Post Win 2k stuck in default settings

OH boy 4 installs later and Win 2k has been shelved
I installed it numerouse ways and I get it running Ok but when I go to apply any settings or install any device drivers it goes back to the default settings after a reboot
It seems as though it can't write changes to the registery so it goes back to the default settings
I selected " standard PC " in the device manager and after a reboot it redetected all my devices with incomplete dialouge boxes
    then asked for a reboot
After the reboot it wen't through the exact same thing and it repeated this after another reboot
On the earlier install I changed my video card since my TNT was goofing off and Win 2k could not even manage to install the drivers for the new voodoo 3000 and it has drivers for it and I have the Win 2k drivers for it
I had it running on my AMD system with a P5-A Asus board
But I have the Intel Celeron 533 Gigabyte GA-6vx7+
Quantum 20 gig drive ata 66
Acer cd rom drive ata 33
    128 megs sdram 133mhz Micron
    Voodoo 3 3000 agp 16 meg vid.
    Raltek NIC
    Creative ensoniq audio PCI
I have all the fans I need
I have typed the sys c: and cleaned out my drive, I even zero wiped it and reinstalled Win 98 , I find Win 98 runs great but Win 2 k just will not run properly
Any ideas or do I buy another PC for Win 2k , I may experiment with my spare PC based on the Intel 233 mmx socket 7 cpu

    you could try clean install
    when machine starts installing
remember the part press f6 for third party scsi devices?
press f5,f4,f3,or ,f7 while that message is displaying (dont remember which). it will then prompt you with some options, including standard PC.
select that, and then your good to go (for that part)
if this works - hey - thats all good, if not - post another...

    Cool

Well I am happy to say I have Win 2k installed successfully on my spare computer and I am going to try your suggestion on my main computer
I looked in the device manager on the spare computer and it says " Standard PC "
On my main computer it was saying soemthing diferently so I think the standard PC will get Win 2k working for me on my main computer
I will let ya know how it goes :>)

Make sure that your BIOS is updated to the relevant Win2k compliant revision. I don't know wether or not it may need it doing but a lot of problems can be solved by doing this.

Thanks Darren but I have the latest bios from Gigabyte and the system that runs Win 2k has a bios from 1998 and it has a Biostar AT mother board
I may have to get an Asus board or just forget about Win 2k since I only have and Intel based system
I wonder if it is thr ata 66 or maybe Win 2k does not support my 20 gig drive, I need help here :>(
