I have tried the solutions posted in this thread but I am still having the problem. I even tried deleting the entire "Setup" key.
Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Welcome to Windrivers pmolaughlin
Can you restate your particular problem?
Is this XP, with which service pack?
What hardware are you trying to install?
Don't worry about it -- I ended up wiping the computer and doing a fresh install. Thanks anyway!
oh ok... a fix is a fix!
Thanks for this tip. It worked exactly as you described. I'm running XP HOme edition. THanks again
Welcome to Windrivers yostr - glad it helped.
I bought an HP multi-function 2nd-hand. I was impatient installing it, and connected the USB too soon. Then I tried to use the installation CD, and got the "installation in progress" message.
I had 3 on-line chats w/HP support, and tried everything they said, with no success. I google-searched, and found this thread.
My only variation on the theme was that I renamed the registry key, so that I would not lose it completely in case the solution did NOT work.
This solution was so easy it is incredible. I am very surprised that HP support did not know to try it. They are either unaware or hesitant to have random users muck w/the registry. (I am moderately technical, and have less trepidation.)
Now my moral dilemma is whether to point them to this page, or charge them a hefty consulting fee for the information. If the latter, DoubleTrouble, you can have a share!
Peace,

I'm in! Oh and welcome to Windrivers Step1
Hello everyone!
I tried out the things written here but I didn't find any of the registry files posted above. They don't exist in my registry so that I can delete them.
My problem is about the USB. Whenever i connect a new device to it , I cannot use it because has to be recognized and installed. If I use a USB device that I already installed before having this problem it works.
So I went to Add Hardware and I saw I had this error:
Cannot Run Two Device Installations:
You can install only one device at a time.
Another installation is underway, when it is finished you can try this wizard again.
...but never finishes...
I am using XP SP2, version 2002, if that is of any use.
Thanks,
abdul
Download and run CCleaner:

It may well be something in a temp folder has 'hung up' your installs.
The only items I don't have checked in that are under Advanced:
Tray notification........
Windows size.............
Hotfix uninstallers......
Custom files and folders....
edit: If that doesn't do it after a reboot, try Dial-a-Fix:

Thanks a lot for the help. I did both but still, there is the same thing happening...Do you have any other suggestion?
Thanks
Go into safe mode and check device manager. Look for any devices that are not correctly installed or have duplicates and uninstall them. Reboot to normal mode and see if windows detects any new devices.
Have you checked bios/setup to ensure that usb is properly enabled?
Thanks for the help.Quote:

I checked out the device manager - there is no problem there, and I didn't find any other conflict. I don't think it's a setting from the bios, because to a certain point everything it was working ok. Probably it happened after installing some software. But I don't know how to track that...
An interesting approach to this problem in this thread:
