Post Vinyl and Shellac to CD?

Has anyone had any experience recording records (78s, 45s, LPs) to the hard drive and then burning CDs? I assume that you would need to take the signal from pre-amp out or tape out RCA jacks on a stereo amplifier and feed it into a line-in on a sound card. What is the best software for the conversion to digital files and sound tweaking? Are DBX units helpful? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First of all, you make the connections.
You connect the RCA line-out of the amp to the line-in of your sound card.
Then you need to set the correct volume level, to mute everything else (like aux, mic etc.) to avoid extra noise.
If you own Sound Blaster Live or a similar sound card that can process real time effects, don't forget to set everything off.

    About the software.
Any kind of sound recording software can do that. If you own a Sound Blaster sound card, you can use Wave Studio.
I personally find WaveForce and WaveLab very good ones.

To reduce the noise (especially when you record from a tape) you can use Spin Doctor. You can find it together with Adaptec Easy CD Creator.

One last thing. Remember to set the recording to PCM, 16Bit, Stereo, 44.100Hz to get the best quality.

Hope these helped you a bit.

    Good luck...

Thanks, Aliendyne. Excellent advice as always.

I still have a few more questions for you or anyone else who stumbles across this topic:

Is there software to record files in the CDA format so that they can be played on a normal CD player? Or is there software to covert WAV files? What loss of sound quality is there?

    Thumbs up

    Don't mention it!

Actually, you don't need such software, since every kind of CD-Recording software can do that when you choose Audio CD burning.
Just run the CD-Recording software and choose "Audio CD". Add the WAVs you want and press "Finish". That's it. You don't need anything else.

To get the best possible quality you have to set the correct recording settings, before recording anything. These are: 16Bit, Stereo, 44.100Hz. Do that before the recording procedure and don't worry about anything.

Some people convert their music from CDA or WAV to MP3 and store it to their HDDs or CDs.
You can burn about 150-200 songs in a single 74mins CD, if you convert them to MP3.
Be careful though. MP3's quality is lower than WAV's.

    Good luck Houseisland.
    Hope these helped you..
