Drivers Needed?

I have installed Vista r5308 on my HP ZE5468CL notebook, and played with it once a week for the past month. I installed it on a second 20g drive.

I was upset when it didn't find any devices! There were about 30 people in the lab, and I heard about 15 of them playing sound.

I didn't find a network adapter, soundcard, or, modem. It did find the Wifi card, so it wasn't a total loss. Went home, connected, and started looking. Eventually, found the data side of the modem, but I need sound!

Downloaded the latest sound and network drivers, but they don't work! Everything works fine with XP Pro, though! I ghosted the 60g drive onto an 80g drive, so I think I'm going to try an upgrade to Vista, to see if that works out any beter.

The notebook has "Altec Lansing" printed on the keyboard...

Most HP laptops come with a "Driver and Software Install CD" that contains device drivers, added software, etc. that's intended to be used after reinstalling Windows from the restore CD that came with your system. Later builds of Vista will find and install the needed drivers if you use the "Insert the CD that came with your ..." prompt to install them.

I've been using the CD, as well as later drivers from HP. I just had a chat today with a tech, and he said that there was nothing to do. He suggested a few X64bit drivers, but I haven't tried that, as I really doubt that they would work in a 32bit OS.

Nope, 64-bit drivers won't work on a 32-bit OS. 5308 is a really old build and probably isn't handling the XP drivers well. I'd try the latest Beta 2 build instead.

5308 is the newest version that is available. I got it at a User Group meeting a few months ago. I think it became available this past week.

What version of Directx do you have now?

Ah - no. [EDIT] Something here doesn't add up - I'm going to request a moderator review of this thread. I think we're treading pretty close to a piracy issue here.

It is a touchy area but of course most people prefer a redist pack to the usual temp downloads.

I will check with admin over this issue of redist microsoft packages on other sites. The only reason as stated that I did remove the link was because of the site popups and the bad rep that site does have.

I will add to the "members please read thread" in the lounge with clarified guidelines.

The whole thread is drifting in a very odd direction - the OP got his CD from a "user group meeting" which isn't an authorized distribution source for that build - or for that matter, any build of Vista that I know of. In any case, thanks for the attention and I think I'm just going to bow out of the discussion entirely.

Now about its re-distribution i have no clue about that so im just going to leave that be..

As far as getting Driver support for a operating system thats not even on the market.. Good luck w/ that. Might as well go install linux on your lappy and have just as much fun.. :D

Its not my ship. I am a member of the crew. But yes we do run a tight ship as far as grey areas and legal issues are concerned. As stated windrivers has a reputation to uphold of honesty and dealing with legal issues only.

I see where you are coming from and understand the concerns raised. However we should presume that users obtain platforms through legal means unless blatantly stated otherwise. MSDN members have access to releases earlier than standard users along with other test groups.

OK. I worded that incorrectly.

I got a genuine copy of Vista at a Microsoft User Group meeting (in my town).
They had a lab. 45 people brought lappys and a spare drive. I heard sound from about 30 of them. About 10 had issues that prevented loading. 5 had driver problems that were serious. They might have been newer though.

Also, being an MVP, I am entitled to a subscription to the Action Pack. I've gotten Vista ver 1 on dvd before, but went to the show to load ver 2 (and watch a demo of a newer version that was unreleased).

Vista doesn't use Windows Update. You can't tell it what device you have, and it doesn't recognize some devices. That's why they release it in Beta.

Solution... GIt rid of XP!

There might have been a few 64bit machines there. So, it could be that the drivers are being developed there, first. Seems to me that almost no current PC will be able to run it, but, that might also be in the plan.

Back on the dark side. No updates for drivers, yet. I'll leave it overnight and see if auto update finds anything.

Currently I am running Vista beta 2 build 5384 Eval edition
The only driver problem was for my XFI sound card, Creative had a beta driver for that which made Vista complain that it was slowing my system down
Any other drivers for my Nvidia chipset and video card were readily available
I think you got an old build of Vista, Check on MS site, they do offert Vista beta 2 as a download, Make sure you give them your email address so that they can send you a product key

So far Vista is looking good, I just turn all the security stuff off ;)

I'm running 5308. I think they were demoing 5384 when I got it.

I can't believe that there isn't some kind of upgrade. Does that mean that I have to format and install again?

Also, where did you turn off the security prompts? I like them when I'm missing stuff, but I'd like to turn it off in the future.

I just kind of probed around and found where to turn some stuff off, I did use the control panel for some items

I wonder if you were to download Vista beta 2 and toss it in while running your earlier build, If it would give you the option to upgrade, Hard to tell with a beta OS, It may mean backing up and formatting to install the latest build

Someone should post a link to download it. I'm trying to decide it I should download and burn a DVD of data, or just download it to the old Vista and try to get some kind of app working that will open an iso file.

Swapped in Vista, booted, and the system hung. Couldn't get anywhere. Started hearing grinding sounds from the HD, and it'd freeze up.

Switched back, and had a problem. Had to go into setup first. After 2 boots, it finally came back. I don't know, but it sounds like the 20g drive died.

I decided to use the Download Manager to download the new version, and burn to a DVD on the other computer. I'll try the old 20g drive again, to see if I can resurrect it, otherwise, I may try an upgrade to the 60g drive that I ghosted to the current 80g drive.

30% complete. Going to be a long night...

EDIT: 5 hours later, Complete. Now have to share and try to burn from a network drive...

By the sounds of it, that 20 gig drive is on it's way out , I had a noisy IBM travelstar drive that I replaced with a Seagate momentus in my old laptop, When I decided to trade in this laptop with the old drive I found that the old drive would not detect in the bios, Yes this drive was noisey

I would try one of your newer drives for a Vista install , I have a 7200 rpm drive in my newest notebook and the thing boots faster than my desktop

Latest problem: 2K3 Server won't burn an ISO using Nero onto a DVD. The BURN button doesn't light up. I thought that I had it working a month ago, but, it isn't now.

I might have to uninstall and reinstall Nero. Not sure, though.

I'm going to check back to see what they recommend. I've used Burn4Free to put an ISO on a CD, so I wonder if that might work.

EDIT: w00t! B4Free had an upgrade, and that appears to be working! 1/3 burned so far!
