Post DMA problems with DVD Rom

    Hi,

I've recently done a reinstall of Win98 SE and am now having problems with my Toshiba DVD (16*/40*) (model SD M1502) and DMA settings.

In order to watch a DVD movie, DMA needs to be enabled to get smooth playback. However, if I use the drive as a CD Rom,to install application for instance, without disabling the DMA in device manager my computer locks up and I occasionally get the 'blue screen of death.' However, if I disable the DMA and reboot everything is ok when I use the DVD as a CD ROM, save the fact that DVDs don't play smoothly, unless I enable DMA, reboot... and so on.

The problem started after I formatted and reinstalled Windows98, which I've no done twice but the problem persists. As a result, I doubt the problem I have is a hardware issue.

I'm running a BCM board (BC 133KT-100) with a VIA chipset (I've updated the bus master controller to version 1.32 which I believe is the most recent, or close to it), Athlon 850, 256 pc133, Mat****a CDRW 7585 (on secondary IDE as slave), Toshiba DVD (on secondary IDE as master) and my hard drive is on the primary IDE as master. I've doulble checked all the jumper settings on the drives.

I've also tried setting up the DVD on the primary IDE as a slave and the CDRW on the sec IDE as master to see if that would fix my problem, but alas to no avail.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this very annoying problem?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Go to the control pnel, then system and check the device manager. Are there any conflicts? (yellow dot with an exclamation point)

Device manager does not indicate that there are any conflicts. Thanks for the suggestion though.

The problem is a bizarre one and has me completely baffled!

    Question

Mate don't worry.Had the same problem but with burning CD's.Tried to run the firmware update on my PC at home to find it would hang my machine and needed a cold reboot. So I take it to work and it works first time..The techie at Ricoh told me that it the drive(9120a CD-Writer-DVD)may have problems with DMA so I changed it to PIO and it worked fine.THe problem was that now I burnt a CD,tried to read the CD to be told incorrect function, change back to DMA,reboot, now I can read the CD,strange or what?Ran the firmware as advised, didn't work, updated the VIA 4in 1 drvers, didn't solve it...So I am returning the drive and getting a dedicated CD-writer and a seperate DVD drive, too much hassles for nothing...Good luck.

Did you try to download the Digital Video update?

Video Capture Update for DirectX 8.0 (formerly known as Digital Video Update for DirectX 8.0)
If you use a video capture device, you may need to install the Video Capture Update for DirectX 8.0. Affected video capture devices include:

TV tuner and video capture cards/peripherals (AGP, PCI, USB, or IEEE 1394), such as ATI All-In-Wonder, VIVO, or TV Tuner cards.
Digital Video (DV) devices connected to OHCI-compliant IEEE 1394 ports, also called FireWire or i-link.
