Resolved [RESOLVED] Windows 2000 hangs randomly

I have a dual boot Windows 2000/Windows 98 SE system and when I'm running Windows 2000, it has been hanging lately. It happens at random places.......during the screensaver, while watching a dvd or tv, or for no particular reason at all. It happens within 5 minutes of start up or after an hour, so it's impossible to recreate. Whenever I restart after using the reset button (the only way it will let me restart when this problem occurs) my active desktop is turned off and it has that white screen with the big light blue writing and exclamation mark. I had a similar problem with Windows ME which is why I got rid of it (not to mention the fact that it's slower than 98 SE). I never had this problem with Windows 2000 until a few days ago. The Windows ME problem was because of a problem with my CPU temperature, which has since been fixed. This new problem is not a temperature problem. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

I'm running a DFI AK-74 EC with a Duron 650. I'm running 256 MB of RAM. 2 128 sticks. One is PC 100 and the other is PC 133 but the BIOS is set to PC 100. As far as Windows 98 SE working okay, I don't have the same problems in it. But sometimes it won't boot up. I go into 98 safe mode and run Norton Utilities and a search for Dos Boot error message comes up. It does a scan and then corrects it somehow where 98 will boot up again. This problems happens quite often also. I had planned to write another post about it but if someone can figure it out here that would be cool.

To be more specific about the 98 SE problem, Norton Utilities says that there is an error in the extended boot partition. Would you like to fix this error? I choose yes and it does some sort of scan and it fixes the problem so that 98 SE starts up normally. But then the next time I try to boot up SE, it doesn't load and I've gotta repeat the safe mode step. I don't use 98 for much, so it's basically a nuisance to have to do this every time I do use it but not a terrible problem.

I turned off Active Desktop and there aren't any hang ups now. But I would like to run Active Desktop. Is this any clue as to what might be wrong? I'm considering installing over my current installation but if there is a simple fix, I would like to try it first. Thanks.

sounds like a stick of memory try pulling the 133mhz and see what happens or pull the 100mhz and set the board to the right settings and try it i have in some cases found mixing memory causes problems try one way if no change then try other way

I ran into the same problem with Win2k on my Athlon Tbird 850/Asus A7V combo. It turned out to be a bad BIOS version, and I actually had to DOWNGRADE my BIOS to an earlier version. Of course, you have a different board so this may not be your problem, but I would suggest updating your BIOS and getting new 4-in-1 drivers from the AMD website. Good luck!
