Question desktop icon cannot be removed

I installed a program, which I later deleted. The program left an icon on my desktop which seems to be permanent. I have tried to remove it, uninstall and send to another location--its still there. How can I get rid of the icon?

Well if it is a program shortcut, simply delete it.

If it's an icon it puts on your desktop...hmm, well you will have to tell me what application it is?

If worse comes to worse, Tweak UI can hide the icon.

The icon cannot be dragged anywhere, including the recycle bin.

What is Tweak UI, and how is it used?

Sounds like a good way to hose your computer. I'd try TweakUI first.

You can get TweakUI here

My system has already been hosed by everything but a garden hose.(The garden hose would make for great fireworks--my computer would provide entertainment for once.)
With the TweakUI: I downloaded it, made it as far as Winzip, and then it quits.

Well, let's see...you've got programs crashing; icons that won't delete off the desktop; modems that won't install ( http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin...&f=11&t=002983 )....I hate the old format & reinstall option that so many advocate but your system seems pretty messed up....This might be one time to consider it.

In such cases, I use Norton Win Doctor.

I have to agree with Sowulo on this one, unfortunately it means a wipe and reinstall. You shouldn't be having ANY problems with the link I supplied, as it's a self extracting EXE file. Not a ZIP file. So there is no reason to have it open in WinZip.

First off back up your registy before trying this.

Try looking here in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
then you look in each of these:
{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
(this one is the recycle bin btw)
the name of the Icon may show up.

then delete the {435u2oietc... key it belongs to.
May the Schwartz be with you
Too many zeros, not enough ones.

The problem(one of many)is that my system only has an old 3 inch floppy drive to use for backup. How many floppy disks to back up over a Gig of info? I have considered getting a CD-RW drive, but am unsure if it would work on my computer--its only runs at 200Mhz.(Nothing else works, why would that?)

Why not just delete the Windows directory and reinstall? You can leave all your data where it is as long as it isn't in a subfolder to c:\windows. Note: you will have to reinstall your apps after installing Windows but your custom settings and data will still be in place.
