try to runnning defrag or scandisk in protected mode when there is nothing running at all. use Ctrl-alt-del to close everything down except explorer. Chances are you may have a corrupt tsr or other program that is using to much of your system's resources. If it works fine then you will need to find out which program is causing it. I had a prob. like this when a cust. installed an older version of mcafee over a newer version. He then tried to uninstall the older version but in the process everything went to sh#T!

First, rename the autoexec.bat and config.sys files, so they don't load anything at startup.
Boot to safe mode, completely remove sNort crap.
Restart.

He's got 256 megs of ram and only 75% resources free..
He has a ****load of stuff running, and this happened when norton antivirus decided to auto update the virus definitions.
It still does it when i close all the programs, but works fine in safe mode.

Sound like a driver issue with the IDE ports to me.

Had the same problem (minus the NDD) turned out to be bad RAM. Try pulling RAM and see if that works. I also had to reinstll the OS afterward, something was corrupted.
Good Luck and keep us informed.

Have you tried cleaning the registry? Norton apps love to leave lingering keys...
best of luck

Yep, norton LOVES taking over the system! I would suggest (if possible) to just format and re-install everything. I'm almost possitive it's a software issue.
BTW, sounds like your boss has a nice computer... everyone else have P100's? heh =]
