Hi
Will the Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H run a AMD phenom X4 processor and if so what can it support upto.
Here is the list of cpu's that the board your asking about supports.
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/M...ProductID=2579
You know,
Just once OMG you might consider that's the model that is available to this person,
and not the one your trying to ram down their throat :)
In fact this page says it supports it right out of the box with its factory bios and says nothing about having to upgrade it.
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/...=GA-MA69GM-S2H
CPU
1. Support for Socket AM2+/ AM2 processors: AMD Phenom™FX processor/ AMD Phenom™ processor/ AMD Athlon™ 64 FX processor/AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core processor/AMD Athlon™ 64 processor/AMD Sempron™ processor.
UMMM let me see
DUH!
it may be the only model avaliable to him.
DUH
It clearly states for those that have the ability to read that it supports the Phenom.
UK avaliability is not the same as american or canadian avaliability
I want to use the Phenpm 9950 but it looks like the Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H will only support upto Phenom X4 9850.
Also what i forgot to mention is I alread have the MA-69GM S2H already installed using a dual core processor.
So I guess the question really is will the 9950 make a big difference from the 9850. There is 0only a 100Mhz speed difference i think.
So do you think I should just stick with the board I have and go for the 9850.
In fact it says neither way whether it does or does not support that CPU.
I would say since it supports all the others the 9950 is just a mhz jump and not a technology jump. It should be fine with that 9950. Now an email to gigabyte support isn't hard and doesn't take a lot of time and will likely tell us whether that list was made before the 9950 was market available.
Also since it seems to me you have a pretty decent video card for that system upgrading to the board OMG suggested is going to net you nearly nothing except cost

Now as to whether there is any significant difference between the 9850 and the 9950 at 100 MHZ.
No definitely not. It will likely be measurable in a specific benching program but as to whether it will run your game significantly faster the short answer is no.
What I am saying is based on exact hardware for both cpu's without changes a game like Farcry2 or COD 5 wont show you any real world difference using either 9850 or 9950.
Also what is different between the normal processors and the Black edition ones?
i will email gigabyte and let you know what they say. So shal i stick with my MA69GM S2H board? I am currently running a X2 5200 i think it should make a lot of difference upgrading from this CPU wot do you think?
I think emailing is the wisest choice.
We aren't in possession of all of the info from Gigabyte.
They can answer the question best.
Switching cpu's and seeing enormous speed increases in my opinion is unlikely.
You really need applications and or games which are multi cpu aware i think.
I would just wait and see exactly what Gigabyte has to say, and disregard some others advice which is based on their own knowledge and not Gigabytes information.
The Gigabyte I bought did not support the 9850 when I bought it but i like you had a dual core. Which I was using and i emailed Gigabyte and they assured me it would work and when I put it in it did. So since it isnt any type of huge platform change as I said I would wait for quality information
I would pay the restocking fee when I suggested waiting for a final word from Gigabyte?
Are you slightly confused?
I have E-mailed Gigabyte so will wait and see what they say.
The CPU spport list form my motherboard says it suppors the 9850 so it should work without no problem. So don't worrk Ferrit will not have to pay anything :)
The 9950 may also work but I will wait for confirmation from Gigabyte.
Good choice Vakas :)
Real information from a legitimate source.
I received a reply from Gigabyte this morning and this is what they said...
Hi,
The board doesn't support AMD Phenom X4 9950 CPU. The motherboard support up to X4 9750 CPU with the latest BIOS F5. Please refer to the attached CPU Support List for details. Thanks

So I guess I will have to get a new motherboard, I am still not sure which one to get I have seen a few which one would you say was the best for what I need it for.
I already have a decent graphics card I just want high speed performance and also will be upgrading my RAM from 5 to 8GB.
Here are the ones I had a look at...
Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-DS2H AMD 780G

Gigabyte GA-M750SLI-DS4 NF750a SLI

Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H AMD 790GX

Gigabyte GA-MA78GPM-DS2H

Let me know what you think..
What will you do with the old board?
I may build another system using this processor and motherboard
OK, but if you wanted it to go to a good home :)
Before you jump off and buy another board, if you wait a couple of months, you can get a board which supports AM3 and DDR3. Right now, there are only AM2 boards which will take an AM3, but don't have DDR3 (except as part of the onboard video)... but Jan/Feb will see a new crop of boards.
Hmmmm let me think about it going to a good home i'll get back to you on that :)
I was thinking the same about waiting a while and getting DDR 3 memory I am in no rush so I think I should wait i think.
It's not like i am having any problems right now anyway I just wanted something a bit faster.
Glad you got the exact information you needed.
My choice would be the
Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H AMD 790GX

Are there currently any AMD motherboards available that support DDR 3
Not that I can see... the whole point of AM3 is to be able to use DDR3, so I guess until the AM3 is ready, you won't see any ddr3 boards for it.
Vakas I wouldn't bother with the above suggestions. You have a decent rig atm so unless you specifically want to do a platform change AM3 DDR3 boards will be out in early 2009.
AT Least i let him decide and didnt try to badger him into first buying a board that you later told him to ignore then suggesting another, then jumping to intel.
Don't worry about it guys the whole point of the forum is to ask questions and share your knowledge as some people know more than others.
I am not prepared to go for Intel I have been using AMD for years I have never used an intel for my personal use it's AMD all the way for me.
As for minimal performance between DDR 2 anf DDR 3 I read somewhere that It will make a huge difference. So what do you say to this?
Jury is still out... You can check out differences for the intel setup, but the AMD memory controller is on the cpu, not on the motherboard as is with intel...up until the i7 that is... Intel now incorporate the memory controller on die... so until someone can benchmark an AM3 on a board that can accept DDR2 or DDR3 I don't think you are going to get an answer.
I would never say that there isn't a significant difference because like you Vakas I use nothing but AMD for myself and my customers. There isn't any information yet. Because the memory controller for AMD is built into the cpu and they use Hyper Transport it's not easily compared to Intel. Also likely the same as DDR2 we may have to wait for chipsets to catch up to timmings.
