NT4 printer driver rpoblems
I am in charge of a few NT4 servers and these at present have a number of printer shares already set. I have built 3 new NT4 w/s pc's to act as Print servers. I have recreated the printer shares(with new share names) and then loaded the latest print drivers from HP. The problem I have is that the users can attach OK to the shares, but can not change which Tray they can print from. The boxes are greyed out. They would normally do this by selecting the properties for the printer, within the Print Dialog, from within a application. They would then select the Paper TAB and then would normally select which tray they would like to print from e.g headed paper, but as I say this option is greyed out.
Has anybody come across this before and if so what causes this and what is the fix.
Cheers
Glen

Hey, Bigbitglen
Test this:
In Properties,
Security,
Permissions
Everyone-->>Full Control
Thus, the user when ing personalize their documents would be with their own options!

Hi 25591,
Changed the security permissions for everyone to Full Control but, no change. I also tried to change the security settings to Manage Documentments, but this does not do it either.

I will check the printer shares again soon, just incase it needs time to replicate the changes.

the PC's are running NT4 SP6. No other s/w is being run. They have been setup to only deal with printer spooling. I have tried PCL5e and PCL6 drivers for a LJ2100TN.
On the present servers the drivers are PCL5e and they can access the options with no problems. This problem appears when a new Print Share is created on the new Print server (NT4 w/s).

You repeated Sp6?
The printers, have TCP/IP?
The workstations them you could form with the service Printing TCP/IP Microsoft?
And to form them to the printer directly, like own port.

The printers are using HP Jetdirect cards and is using TCPIP, DLC and IPX protocols. The IP address is fixed, ie. not DHCP. The users are using NT4 w/s with SP4,5 or 6. The print servers are NT4 w/s with SP6 loaded.

If I understand you, you are saying to use LPD. Firstly, we do not wish to increase the protocols used and secondly, why does this only happen with new shares. As stated the present shares work fine.
I have just checked the new Print servers and they are not running Microsoft TCP/IP printing service.

When you installed the new printer to request archives to you: " C:\i386 "
you loaded them!
after that you reviewed SP6?

Users cannot change trays and settings from Workstations prinitng to a NTserver /WS..
the settings are set by the administrator on the server or workstation where the printer is installed.
if you want users to be able to change them on their own install "TCP/IP Printing" on the workstations of the usres.
add LPR ports (capture the remote queues) and install the printers to those Ports.
if you don't know / not sure how to do it replay here and I'll explain step by step.
Hope it helps..
