Unhappy new computer freezes all the time

hi i just got a new amd athlon tbird 1.2ghz 320mb ram with 64mb shared video ram and installed win98se on the clean hd along with the cd of drivers that came with the computer. the system seems to run great except that it hangs up all the time, somewhat randomly. when this happens the mouse freezes and the only thing i can do is press the reset button. it hangs up the most when on the web, but not always, sometimes when installing or playing games, or even just when scrolling.
i was thinking maybe it was overheating.. but the fan is working fine and why would they put the wrong kind of fan in a new system. i dont know what the normal temps are for this kind of system though..
could someone please help ?!?!? i tried wiping the hard drive and reinstalling everything but the same thing happens.

OK Casey, lets start with the obvious:

Have you downloaded the latest 4 in 1 drivers?

Have you flashed your bios to the latest, greatest version?

Have you updated all of your hardware drivers to the latest, greatest version?

Do you know the temp of your cpu under load?

Is your ram generic or name brand?

Is your power supply AMD certified? How big is it?

Is your case adequately ventilated - at least an intake and exhaust fan to complement the cpu fan?

Let us know and we will try to help! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

well i tried downloading the latest drivers for my M810LMR MB off of www.pcchips.com.tw, but when i run the program aminf326 it says error 2 file does not exist.
i also downloaded the right .rom file but i dont know how to make the first program see the second file.

Try specifing the .rom file at the command line. Like
    C:>Aminf326 010425s.rom <ENTER>

Might also check CMOS to see if processor is identified correctly. ie correct clock speed and FSB speed.

    Just a thought

Twisted is got the questions for you, now let me provide you with some resources Here are some websites that have some helpful programs and or drivers:
    <a href="http://mbm.livewiredev.com/" target="_blank">Motherboard Monitor</a>
    <a href="http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/Cosm/" target="_blank">Folding@Home</a>
    <a href="http://www.mersenne.org/" target="_blank">Prime95</a>
    <a href="http://www.viahardware.com/download/index.shtm#4in1" target="_blank">Via 4-in-1 Drivers</a>

Quick explanation: Motherboard monitor is a program that can monitor the temperatures of your system; Folding@Home is a program that can load your system to 100% so that you can determine stability and if heat is the cause; Prime95 is another program to tax your system to 100% for temps; Via 4-in-1 is self expanatory

Ripped STRAIGHT from AMD's site to avoid confusion/rumor. This is truth as told by AMD. Ref: <a href="http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athlon/techdocs/pdf/23794.pdf" target="_blank">http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athlon/techdocs/pdf/23794.pdf</a>

Max Temps for the TBird Socket Design:
    Maximum die temperature
    *90ºC for under 1100 MHz
*95ºC for 1100 MHz and higher

REGARDLESS, I know this much. My TBird hits temps as high as 54ºC. I've seen them go as high as 70ºC and still be responsive.

As for the lockups, try removing all your cards but the video card and test stability. If this works then through process of elimination add one card at a time till you get a problem. Deal with that card. AND OR I really REALLY suggest running something like Prime95 or Folding@Home to stress the HELL out of your proc. Have Motherboard Monitor up and running and monitor your temps. Find your avg. idle and load temps. Once you know this, you can answer a lot of questions about AMD Temps and you know what is acceptable for your system.

    Hope this helps,

id buy a cpu shim, maybe your crushing the core.

    Or maybe bad memory

Do you leak any fluids, do you have any bumps on your rear, do you have any unpleasant odors?
If you answered yes to any of these then you are not qualified to own a new AMD ATHLON XP.
If someone ask you if you are running the all-new fastest AMD ATHLON XP, just turn around and reply "WHY YES, AND ITS CERTIFIED"
