CD ROM Will Not Play or Recognize Music CDs
I am working on a friend’s computer and after reinstalling sound, display, and other drivers I am unable to get music/audio CDs to play. All other CDs will function in the CD ROM except for music CDs. While looking in Device Manger, I can see an explanation point next to “wave device for voice modem” but my understanding is that this is for Caller ID and voice communication.
The computer is a Gateway 2000 with modem, video, and sound all onboard. “Ensoniq Audio PCI” and “Ensoniq Audio PCI Legacy Device” is shown as the audio controller{s} in Device Manager. I was unable to play CDs with the standard Windows 98 CD Player nor was I able to play CDs after installing the Deluxe CD Player from the Windows 98 Plus Pak. TweakUI is installed and the option to “play music CDs automatically” is selected. The system DOES have sound-it just will not recognize that there is a CD loaded when running the CD player as it continually asks for me to insert a CD.
Your help would be appreciated,
Jeff

As far as I can see, you're trying to play Audio CDs using the Windows Media Player. Have you tried a third-party player, such as WinAmp?
Have you checked the Volume Control and verified that the CD Audio is not set to mute?

AlienDyne is so right, this would be the first thing to check, make sure the cd volome is not muted.

Thanks for the quick response!
Mute is not selected. If I attempt to use the Deluxe CD Player, I am told that there is no media in the CD drive and that I must load a CD.
If I attempt to use the standard Windows CD Player, I receive an error message stating that "the CD drive is in use".
Any more ideas?
Thanks for the help,
Jeff

Is it possible to check the drive on another machine?

Yes, I have three computers in my home network but I believe this to be a software/driver issue. When the Gateway unit was dropped off, my friend mentioned several problems but not being able to play music CDs was not one of them. When I got the unit, the modem, display, and sound drivers were not installed. If I insert a music CD and browse to the CD ROM, I can see the individual tracks on the music CD but cannot play them. I can use the CD ROM to install software and any CD installed other than a music CD will autoplay.
Thanks Again for the time and the help,
Jeff

Well, if you believe the CD-ROM is working properly, do something else. Install Windows over itself. Most of the times, this helps.

Thanks!
I'll try that. I'll upgrade to 98SE and see if that helps.
Thanks for your time,
Jeff
