This error is common and dont really mean any thing except that the driver was not verifiyd by MS. Only by ATI
Use it.
Also make sure that you have leatest DX installed.

try changing the refresh rate and try it again

Do you leak any fluids, do you have any bumps on your rear, do you have any unpleasant odors?
If you answered yes to any of these then you are not qualified to own a new AMD ATHLON XP.
If someone ask you if you are running the all-new fastest AMD ATHLON XP, just turn around and reply "WHY YES, AND ITS CERTIFIED"

Also make sure you have a monitor defined, rather than just 'default monitor'. If you monitor isn't in the list, go for 'Plug n Play Monitor'. That should give you more resolutions to play with.

Then the only other file would be the 1.29 patch, but I'm guessing you've loaded that already.

PlanetQuake has the 1.29h Point Release for Quake 3 which may resolve some issues.
But the main question is, can your card interpret OpenGL commands properly?
Most older ATI cards were 2D/3D hybrid cards. My previous card, an ATI RageII+ could not, but did process Direct3D. Yet the Xpert98, which supports AGP 2x, does both.
