I treally depends on what OS you like. Every windows has options to let it run on laptops optimally (Is that a word??). Currently I am running WinME on my Compaq 780 with no problems.

I personally prefer W2K. Haven't had problems yet with several different laptops as long as you have latest bios & drivers from manufacturer!

I'm running 2k right now, but with the 128 megs of ram, it baugs like heck...main reason why I'm asking...however I am thinking of going to 256 from Crucial for 120 bucks (2 x 128s)...but I'm open to suggestions of course

I've had very good success with W2K, as long as the laptop hardware will support it. It has better power configuration than 9x, and can be secured to a much greater extent.

Even on a P-133 with 32MB Ram I liked Win2k the best. Slow as hell, but stable as can be (without learning Linux)

2000 if you can deal with the speed.
I have a Compaq Armada7400
PII 300
128mb ram
and it is running ME just fine.
Otherwise I would revert to 98.

I got an Inspiron 8000 about 3 weeks ago. It also came with ME. I formatted the first day and installed 98se. That lasted for 3 days when I installed 2000.
Win2000 runs much better, but a little slow unless you set the services that you dont need to manual instead of automatic. I also recommend Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel. It helps keep stuff from running at start without deleting registry keys.
Inspiron 8000
850 PIII
128 Mb (wish I got more)
20 GB
DVD
8X CDRW
UXGA Display
D-Link wireless network
Indeterminism. There's nothing you can do about it.

I don't think the speed's so bad compared to Win98. Once you get past boot, that is. I'll grant that booting is a good time for a coffe break with W2K. But when I've put 98 and W2k on identical boxes, W2K is actually faster for some apps.
