from cd?

If you have and can boot from another bootable cd, it means you didn't extract and burn the bootable img file along with the XP files.

Looks like this thread is pretty much dead,lol. Anyway, I'm having the same problem with my laptop I just got from my brother. It's a Dell Inspiron E1705 and I can't do a fresh copy of windows because that pops up when it goes to the loading screen...any idea what might be causing this, or any ways to fix it?

When you get errors like this during a clean installation of XP on a drive that's been freshly formatted, they are usually due to faulty RAM. If you have other memory you can try, that's usually the quickest way to troubleshoot the issue. Sometimes memory that can pass hours of diagnostics will still cause problems with a Windows installation.

It's not the RAM, and it's not a freshly formatted drive. There is an installation of Windows XP on the laptop, but the bios is somehow missing. Is there a way to format the drive and then somehow get the drivers into the system?
