    Angry Biggest stumper ever!

I have the biggest stumper of a problem you ever have seen.

    Asus A7V
    TBird 1GHz
    VisionTek GF2MX 32MB
    SBLive Value
    128MB PC133 CAS2
    20.5GB HDD (Pri Master)
    LS-120 Floptical drive (Seconday Master)
48x CDROM (Promise Controller Pri Master)
Acer 4x4x32 CDRW (Promise Controller Sec Master)
    Diamond SupraMax PCI Modem
    300W Power Supply
    W98SE

I upgraded this sytem from a KA7 and Athlon 700 thinking my problems were due to a bad motherboard. What was going on was, Windows would run just fine, but once I fired up any game it would lock randomly anywhere from 20 seconds in the game to over an hour.

I checked for overheating and am not OCing. I tried reinstalling windows, all the latest drivers, nothing works.

I bought a new motherboard and CPU and reinstalled everything AGAIN. All new drivers and everything again. This time the games don't lock up but spontaneously quit to the desktop. Diablo II will beep at me and lock (the beep I think is a windows error), UT will kick me to the desktop with a GPF, Worms Armageddon will just spontaneously kick me to the desktop.

If I disable sound drivers my games run stable, but what fun is that? I have tried reinstalling the drivers, trust me. I've tried every conventional method of fixing this thing.

Another thing I've noticed now, whenever I try to defrag my disk it will stop responding and I will have to press my reset button.

    Drivers:
VIA drivers, installed the 4 needed drivers not including the DMA one, downloaded separately from their website because the versions were slightly newer than the 4in1 4.25a package.
Det3 6.31 drivers, coolbits registry enabled
SBLive Liveware 3.0 with the Creative Driver update for W98
Installed DirectX 8 but downloaded a DX uninstaller and reinstalled 7.0a. Both don't work.

I have reinstalled windows 4 times now, and have reinstalled drivers god knows how many times. I tried disabling the SB16 emulation and all that, tried checking for overheats, scanned for viruses, reinstalled reinstalled reinstalled, replaced every component of hardware in my system with identical counterparts save my HD, CDrom, LS120 and CDRW, mobo and CPU (Which I bought new ones for). Even changed out the PS, tried reinstalling everything on a different HD (WD 6.4GB ATA33), NOTHING WORKS.

What is going on??????????????? Is my computer just cursed or something? When I first built my 700 in the summer it worked great no problems whatsoever. I am fairly certain I didn't change anything other than maybe some software or something but I started to get locks in my games and it slowly got worse. What do I do? This is really frustrating. I have tried sysopt.com's forums and haven't been able to find an answer there, I was hoping you guys knew.

    You're right..what a puzzler.

A couple of things to try.

In BIOS, make certain ram settings are for 133 and not 100. Your board defaults to pc100.

Power Supply may be too small.(I know, 300 is large but AMD's take a lot) I'm running a 250 with a AMD 1GHz TB and I lock up in Diablo as well. Just a thought.

Another tech(Mustang) was concerned that maybe you didn't update your agp drivers. Try this link.
    http://www.asus.com/Products/Motherb...r_utility.html

    Good luck!

    Cool

Just a thought. What and how many applications do you run in the background? If you are not connected to the net there is no need to run a virus scanner. You might try shutting down all programs but the ones you need to run the game. Some find it useful to make a boot disk just for playing games.
Computers follow your orders, not your intentions.

Did I read all the details correctly? I think you said that everything was fine when you removed the soundblaster drivers? Perhaps you could try the original drivers off the install CD (believe me new drivers are definitely not always the best solution). Also, suggested but not mentioned specifically, did you try a different sound card?

FIrst thing, is the Promise controllers don't always handle CD drives well...they're meant for hard drives. Tried that configuration yet?

Also, try removing the sound card, and running everything without it. And keep going like that piece by piece (removing one device at a time) and see if that does it. You also might need to shuffle the devices around and change their IRQ configuration.

