    Thumbs up

Cool, many folks from Colorado on here. I'm in Colorado Springs, working in Security for a tiny little Mom 'n Pop networking store. So, what's the scoop on LAN games up around here? I've got a couple friends that get together with me every once in a while to blast the bejezus outta each other but I'm wondering if there's something organized around here?

I haven't seen anything... it'd be nice to know if they had any LAN parties regularly or something. From what I've heard, though, FragLAN and all the other biggies tend to just be in places like Florida and California...

Check out www.lanparty.com, you might find that there is a LAN party that happens in your area.

The one that I used to get in my shop all teh time was "those bloody kids stuffed it up again". Now who would you believe, a 40 yr old parent who is paranoid of computers or a teenager who has grown up with them?

Oh and the porn denial thing pops up a bit although I had one customer who actually admitted what was on his HDD and that it was real important to him. Sad individual!

I have one client, that openly admits his activities to me, because he knows lying wont work.

Nice guy and all, but I think he is a little obsessed. His passwords are all derived from parts of the female anatomy, and I think the ratio of porn:work on his laptop, is about 3:1

I, too, have found a whole lot of porn on customers' systems. But the weirdest guy that came in had none. I mean, no porn, no cached porn, no porn sites in the cookies. I mean nothing. It was clear he didn't clean out his cache. He simply didn't have any. Actually, I think he's the only person to date that had none on their computer [that I found.] I agree about the honesty thing. If they just said 'save my porn...'

I think the most disturbing thing I found was on an elderly man's computer. This guy was a real family man. He had the Barbie stuff on the PC for his grandchildren, etc. But, he also had a LOT of very young gay porno in his cache. I cleared his cache and never said a word....

I simply don't think I want to know anymore.

A few thing to keep in mind about "User Intelligence"

    1. What that user does for a living, we are probably just as incapable of doing. I haven't built any Rockets or Jet Fighters, recently.

    2. Needing service doesn't mean the user isn't intelligent. I used to be a Certified Auto Mechanic back in the 70's. Now, I don't even change my own oil. Why? I simply don't WANT to.

There are only two types of users I find annoying. One that lies to me, and one that doesn't have the courtesy to appreciate what you are trying to do for them. Especially when they are rude and unruly.

I agree with the above post except for one point. When you work at a company and your primary job is working on a PC (doing spreadsheets, documents, etc.) I think the using should learn at least the basics. Such as copying files and installing programs.

Anyway my dumb user story is one day a got a call from a user saying there computer was broken and they couldn't see anything on the screen. Asked if the PC was turned on and they said yes. I thought about it for a second and relizing the person wasn't the brightest monkey in the barrel I asked if they had turned the monitor on. "I don't understand" they said. I said have you pressed the round button in the lower right hand corner of the monitor. After a few second pause I heard the sound of the monitor coming to life in the background. "Oh, its working now, thank you very much. I didn't know they could do that". Just just hung up shaking my head.

    Cool

The best one I've ever hear was that the user said that the system just stopped working. I asked the usual questions, did you install anything etc. of course the user said no. I boot the machine with a floppy and take a look at the hard drive and notice that they partitioned a 1.2GB drive 7 times!!!! I don't know how they did it but when we sold it to them it only had 1 partition. You have to love it!!

    Woohoo! Computer Renaissance techs unite!

We may not be much on the latest greatest P-4 systems, but let me tell you I know EVERYTHING about old &^%$#@ Compaq Presarios. (Not that you need to know much beyond that they SUCK).

Fully 3/4 of our service dollars come from user screwup. Unfortunately, 3/4 of the warranty work we do probably comes from the same source. It's just so hard to prove that its their damned fault...

BTW, I've seen more porn in my store than you can shake your stick at. All kinds -- normal, abnormal, legal, illegal, human, nonhuman... on all kinds of customers' machines--old, young, male, female, you name it...
