[RESOLVED] Bios size recognition of Hard Drive

I have a WindowsNT4 File Server with a 440BX
Motherboard and a 10 GB Hard Drive. The Bios
largest partition allowed ( apparently) is
8 GB. I'm going to upgrade the OS to Windows 2000
Server and would like to add bigger hard drive(s).
Can I flash the BIOS to improve the max. single
letter Hard Drive siae ? Also the WINNT4 only
allows 2.1GB Partions (NTFS).

Most likely there would be an updated BIOS available, check the m/board manufacturer's website. That might be a good idea anyway for 2000 compatability, as well as for breaking an 8.4G barrier. However if you have less than Service Pack 4 installed, NT4 doesn't see over 8.4G, so if this is the case it mightn't be a BIOS issue.

The 2.1G thing might be a BIOS issue too, or because the partition is converted from FAT16 during installation. The Text Mode NT4 Setup is limited to 4G partition, but under the GUI you should be able to partition any size or adjust with Disk Administrator.

In short, all these problems may go away when you upgrade to Win2000, but if you're going to update the BIOS anyway, do it before going to 2000.
