 Max Ram for Windows 98SE
How much Ram can Windows 98SE manage? I was told it would only properly manage up to 128MB. I have found one reference that "implied" it could managing 256MB.

I have heard 512 but you will see little performance over 256.I run 384 cause I have it, but would pull to 256 as I have done before and won't see a difference. <IMG SRC="smilies/cool.gif" border="0">

I have 384 as well, which windows 98 recognizes. I don't have any reason to go any further. I do notice a difference from 256 to 384 with scanning large pictures. Is photoshop/scanning going to be your reason to increase memory?
I live in my own little world, but it's ok... they know me here

Windows will recognize any amount of Ram But the performance will end aroung 256MB.
I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

If you use over 128 mb of in windows 98 se you have to change the file system to Network Server. Any amount of ram over 512 in 98 se and you will encounter errors unless you turn off virtual memory. I have had 1 GB of ram in a win98 se system but had virtual memory turned off. You can use any amount you want but I have noticed once you go over 512 the performance does decrease a little bit. If you are using over 256 in windows 98 se you should probally go to a different operating system that has better memory managment, Like windows 2000.

If you search the win98/win95 forum you will find many different disscussions about this topic. It has probally been disscussed hundreds of times on this site, try searching for what your going to post because lots of times people already had your problem and have a fix already posted.

I'm using 512 with no problem. I have an additional 128 that did make a significant difference in ME, but errors with 98.

I believe the limit lies within the CPU..not win98. I think it's 2 Gb...although I don't have any computers that have that much. I know that the server has 1GB..running NT..and it runs just fine. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> But probably anything over 256 will make no difference whatsoever... mainly because if you try to open so many programs in Win98 to use all that RAM it will probably crash. I've run 256 and 512 in my 98SE and ME system...and didn't see any difference other then the few extra points in the benchmark.