Nice Website- even has the older 4.24 and 4.23 drivers! (Which I was thinking of trying) I installed the 4.25's already though. If I just run the installer for the 4.24 then should it revert me back or do I need to delete some files first?

I'll try using the LW2.0 CD again, but I think I tried that with my 700.

I did actually try slipping an ISA sound card (That is all I have besides my SBLive) into my KA7 when I had that... I still got locks.

I'm new to this 4 IDE Header stuff... I tried some combos with my drives but couldn't get what I wanted to work... I would like this:

-Each device alone as master on a chain.
-LS-120 be the first bootable device
    -IDE Drive next
    -CDROM last

I tried putting my HD on the ATA100 chain but it wouldn't boot off of it. How do I arrange this?

    Thanks

    Ruahrc

Oh yeah my RAM is set for PC133. Also, does anyone have the file called viagart.cat? I was installing the VIA AGP drivers and it asked for it, but it apparently wasn't in the downloaded file. I really doubt it but this still could be the source of my problem?

That missing file IS your problem....that's the AGP driver for the motherboard!!!

TO boot offf of the ATA-100 controller, you have to set your boot sequence to SCSI, then IDE....technically, the ATA-100 controller is considered a SCSI controller.

I moved some PCI Cards around and tinkered and got my SBLive all alone on IRQ5 with the same problem.

Something I noticed that happens to my games: I will be in the game and it works fine. Then all of a sudden the keyboard won't respond. So in UT I would be able to look around and fire with the mouse but not be able to move. After about 5 or 10 seconds of this it will boot me to the desktop.

    Ruahrc

IF that file is my problem- WHO HAS IT SO THEY CAN EMAIL IT TO ME!

I think your graphics card is inadequate for your system. From what I have researched, a 1GHz machine should be running a GeForce2GTS minimum. You could even use a GTSUltra. MX cards are for sub-700MHz machines.

I certainly dont agree that the gfx card isn't good enough. If you've replaced the other components it could be faulty but I doubt it's the fault.
Have you used the NVidia detonator3 driver for the GFX card? I think it is the best driver for any NVidia based card.

Main point when you said youd installed the VIA AGP driver alarm bells rang. I've had that 4 in 1 driver FUBAR more then one system. I've stopped using them.

Definately consider the Nvidia D3 driver.

    Cheers
    Scutter

I just re read your post saw that you're using D3. I'm fairly convinced the VIA driver is your problem.

    Thumbs down

The GF2MX card is way too slow for your system. I'm not saying that this is the complete answer to your problems, but you should be running at least a GF2GTS. The difference being that the MX is a stripped down version of the GTS. The MX runs at 175MHz, the GTS at 200MHz. The MX has two rendering pipelines, the GTS has four, giving it twice the fill rate. The MX is a good card but you need to match the card to your system. Your's needs something with more grunt.

Agreed, the MX is the bottleneck for my system, but there are 2 problems with upgrading:

    1. My system has problems. What good is upgrading the video if I can't use it?

    2. I'll upgrade, just give me $500 to buy a shiny new GF2Ultra 64MB beast. Some of us don't have deep pockets .

Plus I'm not complaining that my system is slow, my 700 did just great for me.

It might be my 4in1's, degrading to the 4.24's seemed to stabilize it out a little, but the problems are still there. How do I completely uninstall the thing and what do I use for a 1 by 1 installation?

Tried WinME to see if it would fly, but got the exact same behavior, even can't defrag just like W98SE. Off of a fresh install following an uncontitional format too.

Here's my DX8 files, tell me if one of them isn't versioned right? I think it is some error in here...

The vfwwdm32.dll file might be a problem, but I doubt it. Have you gotten the Via 4in1 drivers to install without giving you that missing file error yet? I'm telling you, that's probably the problem.

Oh, and I don't wanna hear ANYTHING about the GeForce2MX not being "adequate"...I find it wonderful...play LOTS of games on it...at 1024x768x32, too. When properly overclocked, it's great.
