Post to hell and back (the XPerience)

well, against my better judgement, I went to XP -- after 4 times tryin to install it 5th time was a charm (grr) but she installed and everything was peachie! Ran the updates, everything, its all good.

My personal favorite part my comp is my TV tuner. It proved to be a trip, as with any new os, it wanted to FIGHT big time. Its ok, the good ole boys at hauppauge had it taken care of with GOOD instructions on how to install it with XP...and presto! it worked!!

My audigy (kinda nice to have sound) I knew about bein a @#$%^ so I installed it, rebooted, ran the update, and again, worked!

So I setup good ole winamp, started playin some music....its skipping?! egh, ok, bust out the windows media player, ah its all good. no problem. Turn on the ole tv tuner, I'm back in computer bliss.

after egh, 1/2 hour ...tv tuner isn't working, picture is froze...ok, no problem, close and start it back up, hey that worked....1/2 hour again, locked...grrr reboot. Came back up, opened the tuner, BOOM! blue screen! reboot! hhhmmmmm

At this point I'm goin nuts...I wanna watch the indy time trials, and now I'm missin it, so I'm slighty irritated. Comes back up, its all good, open it up, ah! the time trials. I turn on my AIM and ICQ ...hmm..."check your connection". Check, check, wait, why's my NIC got a big ! on it, OH! the drivers' missing, oooook, reinstall, its all good.

So today, I get home early, power went out so I have to restart my comp, comes back up and says HEY! you don't have a sound card installed. ....ok, FINE lets go. I reinstall the sound card, reboot, TV tuner now doesn't work, reinstall the tuner, reboot, BLUE SCREEN! reboot. AAAGGGGHHHH!!! that does it, -= pulls gun =- yer dead.

And thats all she wrote, when it was rebooting, I stopped it, popped in my ole 2k cd, and I'm back in full force in under 3 hours and everything works (and works correctly).

....I really do not like XP....I really really don't

Sorry to hear about your troubles, however these kinds of things are to be expected with older hardware. TV cards are especially annoying under XP, not sure why. XP is supposed to be video editing friendly

I can ask you why you decided to upgrade from 2K to XP?

My "XPerience" was much smoother: I assembled a new computer from scratch in about 45 minutes, put in the XP Pro CD, booted the install routine from the CD, and then installed XP on it in less time than it took me to put the computer together! It detected everything without even asking me for a driver. Even the old PCI 3c900 NIC which I decided to use was detected.

I had good luck with XP too. I don't like the activation (as I've mentioned before) but aside from that I really like it. No problems with the audigy or a video capture card (ti4600 w/tv in and out).

Only problems I had with XP were with my SB Live Value and my old GeForce 2 GTS. When playing games the system do randomly do a HARD LOCK. Replaced the sound card with one with a CMI8738 chipset (6.1 surround capable) all is now good and haven't looked back. All software and games work without a problem.

    I don't have problems either.

I think the only problem i have had is a sudden restart due to a hardware configuration probably, still trying to figure that one out.

About the only problem I had was a Savage 4 16 meg Vid Card that liked to blue screen. Replaced with ATI Xpert 2000. No probs since. That vid card was flakey under 2000 also, so I'm not blaming 'Uncle Bill'.

I had tried it before and hated it but I'm back on 2k

why 2k? 2k for me at least, runs forever, drivers for it are great (expecially my gigabit card that XP just did NOT like) and I like how I can get my hands on all the networking stuff rather easily.

I too love XP. I did a fresh install on new hardware and then transfered everything. Ran into NO problems. But the only things that were "Old" hardware were:
    1. My Case
    2. 8X DVD-Rom
    3. intel 10/100 pro NIC
    4. SB Live! 5.1

Other then that, I replaced it all and have had no problems. Sure had some compatibiliy issues with some games but they run fine under the Win98 Compatability mode.

Now that I think about it though, I have had one problem. The video card I put in is a Radeon 7500 built by ATI (product number 102 series) with 64MB of Mem. I tried downloading the newest drivers from ATI and it came up during the install saying that "drivers do not match video chipset" and then shuts the setup down. I have contacted ATI on this and the drivers on the CD work just fine. I am currently using the older referrence drivers though just to see if they work and they work fine.

OTHER then that, I love it. Very fast.
If its not broke, then upgrade anyways!

2 pc's running XP on a LAN and no problems here either. Very smooth was the process of installing I say. I did have problems when I first installed it back last October though. Before they supported the Live! cards. Oh that sucked! But it's all better now. I haven't tried installing my TV tuner card yet though. But I probably won't as it's a POC. I'm much happier with my Dazzle digital video creator 80. And yes I can get TV on my PC with it too if it's hooked up to my vcr. I like Win2K, but for my purposes, XP is much better.

    davepoet,

I have had the same problem with Ati Rage Pro cards on W2k. No idea why it does this but when you try to install the drivers it comes up with the same message as you are getting then the install app closes. Very annoying.

I would be interested to hear what Ati say about this if you ever get a response.

Like Fubarian, I was "recommended" to "familiarise" myself with XP by work - Translation - Learn XP our you're fired!

So I installed it, and, like Fubarian again, my damn TV card woudn't work (probably my fault for owning a Voodoo, so I'll let M$ off that one).

The interface makes my teeth itch, not just it's appearence (which I hate), but it seems to get in the way of everything you try to do. Yes, I tried it in 2k mode, but something still... just wasn't right.

Most of the work I do is 2k/NT4 based, so why work made me learn it I'll never know. I also believe it offers very little for a home user who has used 9x/Me in the past, as they end up having to get used to a new interface.

In short, I reached the conclusion that it offered no advantage over 2k, so I went back to the devil I know.
