I purchased a HI-VAl CDRom from Circuit City. It failed within a couple of weeks - no big deal. The HI-VAL web site is not up, and the tech support people responded with a blank reply.
PS I've noticed that Circuit City is still adverting HI-VAL products such as DVD drives - at least in the Washington area. That's criminal for a large retailer to stick customers with leftover product from a failed or reorganizing company. Boycott the unethical fatherless so an so's.

I have a Hi-VAL Cd-rom that crapped out on me as well. It would spin up and stop and then spin up again and stop. I am still Using a Hi Val CDROM.
Ive been using it for Four Years now.
It was on sale at Comp USA.
It advertised a "Pioneer" manufactured transport system (Slot load type).
Mine works good...sorry about yours.

It also survived several assasination attempts by my children...hehe...good thing I fixed CD players for a living. 8o)
The only Hi-Val product that I have is a CD-RW drive. I bought it something like 4 years ago. I really don't remember when. Let's put it this way... It's a 2x2x24 and at the time it was pretty fast. I never had a problem with it until I tried to burn an image right from Norton Ghost. It would not find the drive. I can't blame Hi-Val since. I'm sure that the drive is just too old to be supported. Now it makes a good CDROM on my server where it doesn't get much use and I bought a new Acer 12x8x32 for burning. Other than that I have never had a problem.
