Cool Netgear MR314 Wireless Network + DSL Sharing

I'm in the process of setting up a Wireless Network to share a DSL connection, and share files and a printer between a XP Prof. PC and a laptop for a business.

I am using a Netgear MR314 Router, a Netgear MA401 PCMCIA wireless card in the laptop, and Netgear MA301 PCI Card (with a MA401 PCMCIA wireless card inside it)in the desktop. I've installed both cards, the drivers and software, and set up the Router. The Nic cards show up as working properly in the Device Manager and The Netgear Configuration Utility shows a connection on both PC's.

Verizon DSL (uses PPoE) was set up previously on the desktop with a wired nic card and is still working fine. I now have the DSL modem plugged into the MR314 Router (Internet jack) and I have duplicated all the settings of the old connection, but the Wireless connection doesn't connect to the Internet. I keep getting the following error from both PC's: "Connection Failed: Error 678 Remote Computer Did Not Respond." This also happens when I plug the Cat-5 cable supplied with the Router into the wired nic card. Same Error. What am I doing wrong?!

Also, I haven't been able to share files and the printer yet either. But I think I know the problem. I haven't set up passwords for the users of the desktop and laptop yet (I will with the same users and passwords on both). And I don't remember disabling the force guest problem with XP yet. Maybe that's not all though?!

Both PC's are running Windows XP Professional. The desktop is using NTFS and the laptop FAT 32. Both PC's have a unique name and the same Workgroup name. Simple File and Print Sharing is turned off. The XP Internet Connection Firewall is turned off. Norton Personal Firewall is running on both PC's and the nics are set up as trusted. Internet Connection Sharing is on. TCP/IP, File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks, QoS Packet Scheduler, and Client for Microsoft Networks are installed.

I've set up sharing for the Desktop C Drive and Printer and the Laptop C Drive with their own share names and granted access to Everyone (temporarily) and all Administrators. But in Network places I can only see the shared items from the PC I'm on and not the other PC.

The TCP/IP settings are: Obtain an IP address automatically. Obtain DNS Server automatically. Use default gateway on remote network. The PPoE settings are Enable LCP extensions. Negotiate multi-link for single link connections.

The IP address that is being assigned to the Router is 192.168.0.1, the Desktop is 192.168.0.2, and the laptop is 192.168.0.3, Norton Personal Firewall lists the nic cards as 192.168.0.0, and the Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0

I can ping the router from either PC, and sometimes depending on what settings I'm playing with ping the desktop and laptop back and forth (but not presently).

I feel like I'm close but oh so far away! What do I need to do to finish my quest for DSL and file and printer sharing?! I don't have access to the network until Monday but I'll try to answer questions as best as I can remember. Any help would be greatly appreciated! THANKS!!!

I found this in the Verizon faq session on DSL reports.com. Could someone help the newbie and go through this step by step explaining exactly what I'm doing? If you could do screen shots it would be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!!!

Am I going to run the setup program for the router through my web browser by typing in 192.168.0.1?

Q: How do I setup my NetGear router with Verizon? (#1373)
    A: BA
    (PPPoE)
Telnet to router (What is Telnet?)

    setup menu 1
with any system name, or blank
domain name has to be your ISP i.e. "bellatlantic.com", "verizon.net",
    enter thru and save,

    go to menu 2,
use space bar to toggle to ip address attached on LAN,
type ip address of your pc i.e. "192.168.0.2",
    enter thru and save.

    Go to menu 4,
    set Encapsulation to PPPoE,
set login, which could be either "username" or "username@domainname", and password,
leave everything as default, dynamic ip address, sua to yes.
Enter thru and do a test, you should get IPCP opened for last command.

    Go to menu 24.1,
check for WAN IP address, if it is showing,
    then you can open browser.

    Cool

I turned off ICS and created passwords for all XP users and then File and Print sharing worked fine. Somehow the XP firewall got turned on again on one PC and had to be put out of my misery. And I managed to get the DSL sharing going too. All my settings we're correct ... the user had the wrong DSL username and password ... Doh!

I could use some help with security though. I have the SSID password changed on the router and on both PC's and everything works fine. But when I enable WEP 64 or 128 bit security on both PC's nothing works. That's too much security. I need access to the network. What am I doing wrong? Is there a setting that needs to be changed on the router?

It's getting pretty lonely here. Any help would be appreciated greatly. Thanks!

    ok here it goes:

when u set the WEP(Wired Equivalent Privacy)64 or 128 on the router by way of a secret passphrase then u maust also set the secret passphrase on all of ur 802.11b equipped comps... What the WEP does is it encodes ur data so that it can't be intercepted when transmitted much like the CAT or Fiber "wires"...CAT 5 can be spliced though...but thats for a whole different post

Also keep in mind that the higher the encryption the slower ur network will be

    Thumbs up

    Thanks bbtech for the reply!

A few quick questions. What is the advantage of using the passphrase as opposed to manually adding the 64 or 128 bit encryptions numbers and letters? Is the passphrase also limited to 0-9 and a-f too? And how much does 64 bit and 128 bit encryption slow down the network? I assume that the file and print sharing will be much more noticable than with the dsl sharing. Thanks again!
