Thank you for your reply. I did exactly as you described, following the instructions. HP Director etc. can be used, but no printer.
I deinstalled everything with the HP deinstall software and repeated the installation process, but no success again.
Can you get the printer to pass the Self-Tests from the front panel?
Also, try a different USB cable.
Can you use that USB port for other devices succcessfully?
Just a couple of suggestions...
Is the printer plugged in and powered on? Does it show in device manager at all?
Thank you for all your replies.
I installed VP with SP2. The printer works on another PC (with W2000). I tried other USB ports without success. Other devices do work on the USB ports and the printer is not recognised in the device manager.Quote:

Is this PC installed with XP or Vista. Try another USB port?

So the printer works (on another PC) and the USB ports are OK.
Are the U.S.B. ports you are trying to use 2.0?
Yes, they are.
Is the CMOS (bios) set for ECP or EPP printing?
Will check that. What should it be?
ECP+EPP is the usual setting... which it should be depends on the printer - check the printer manual.
The BIOS is setup for ECP. I'll try to find out what the manual says.
The manual says nothing about ECP or EPP.

It's a USB printer:knife:Quote:

SPP/ECP/EPP are modes for parallel ports not for USB:devil:Quote:

Always nice to be reminded that I'm not the only one who suffers the occasional braincramp.
All smart-*** tendencies are welcome, but I had done that already. Those drivers are old and give the same results. What I do not understand that the printer works normally with another, old W2000 PC. Beats me.
I would suggest trying this: Hit the start button, then the run command, and type services.msc in the box. Look and see if the spooler service is running, I saw that bork up a machine a few times.
If you didn't see any errors installing the printer, the next thing I'd try (after Guts' suggestion) is running System File Checker. If that doesn't flag and fix any problems, I would guess that you may have some software conflict on the machine perhaps. You can try running Process Monitor to help identify points where the printing process may be hanging.
If the printer shows under printers try this:
-delete any jobs that are in the queue of the printer, then reboot
-replace the driver used by the printer with the "universal" HP LJ 6L (printer properties, advanced tab, new driver, manufacturer HP, model Laserjet 6L)
-try to print, it may take a bit to spool and print - up to 2 min
-if success create a new printer which goes to the same port and manually choose the 5050 driver (repeat the procedure used for installing the LJ 6L, do not run the driver installer from HP!!!)
-try printing a test page on the new printer.
If it doesn't show anywhere you may need to do some manual cleanup of the registry in the USB devices area...
I tried to install a HP Photosmart printer by connecting the USB cable, which gave no problems, the printer was recognized. I then did the same with the 5505 (same USB port) and surprise: the printer was recognized and the drivers were installed. It now works (but I still don't understand....).
Thank you for all replies and suggestions!
That's for Vista, I have XP.
It works now doesn't it Panhead?
Sometimes windows gets in a rut, installing another printer junked the previous info about it, so when you installed the 5505 again, it started from scratch and recognised it properly.
Yes, it works. Maybe it's better not to know why it didn't work at first.
Ignorance is bliss!
That explains why i am a happy man!
Computers can be the strangest things!
I was updating a BIOS yesterday, and the system flat-out refused to recognise the presence of the ROM file on floppy disk or CD. Then for no apparent reason after about a quarter hour of recalcitrance, it suddenly said reading ROM file, and flashed the BIOS (successfully...)
??
I'm happy too!
