Need to increase resolution & color to 256

I really know very little about configuring new hardware to a CPU. I had a complete Gateway 2000 system given to my son for his children to run their programs on. The CPU was not good, but I have a Dell Optiplex GX110 that is working pretty well. The problem is that I apparently don't have the right display adapter or driver for the monitor which is a Vivitron 1776. I have read several forum posts on the problem but they either assume I know something or the listed procedure doesn't work for me.

Any suggestions as to how I can correct this problem? The games they have will not run unless I can change the colors to 256.

What operating system is on the problem machine?

I selected the following drivers
Super VGA 1024x758
Super VGA adapter
& got this message
"There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is incorrect or the current settings (options included 256 & hi bit & resolution slider works) do not work with your hardware."
The monitor is working just fine. That is the only Gateway element in the system

dell drivers for the optiplex There are 3 video drivers possible... do you know the service tag for the dell?

The gateway 2000 monitor is not bad - it should run ok as plug and play but the drivers are here

As I understand this, you want to run the Gateway 200 Vivitron 1776 monitor on the Dell Optiplex GX110.

The Dell has Win98SE and the Gateway had Win 9x.

Open Windows explorer and create a new folder under c:\Programs and name it Audio.

Then, go to the last site NooNoo gave you - there are 2 files there - left click on the .exe one and then on save and save it to the c:\programs\Audio folder.

Then pester NooNoo about what to do next. :)

I already downloaded the .exe file. (I downloaded on my Mac & burned the disc with Toast. I am now ready to move to that pesky PC. We'll see what happens now!

Well the verdict is in. I downloaded & saved the 9x_monitor.exe file as suggested. I still get the same error message: "There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is incorrect or the current settings do not work with your hardware." when I set the display to 256 colors.

I still need a fix.

OK - so you saved it and wrote it to disk and then copied it to the Dell and then did you double click it to make it install?

How do you "copy" it to the Dell? I unzipped it & it launched the text file. I "saved" it to the Audio folder, if that is what you mean. In giving me instructions, please don't assume I know anything that a PC user would know. As far as I am concerned, "Mac's Rule!" I have been a bonafide Mac fan for 20 years starting with the old Apples that ran BASIC. If my son didn't prefer PC's, believe me, I wouldn't be working so hard to get this conflict resolved.

You downloaded the files and burned them to a cd with Roxio Toast
What CCT was asking did you put burned cd into troubled computers
cd rom. then go to start, my computer,to cd rom you inserted cd.
Right click that cd rom being D,E,etc. and explore disk, find the file and
right click again and open files.

Which one(s) do I need?

Good question, that is why I wanted the service tag... but this is a business machine and they don't differentiate between the video types, since they assume that there will be an IT department sorting it out.

From what you have said, you appear to have changed the video adapter, and I assume you do not remember what was there before, so you are going to have to download and install everest and find out what it says about your video and display, then post that information here.

As for installing the gateway 2000 monitor driver, all you needed to do was double click the .exe file you burned to a CD on the dell, it would have installed from there (or perhaps just unpacked). In control panel, system under monitor - what does it say your monitor is?

Yes, this is a business machine. I bought it from a man who buys at surplus auctions. The monitor I have selected is "Plug & Play" but when I restart it commonly goes back to default monitor with stanard PCI graphics adapter.

I opened the following file so I presume the software installed from the self-extracting file when I unzipped it.

Everest has been installed & now I don't know what info you want. I find "Plug & Play" for monitor. What else do you need from the report page? Custom report? Do you need to know anything else about system devices?

click on the plus sign next to display adapter and then windows video, and see which of the three you found from the link in NooNoo's post is listed..go back to that link, download the driver, and install it.

Well .... None of the drivers listed at the download site appear w/Everest. The only things there are the Super VGA that I installed and an item labeled "installed drivers" framebuf.drv

You could try going to windows updates and see if there is any drivers for you to download for your machine

An item "Mulitple Monitors" the detail indicates Display 1 is the primary. Could this be part of my problem? Is my system set up for 2 or more displays? If so, how do I go about setting it up? I am just about ready to give up on getting my CPU to tell the monitor to display 256 colors, but I feel sure that it should be able to. Going to sleep on it some more.

I think geoscomp wants you to run Everest, click on Display, then GPU and report what the adapter info is.

It may be convenient to get there then click on Report, then Quick report GPU, then plain text and eventually copy and paste that with your reply.

edit: Display, Windows Video and report that also same way.

PCRookie, you have changed the original driver for the video card, this means it is now difficult to tell what the original hardware was.

VGA and super vga etc are just generic names for minimal drivers which allow you to see the screen.

Please look at the back of the computer, does the monitor appear to be connected to the upper portion of the case or the lower portion....
if it is onboard graphics (the intel graphic driver) the monitor will be plugged in the upper portion of the case and the socket will be near the mouse, keyboard and usb ports. If the monitor is connected further down the case in it's own slot it will be one of the two other drivers.

Frequently the system "finds an unknown device" and loads the default monitor with this adapter, "Standard PCI graphics adapter (VGA)".
The monitor plugs into the case lower, below the connection for the keyboard & mouse.

I haven't solved my problems yet. I have found repeated postings about people who have lost the option of 256 colors when installing new software or hardware. So far, I have not been able to recover that ability. Another thing that I have noted is that "system" shows 1 unknown device and 1 unsupported device. I have no idea what that could mean. What should I do about them? disable them in the profile?

Anyone else who has a suggestion more helpful than "You could try going to windows updates and see if there is any drivers for you to download for your machine".

Is there some aspect of Dell Optiplex that would help overcome Win 98's "default/plug and play" from commandeering any plans I have for opting for 256 color. & BTW what is a color profile?

You will continue to have the color problem until you figure out exactly what video card you have..you are missing the video card drivers and are using generic ones that do not allow high color.

Well, at the risk of repeating previous ideas:

Run Everest on the GX110, click on Display, then GPU and report what the adapter info is. Then click on Display, then Windows Video and report that info also.

In each case, once the data is displayed, it may be convenient to then click on Report (in Everest at the top of the screen), then Quick Report xxxx, then plain text and eventually copy and paste that txt report with your reply.

Then, hopefully, we will know what video component you have.

I did that but I am not hooked up to the internet on that computer. I am using a Mac G4 to copy/paste is not an option. I also don't have a printer on that computer. So here is the info as best I can get it transcribed.

I am not sure which driver to download. AND I am on a slow dialup (I live in podunk) and connected at 26400 bps, it will take a while to download. I can't really justify process of elimination as I would have my phone line tied up too long. My spouse needs to use it too. Yesterday as I downloaded Everest, the phone was needed when I reached 96%. My husband doesn't "do computers" so trying to explain is that if I disconnected when he wanted me to would mean that the 45 minutes I had already spent trying to download would be wasted & I would have to start all over again & use the phone even longer fell on deaf ears!

its over 4.5MB, so at your connection speed, be prepared to tie the phone line up for 45 minutes or so.
