Post Win 95- Win ME

I'm upgrading a friend's computer from 95- ME
It's an old 233 with 32 M RAM. Anyone know of any problems I might experience?

I don't think you should encounter any problems. I once loaded Win98se on a Pentium 100Mhz with 16MB EDO Ram, took an awfully long time, but I did it. Also make sure you have the right version of WinME to upgrade to, I think there is a certain version for upgrading from Win95 vs upgrading from Win98. Good luck.

If Im not mistaken, Win Me requires 32meg of ram and checks upon install. As long as none of your memory is allowacated(sorry, my spelling stinks)to video I dont see there being a problem. Well other than drivers and such.

Unless you plan on upgrading the RAM to 64 megs or higher, I'd stick with win95...win98 and above will crawl on that config....am upgrading 2 old pentiums to 64 so they can run win98 more reasonably.

Need it for USB...otherwise I would have stuck with OSR2.

This is not an upgrade you are doing--it is a DOWNgrade. You are going to notice a MASSIVE system slowdown unless you increase your RAM.

No flame, telling it like it is. If you want the benefits of WinME you gotta give it the room it needs to play in.

Exactly what I've been trying to tell the masses for years now... I see too, too many systems that have been "upgraded" to Win98/ME with way too little RAM or HD space, I even have a customer with Win98SE on his 486/SX 25 w/only 8MB RAM, I had to temporarily use a DX2/66 and extra RAM just to install the OS, then removed it for him!

But, the customer is always right, until he leaves and then we all have a good laugh

just from our experience WinME has a few neat touches like searching a CD properly, and Lightning fast bootup, and not requiring the CD if you install any hardware. BUT it does use an awful lot of resources that WILL slow down a low Ram Machine. Even we have tested the difference on a 750 Duron with 128MB Ram, testing the difference with Win98SE MinME. The Outcome... Too much difference, we tested out a few games (colin Mcrae 2, UT, Q3) and WinME just slowes the performance down TOO MUCH! I'm Back to Win98 Myself after seeing the difference.

WinME Definately a DownGrade.....

I installed it on a 166 with 64 mb. It was unusable. I took it right off and put 95 on it. It ran fine after that. ME is not for the older PC....

ME ran slow on an AMD 300, so i would not touch it for a 233... my friend wanted it, and he put it on and his system is slow as molasses. He has a 233, At the time with ME came out i had a 300mhz and it was slow on that!
